Renukanth Subramaniam, described in 2010 reports as an operator of the online criminal forum DarkMarket, had pleaded guilty to conspiracy to defraud and five counts of furnishing false information. The headline’s “10 years” referred to the reported maximum prison term for conspiracy to defraud—not a sentence he had received. At the time of publication, Subramaniam and fellow defendant John McHugh were still awaiting sentencing.

Who was the man in the headline?

The IT Pro archive dated the report January 14, 2010. Contemporaneous accounts identified the defendant as Renukanth Subramaniam and described him as a person who helped run DarkMarket; The Register described him as having helped found it. The reports concerned his criminal case, not a sentence already imposed.

What was DarkMarket?

DarkMarket was a secretive online forum where criminals exchanged stolen payment-card details and other personal information. The Independent reported that an undercover FBI officer infiltrated the site and that it was subsequently shut down. The paper described a third-party payment system that facilitated exchanges between sellers and buyers; Judge John Hillen characterized it as “PayPal for criminals.”

How the forum operated

The Register reported that the forum operated for three years and had about 2,500 members at its peak. It also reported that applicants were asked to submit details of 100 compromised cards for reviewers to verify. These are figures from The Register’s contemporaneous account, not independently audited totals.

What did Subramaniam and McHugh plead guilty to?

Defendant Pleas reported in 2010
Renukanth Subramaniam Conspiracy to defraud and five counts of furnishing false information, according to The Independent.
John McHugh Conspiracy to defraud, according to The Independent; he was identified as a DarkMarket reviewer.

Did Subramaniam actually receive a 10-year sentence?

The available contemporaneous reports do not establish the eventual sentences. At the time of publication, Subramaniam and McHugh were awaiting sentencing. The Independent said conspiracy to defraud carried a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison. That was the reported maximum for that offense, not a term the court had already imposed on Subramaniam or McHugh.
