CVC Capital Partners Asia Fund IV agreed to acquire OANDA on May 2, 2018, and the transaction closed on October 15, 2018. The deal transferred ownership of OANDA Global Corporation to a CVC-controlled holding structure. CVC no longer owns OANDA: FTMO Group completed its acquisition on December 1, 2025.
What CVC acquired
The transaction covered all outstanding equity of OANDA Global Corporation, according to CVC’s announcement. The buyer was CVC Capital Partners Asia Fund IV, acting through a holding entity or wholly owned subsidiary rather than through an entity formally named simply “CVC Asia Fund.”
OANDA’s 2023 U.S. financial statement later identified OANDA Global Corporation as wholly owned by CVC Capital Partners Asia Pacific IV LP, a Jersey-domiciled private-equity fund managed by CVC Capital Partners SICAV-FIS S.A. (OANDA 2023 financial statement).
At the time, OANDA offered online trading in currencies, equity indices, commodities, treasuries and precious metals. Its online foreign-exchange platform was known as fxTrade. The business also provided currency data, analytics and services for corporate customers.

Deal timeline
| Date | Event |
|---|---|
| May 2, 2018 | CVC announced that a wholly owned subsidiary of CVC Capital Partners Asia Fund IV had agreed to acquire OANDA’s outstanding equity. |
| October 15, 2018 | The acquisition closed after the required regulatory approvals. Moelis recorded the transaction as “Closed – 10/15/2018” (Moelis transaction record). |
| October 15, 2018 | A CFTC order identified a $37.5 million dividend payment to OANDA shareholders related to the acquisition. |
| December 1, 2025 | FTMO Group completed its acquisition of OANDA. |
Therefore, saying that CVC “acquired OANDA in May 2018” is imprecise. May was the announcement date; October 15 was the closing date.
How much did CVC pay?
The official CVC announcement did not disclose a purchase price. Moelis’s transaction record also lists the value as undisclosed.
A contemporaneous Finance Magnates report, citing a source involved in the transaction, said CVC paid $160 million for a 98.5% stake, implying an overall valuation of approximately $175 million. Those figures are reported by Finance Magnates, but should not be treated as confirmed official deal terms.
There is also a difference between the reported stake and the formal transaction description. CVC described the offer as an acquisition of all outstanding equity, while the media report referred to a 98.5% stake and a 1.5% management profit interest. Those descriptions should be kept separate rather than presented as identical.

The advisers were:
- OANDA: Moelis & Company UK LLP and Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP.
- CVC: FT Partners, White & Case LLP and McCarthy Tetrault LLP.
OANDA’s expansion under CVC
OANDA said its acquisition of GFM Solutions Group in 2018 was its first acquisition after the CVC transaction. GFM supplied corporate currency-risk-management and financial-reporting software, extending OANDA beyond its retail trading operations.
OANDA later added businesses including Polish broker Dom Maklerski TMS Brokers and UK crypto platform Coinpass. OANDA’s current materials refer to the resulting operations as OANDA TMS Brokers and OANDA Coinpass.
In announcing the later sale to FTMO, CVC said that OANDA had added products internationally, built a dedicated technology back end in Poland and developed a scalable, mobile-first trading platform during CVC’s ownership.

FTMO is headquartered in the Czech Republic and provides trading education and training services. Its transaction announcement said OANDA would remain a fully standalone business.

What the ownership change means for customers
A change in the ultimate owner does not automatically mean that a customer’s trading account, regulator, or legal counterparty has changed. OANDA operates through separate entities in different jurisdictions, and the relevant entity depends on where the customer lives and which service is being used.
