Dana White joined Meta’s board of directors effective December 30, 2024, according to the company’s 2025 proxy statement. Meta announced his election on January 6, 2025, alongside the appointments of Exor CEO John Elkann and technology investor Charlie Songhurst. Meta said the new directors would bring expertise relevant to AI, wearables and human connection; it also cited White’s experience building UFC into a global sports, media and entertainment business.
When did Dana White join Meta’s board?
There are two dates to distinguish. Meta’s 2025 proxy statement says White’s election took effect on December 30, 2024. The company made the appointment public on January 6, 2025, announcing White together with John Elkann and Charlie Songhurst. The election date is the formal effective date given in the proxy; January 6 is the announcement date. Meta’s announcement and its SEC-filed exhibit report the public announcement, while the 2025 proxy statement gives the effective date.
Why did Meta appoint Dana White?
Meta’s stated rationale was that the three new directors would add expertise and perspective for the company’s work on AI, wearables and the future of human connection. In the announcement, Meta Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg said: “Dana, John and Charlie will add a depth of expertise and perspective that will help us tackle the massive opportunities ahead with AI, wearables and the future of human connection.”
Meta’s proxy describes White’s board-relevant experience as leading UFC and scaling a global sports, media and entertainment business, including digital content distribution and brand-building. That framing connects his background in sports and media to the company’s stated interest in content, technology and consumer connection; it does not establish the extent of his influence over any specific board decision.

What did White say about joining?
In Meta’s January 2025 announcement, White, identified as UFC President and CEO, said: “I’ve never been interested in joining a board of directors until I got the offer to join Meta’s board. I am a huge believer that social media and AI are the future. I am very excited to join this incredible team and to learn more about this business from the inside. There is nothing I love more than building brands, and I look forward to helping take Meta to the next level.” These remarks describe White’s stated interest and enthusiasm, rather than an independent evaluation of the appointment.
Is White still on Meta’s board?
Yes. Meta’s board of directors listing says White has served as a director since December 2024. The company’s 2026 proxy statement lists him as an independent director, confirming that the appointment became an ongoing board role rather than remaining a pending announcement.

How does UFC’s Threads presence relate to the appointment?
In April 2025, The Associated Press reported that Threads would feature exclusive original UFC content. That is later business context linking UFC and a Meta platform, but it is separate from Meta’s publicly stated explanation for White’s board appointment. The announcement and proxy do not establish that this content arrangement was the reason for his election.
