Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallThe defining difference is who controls the private keys. A custodial crypto app or exchange holds the keys for a hosted account and gives you access through its login system. A self-custody wallet puts the keys—and the recovery responsibility—in your hands.
That distinction affects recovery, transaction approval, security duties, supported assets, and what happens when access is lost. The company name on an app is not enough to identify the model: one provider can offer both a custodial exchange and a separate self-custody wallet.

What “custody” means in a crypto app
Private keys are the credentials that authorize blockchain transactions. Whoever controls the relevant key can approve a transfer. “Custody” describes who holds and controls those keys, not whether an app has a familiar brand, a mobile interface, or a trading screen.
In a custodial arrangement, the service maintains the keys for assets credited to your hosted account. You authenticate to the service, and the service processes transactions according to its systems, controls, and policies. In self-custody, the wallet gives you control of the keys, usually through a recovery phrase or another wallet-specific recovery method. You authorize transactions directly from the wallet.

Neither model is automatically safer for every person. Custody can reduce the chance that an individual loses a recovery phrase, but it creates dependence on a provider’s security, solvency, policies, and availability. Self-custody removes that custodial dependency while making you responsible for key protection, backups, and every transaction approval.
How a custodial app or exchange works
The provider holds the hosted-wallet keys
When an exchange describes an account as custodial, the exchange maintains the private keys associated with the assets held in that account. Your account balance is displayed in the service’s ledger, and your access is mediated by the service rather than by a recovery phrase that the exchange gives you.
You sign in instead of signing transactions with your own key
Typical activity—buying, selling, converting, or withdrawing—starts after you sign in and pass the platform’s security checks. The service handles the key-management and transaction process behind the account. You may still have to confirm a withdrawal with a password, authenticator, passkey, email check, or other control, but those checks authenticate you to the platform; they do not give you the platform’s private keys.

Account recovery may be available
If you lose a password or a device used for multi-factor authentication, a custodial provider may offer an account-recovery or credential-reset process. The exact requirements and waiting periods are set by that provider. Recovery restores your account access under its rules; it is not the same as restoring a self-custody wallet from a recovery phrase.
Your main dependency is the service
A custodial user must rely on the provider to protect keys, keep accurate records, maintain access, and apply its policies consistently. Service outages, account restrictions, identity-verification requirements, withdrawal rules, or changes to supported assets can affect how and when you use the account. The provider’s financial condition and operating decisions also matter because your access is tied to the provider’s platform.

How a self-custody wallet works
You control the signing keys
A self-custody wallet creates or imports keys that you control. The wallet interface lets you approve an on-chain transaction, while the blockchain records the resulting transfer. The provider of the app does not have a master password that can simply reset your wallet’s keys.
The recovery method is the access path
Most self-custody wallets use a sequence of words commonly called a recovery or seed phrase. Other designs can use a wallet-specific backup or an embedded recovery flow. The important question is not the label but whether you possess the documented method that can recreate the wallet and whether you can keep it private and available.
Transaction approval is your decision
Before a self-custody wallet signs a transaction, it normally shows the network, destination, asset, and fee information available to that wallet. You decide whether to approve it. A mistaken address, malicious website, or deceptive contract request can result in an irreversible transfer, so the approval screen deserves the same care as the key backup.
Wallet designs are not identical
Some products use a traditional seed phrase; others provide an embedded wallet with a different recovery and key-export design. Do not assume that two wallets from the same company back up or export keys in the same way. Read the wallet’s current documentation before moving funds, especially if you may later need to restore the wallet in another compatible application.
Custodial and self-custody compared
| Question | Custodial app or exchange | Self-custody wallet |
|---|---|---|
| Who controls the keys? | The provider controls keys for assets in the hosted account. | The user controls the wallet’s keys, subject to the wallet’s particular design. |
| How do you normally access funds? | Sign in to the provider’s account and use its services. | Open the wallet and authorize an on-chain transaction with the wallet’s keys. |
| What if you lose a password? | The provider may offer account recovery or a credential reset. | A password reset does not replace the wallet’s recovery method. |
| What if you lose the recovery phrase or backup? | There is generally no user-held phrase for the hosted keys. | Access may be permanently lost if the documented recovery method is unavailable. |
| Who carries the main security duty? | The provider secures keys and the user secures account credentials and authentication factors. | The user secures keys, backups, devices, approvals, and connected applications. |
| What should you verify? | Recovery rules, access restrictions, supported assets, withdrawal policies, and fees. | Wallet mode, recovery design, supported networks and assets, approval details, and network or service fees. |
This is a qualitative comparison, not a security score or a fee ranking. Features and terms can change, so check the current documentation for the exact product you plan to use.

What happens when you lose access?
Lost custodial-account credentials
Start with the provider’s official sign-in and recovery process. You may be asked to verify identity, replace a lost authentication factor, or wait through a security hold. The provider decides whether recovery is possible and what evidence is sufficient. Avoid people who claim they can bypass the provider’s process in exchange for payment; giving them passwords or authentication codes can create a second loss.

