The club announced the new ownership group on 8 May 2025; the word “passionate” in the headline is a description, not a quotation from Beckham.
What Beckham said about Salford City
In a message quoted by BBC Sport, Beckham wrote: “I’m so proud to be part of a new ownership group alongside my mate [Gary Neville] as we begin the next chapter of Salford’s journey.” BBC Sport reported the Instagram message on the day of the announcement.
The club’s announcement included a fuller statement explaining Beckham’s personal connection: “I grew up in Salford….I have such fond memories of my time living there and the place and its people played such an important part in my early life in football. Salford City is at the heart of its community….it has a rich history and I am delighted to be a part of the next chapter.” The ellipses appear in the club-published text. Salford City’s 8 May 2025 announcement also set out the new group and its stated commitments.
Who joined the ownership group?
Salford described the incoming structure as a group of nine shareholders led by Beckham and Neville. The club said the deal bought out the remaining Class of ’92 shareholders. Its announcement named Declan Kelly and Lord Mervyn Davies, Dream Sports Group, Colin Ryan, Frank Ryan, Nick Woodhouse and Shravin Mittal alongside Beckham and Neville. Kelly and Davies were to serve as co-chairs of the board.

The club said the shareholders had committed to significant investment in the club, team and facilities. That is an announced commitment, not evidence of how much was ultimately spent or what results followed.
What changed for the Class of ’92 shareholders?
Nicky Butt, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Phil Neville ceased to be shareholders under the new arrangement. Salford said they would continue contributing in roles across technical, football, commercial, recruitment and the club’s foundation. The announcement therefore changed the ownership structure without describing those four as leaving all involvement with the club. What were the stated plans?
Gary Neville said football would come first and that the club needed to move toward sustainability over the next four to five years. He also described planned investment in the club, team, stadium and training ground, alongside efforts to grow revenue, look after supporters and keep the club accessible. Those are Neville’s stated aims and plans, not proof that sustainability or the investments had been achieved. Neville’s LinkedIn post set out his account of the priorities.
How the announcement fits Salford’s rise
The Class of ’92 became involved in 2014. Salford won four promotions in five seasons and reached the English Football League in 2019, according to BBC Sport’s account. The club remained in League Two after promotion; in 2024–25 it finished eighth, outside the playoff places, BBC reported. These milestones provide context for the “next chapter” language, but they do not by themselves establish the effect of the ownership change.

Later ownership update: AIG
The May 2025 announcement is not the final ownership update available. On 18 December 2025, Salford announced that AIG had become its largest shareholder and long-term strategic partner under a commercial agreement running through the 2029–30 season. The club described planned work in football operations, infrastructure, commercial growth and community initiatives. Its release does not state AIG’s percentage stake or establish that every plan had been completed. The December 2025 announcement provides those details.
