Danone reported that methane emissions in its dairy supply chain were 29.8% below its 2020 baseline in 2025, putting the company close to its 2030 target of an absolute 30% reduction in methane from fresh milk used in its dairy products. The result is not solely a measure of farm improvements: Danone attributes 17.6 percentage points of the decline to procurement decisions, mainly sourcing volumes and product mix, 11.2 points to farm performance management, and 1.0 point to other factors, mainly scope and methodology changes.
What is Danone’s methane-reduction target?
Danone’s target is to reduce methane emissions from fresh milk used in its dairy products by 30% by 2030, measured against a 2020 baseline. It is an absolute reduction target: it concerns the total emissions within the defined boundary, rather than emissions per unit of milk or product. Danone announced the target in 2023 and restated it in its July 2026 progress disclosure.
The boundary matters. Danone’s 2025 action plan says fresh milk accounts for roughly 70% of the company’s methane emissions; the remaining 30% is linked to indirect dairy ingredients purchased from suppliers. The fresh-milk target should not be read as covering all methane associated with those separately purchased dairy ingredients.
How much has Danone cut methane emissions so far?
In its July 2026 disclosure, Danone reported 106,288 tonnes of methane (CH4) in 2025, equivalent to 2,869,771 tonnes of CO2e using the 100-year global warming potential (GWP100) based on IPCC AR6. Danone said this was 29.8% below its 2020 baseline and 6.0% below 2024. These are company-reported inventory figures, not an independent assessment of the causes of the change.

The 29.8% result is close to the 30% target, but it does not by itself show that farms reduced methane by that amount through improved practices. Danone’s own breakdown separates the contribution of procurement decisions from its farm-management contribution.
What drove the reported reduction?
Danone attributes the reduction against baseline through 2025 to three categories:
Rank #2
- One half gallon of Whole Milk
- Grade A, homogenized, pasteurized
- Made with milk from cows not treated with rBST
- Contains Vitamin D

| Attributed factor | Contribution to reported reduction | What Danone says it reflects |
|---|---|---|
| Procurement decisions | 17.6 percentage points | Mainly sourcing volumes and product mix |
| Farm performance management | 11.2 percentage points | Management-related changes across the farm supply base |
| Other factors | 1.0 percentage point | Mainly changes in scope and methodology |
The procurement contribution is larger than the farm-performance contribution in Danone’s accounting. Changes in how much fresh milk it sources, and the mix of products or sources in that supply, materially affect the total inventory. As a result, the reported 29.8% decrease should not be described as a 29.8% reduction caused by on-farm interventions.
Within its 11.2-point farm-performance category, Danone assigns 5.9 points to herd management, 3.6 to manure management, 1.2 to farm portfolio mix, and 0.5 to feed additives. These are components of the company’s attribution for the reported change, not universal estimates of how much each practice will cut emissions on any farm.

What actions and programs does Danone report?
Farm practices and supplier programs
Danone names herd and manure management, feed additives, animal monitoring, supplier engagement, and farmer training among its actions or programs. Its July 2026 disclosure also reports that more than 1,000 farmers in Morocco and India had received biodigesters through a partnership with Sistema.bio. Danone planned a further 1,500 deployments during 2026 and described a pilot in Egypt. The deployment figures describe program reach; they do not establish a quantified methane reduction from those biodigesters.
In Poland, Danone described a partnership with MSD Animal Health to use SenseHub monitoring on supplier farms, with results expected by the end of 2026. In North America, it reported a five-year pilot with Ahold Delhaize USA and The Nature Conservancy supporting practices such as manure separation, compost turners, manure spreaders, and irrigation-efficiency tools.

Brazil’s Jornada Flora program
Danone reported that 151 farms were participating in its Brazil Jornada Flora program as of 2025. The company says that, since the program began in 2021, participating farms achieved 47% lower CO2 emissions and 42% lower methane emissions, alongside 37% higher farmer income. These are outcomes reported by Danone; the disclosure should not be treated as independent verification of the results.
Dairy ingredients and wastewater projects
Danone’s 2025 action plan describes dairy-ingredient decarbonization partnerships with FrieslandCampina and Leprino. It also describes a Leprino-linked BioFiltro wastewater project at two California farms and says the technology may reduce methane from manure storage. That is a company-reported project claim, not independently verified performance data.

How much supplier progress is independently verified?
At the end of 2025, Danone said 83% of its dairy ingredient suppliers by volume were members of the Sustainable Dairy Partnership. It reported that 30% had completed external verification of their sustainability program under stage 3 of that framework. These figures concern dairy ingredient suppliers and framework participation; they should not be conflated with verification of the full fresh-milk methane target or its reported emissions reduction.
How does the target fit Danone’s broader climate plan?
Danone presents the methane commitment as part of its wider 2030 science-based climate targets and its work on Scope 3 and forest, land, and agriculture (FLAG) emissions. That is the company’s framing of its climate program; the framing does not independently validate progress. Danone’s July 2026 disclosure is the latest cited progress report here and covers results through calendar year 2025.
