The right ring depends on the individual diamond’s shape, facet appearance, 4Cs, setting and metal. Compare actual stones rather than relying on a style name or a seller’s cut label.
What makes a diamond a cushion cut?
GIA describes antique and modern cushion-cut diamonds as having curved sides and rounded corners. Face up, a cushion may look nearly square or more like an elongated rectangle; its proportions and facet arrangement vary from stone to stone. Shape means the outline, while cutting style describes how the facets are arranged.
That variation affects how a diamond handles light. Some cushions show pronounced fire; others have a subtler glow or a finer-looking pattern. Labels such as “brilliant,” “modified brilliant” or “crushed ice” can be useful starting points, but they do not guarantee a particular appearance. The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) advises that a beautiful cushion be symmetrical, with opposing sides mirroring each other. Examine the specific diamond in person or through reliable video, and compare it in more than one lighting environment when possible. Modern cushion or old mine cut?
An old mine cut is a historic style associated with a cushion-like outline, not another name for every cushion diamond. GIA describes old mine cuts as squarish with soft corners, a high crown, small table and large open culet; these hand-shaped cuts date to the 18th and 19th centuries. Their deeper proportions can make them look smaller face up than another diamond of the same carat weight, and visible color or inclusions may be part of their antique character. How to compare cushion-cut diamonds
Use the 4Cs—color, clarity, cut and carat weight—as a framework, then decide which trade-offs matter most to you and your budget. GIA calls the 4Cs a standard for comparing diamond quality, but a grade alone cannot tell you whether you will like a cushion’s outline or light pattern. Compare stones side by side when possible.
- Outline and symmetry: Decide whether you prefer a rounded-square or elongated look. Check that the opposing sides appear balanced and that the outline suits the ring design.
- Facet appearance: Look at the actual stone for the brightness, fire and pattern you prefer. Do not assume that a broad style label predicts the visual result.
- Color and clarity: Set priorities according to your preferences, budget and chosen metal. There is no universal minimum color or clarity grade that suits every cushion buyer.
- Carat and face-up size: Carat is weight, not a promise of visible dimensions. Compare each diamond’s measurements and face-up appearance; deeper proportions can affect how large a stone looks for its weight.
- Cut information: GIA’s official Excellent-to-Poor cut-grade scale applies to standard round brilliant diamonds; the round brilliant is the only shape that receives that official GIA cut grade. Do not treat a listing’s “Excellent” field as a GIA cushion cut grade. Assess the individual cushion instead. GIA’s engagement-ring buying tips explain the distinction.
Choose a setting and metal for the wearer
Cushion outlines work with a range of settings, including halo, split-shank and bezel designs. The setting changes the ring’s look and how it presents the stone, so consider the wearer’s routine, preferred height and desired level of detail rather than choosing by appearance alone.

- Prongs: They leave more of the diamond exposed and allow more light to reach it, but expose more of the stone’s edge.
- Bezel: A rim surrounds the diamond and provides more girdle protection, while giving the ring a different profile and appearance.
- Height and design: Consider whether the ring will catch on clothing or equipment during daily activities. A lower or less ornate design may suit an active routine, but the best choice depends on the wearer and setting construction.
White gold, yellow gold, rose gold and platinum are common options. Metal color can influence how the diamond’s color is perceived, so view the selected stone with the metal colors you are considering. No one metal is objectively best for every cushion. Verify the diamond and the purchase terms
Request an independent grading report for the diamond and check that its report number and details match the stone and listing. GIA says its reports describe the 4Cs, identify natural or synthetic status, and disclose treatments. For a GIA report, use GIA Report Check to verify the report information. A report helps establish what the diamond is; it does not replace looking at the stone’s appearance.

- Set your 4C priorities and spending range: Decide which characteristics matter most to you rather than applying a universal grade threshold.
- Try setting and metal combinations: Consider security, profile, daily activities and how the diamond looks with the metal color.
- Request and verify the report: Match the report to the diamond, and check GIA reports through Report Check.
- Read the seller’s terms: Confirm the current return policy and any other conditions before purchase.