Lost self-custody recovery information
If the recovery phrase or wallet-specific backup is missing, a wallet provider normally cannot recreate it for you. Bitcoin.org’s guidance is explicit that permanently lost self-custodied funds cannot be recovered by a wallet provider or another party. A phrase photographed to a cloud account, typed into a website, or shared in a chat is not safely backed up; anyone who obtains it may be able to move the funds.
A damaged or replaced device
A device failure does not necessarily destroy a self-custody wallet if you still have its valid recovery method and the replacement wallet supports the same design. Follow the wallet’s documented restore procedure and verify the receiving addresses before using the restored wallet. If you do not have the recovery information, replacing the phone or computer does not restore control.
Security responsibilities in each model
For a custodial account
- Use a unique, long password and enable the strongest available multi-factor method.
- Protect email and phone accounts that can be used to reset access.
- Review withdrawal-address controls, login alerts, device sessions, and identity-verification messages.
- Use only the provider’s official app or typed web address; phishing pages can steal account credentials even though the provider holds the keys.
- Read withdrawal, suspension, and supported-asset policies before committing money you may need quickly.
For a self-custody wallet
- Write the recovery phrase or approved backup on a durable offline medium and keep copies in separate secure locations.
- Never enter the phrase into a website, support chat, form, or unsolicited recovery tool.
- Keep wallet software and the operating system updated, while verifying updates come from the official source.
- Check the network, destination address, token amount, and fee before approving each transaction.
- Be cautious with token approvals and decentralized applications; a malicious authorization can expose assets even when the phrase remains secret.
- Test the documented backup and restore process with a small amount or an empty wallet before relying on it for substantial funds.
Self-custody hardware devices are one physical format for holding keys. Hardware wallets can keep signing operations separate from a general-purpose phone or computer, but they do not remove the need for a trustworthy backup, phishing resistance, careful transaction review, or safe recovery procedures. A hardware format is an option, not a guarantee.
Why the exact product matters
One company can offer both models
Coinbase’s help documentation distinguishes Coinbase.com accounts, which it describes as custodial, from Coinbase Wallet, which it describes as self-custody with keys on the user’s device. Those are different products even though the company name is the same.

Kraken similarly describes Kraken Exchange as custodial and Kraken Wallet as an on-chain wallet. Its support material distinguishes a seed-phrase wallet from an embedded-wallet mode, showing why the wallet’s recovery design must be checked rather than inferred from the brand. Questions to answer before depositing or transferring
- Is this specific account or wallet custodial, self-custody, or capable of both modes?
- Who holds the private keys, and can you export or restore them?
- What is the documented recovery path for a lost password, lost device, or lost recovery information?
- Which networks and assets are supported for deposits, withdrawals, swaps, and on-chain use?
- Who authorizes a transaction, and what exactly appears on the approval screen?
- Which account, network, spread, withdrawal, or service fees apply under the current terms?
Choosing a model for a particular use
A custodial account may fit when convenience is the priority
Custody can be practical if you prefer a familiar login, platform-based trading, and a provider-supported account-recovery process. The trade-off is that you are accepting the provider’s controls and its ability to limit, delay, or change access under its policies. Keep only an amount and time horizon that match your comfort with that dependency.
Self-custody may fit when direct control is the priority
Self-custody can make sense when you need to interact directly with on-chain applications, hold keys without relying on an exchange account, or take responsibility for transaction authorization. It requires an operational plan: secure backups, a trusted device, address-checking habits, and a process for what happens if you become unavailable.
Using both is possible
These models are not mutually exclusive. Someone might keep trading funds in a custodial account and use a self-custody wallet for on-chain activity. Treat every transfer between them as a separate operational event: confirm the destination network, use a small test transfer when appropriate, and keep records of which wallet or account controls the resulting assets.

Confusing an account password with a private key
Correction: understand what a password resets. A custodial password authenticates you to the provider. A self-custody wallet’s recovery phrase or equivalent backup controls restoration of the wallet itself.
Believing a support agent can recover a lost phrase
Correction: assume that anyone requesting the phrase is attempting to take control. Use only the wallet’s published recovery procedure; if the documented method is gone, recovery may be impossible.
Approving a transaction without checking its details
Correction: pause at the signing screen and compare the network, address, amount, fee, and requested permissions with your intended action. Cancel when the request is unclear.
Comparing fees without checking the transaction type
Correction: separate platform trading fees, withdrawal charges, blockchain network fees, and wallet-service fees. A general claim that one custody model is cheaper is not established without a specific product, asset, network, and current fee schedule.
A practical decision checklist
Before choosing, write down the answers to these questions:
- Do I need direct on-chain access or only account-based buying and selling?
- Would provider-assisted account recovery be more useful to me than independent key control?
- Can I create, protect, and periodically verify an offline backup?
- Can I review every transaction and application permission before signing?
- What happens if the provider is unavailable, my device is lost, or I am unable to manage the wallet?
- Do the product’s supported networks, assets, recovery rules, and current fees match this use?
The right answer is the one whose failure modes you understand and can manage. Custody determines where control sits; your security practices determine how safely you exercise that control.
