Currys’ May 2024 agreement with Microsoft and Accenture was a strategic technology-modernisation programme, not a disclosed software purchase: it set out plans to move nine datacentres, more than 2,000 servers and 200 applications to Microsoft Azure, creating infrastructure intended to support AI adoption. By its 2025/26 results, Currys was reporting practical AI deployments, but it had also paused part of the UK migration after delays and customer-experience impacts. The company has not confirmed that the full originally announced migration is complete.
What Currys announced
On May 9, 2024, Currys said it had selected Microsoft and Accenture to modernise, secure and simplify its technology estate. Avanade, the Microsoft–Accenture joint venture, was also named as a participant. The announced scope was to migrate nine existing datacentres, more than 2,000 servers and 200 applications to Microsoft Azure. The programme was presented as the cloud foundation for broader use of Microsoft AI technologies, including Azure OpenAI Service. Currys’ announcement
This was framed as a strategic collaboration, not an acquisition or a disclosed outsourcing contract. The public announcement did not state the deal’s value or duration, provide a responsibility matrix, give a migration schedule, or say whether applications would be rehosted, redesigned, replaced or retired.
Why cloud infrastructure came before wider AI use
Retail AI depends on usable access to business data: product information, stock and delivery details, service histories, customer interactions and repair records. If that information sits across disconnected or ageing systems, connecting it to applications and governing access can be harder. A modern cloud environment can provide shared infrastructure and services for identity, security, data and applications, making it easier to build and operate AI-enabled tools.

That is an enabling chain, not an automatic result. Moving servers to Azure does not by itself make data accurate, applications integrated or AI answers reliable. The value depends on data quality, architecture, security and privacy controls, testing, process redesign and employee adoption. Currys’ announcement named Azure OpenAI Service as an example of Microsoft AI technology; it did not establish that this was the sole model or service used in later deployments.
What the partners were expected to contribute
The announcement confirms that Microsoft, Accenture and Avanade would work together, but does not publish a detailed division of labour. The roles below are therefore best understood at a high level, rather than as a disclosed contractual allocation.
| Participant | Role indicated by the announcement |
|---|---|
| Microsoft | Azure cloud platform and Microsoft AI technologies, including Azure OpenAI Service. |
| Accenture | Transformation, systems-modernisation and implementation expertise. |
| Avanade | Participation in delivery as the Microsoft–Accenture joint venture. |
| Currys | Business owner and operator: setting priorities and connecting technology work to customer, colleague and commercial outcomes. |
AI opportunities Currys identified
The 2024 announcement described intended benefits, not guaranteed outcomes. It pointed to customer-facing applications as well as support for employees and corporate functions.
Rank #2
Product discovery and recommendations
Currys said AI could provide product information and suggestions tailored to a customer’s needs at the time. The commercial aim is to make it easier to find a suitable product; whether that improves conversion or customer satisfaction requires measurement.
Post-sales, warranties and repairs
The company expected AI to improve post-sales experiences and warranty services, with the longer-term aim of strengthening customer relationships. These are natural areas for a retailer with substantial after-sales and repair activity, but the announcement did not set out service-level targets or quantified benefits.
Faster information for colleagues
Store and service colleagues were expected to get quicker access to practical information, including product availability, delivery costs and add-on services. Currys also cited cross-selling and upselling opportunities.
Corporate and omnichannel work
The company said it would explore AI in marketing, human resources, finance, legal and omnichannel operations. The 2024 statement did not specify which applications would be built or when they would launch.
After-sales was an early use-case focus
Currys’ 2023/24 full-year-results presentation identified after-sales processes, including returns and repairs, as an initial AI use-case area. The same presentation included a £6 million target saving from outsourcing partners within a wider cost-efficiency programme. It does not establish that the whole target depended on the Microsoft–Accenture work, so the saving should not be treated as a measured return from this partnership. The migration encountered retail execution risk
Currys’ 2025/26 interim results said the company had planned to complete the UK on-premise-server migration before the 2025 peak trading period. After delays and some customer-experience impact during the summer, Currys paused the project. The pause created additional dual-running costs, as old and new environments continued to operate, but the company said the decision was intended to protect customers during its most important trading period. This is more than a back-office scheduling issue for a retailer. Systems supporting online shopping, stock visibility, deliveries, payments or service can affect customers and trading directly if performance or data consistency degrades. A migration window that seems manageable in a quieter period may carry much greater risk near peak demand. Dual running can limit disruption, but it adds short-term cost while teams maintain two environments.

In results published July 2, 2026, Currys described several AI applications in operation. The reported examples show that AI use had moved beyond the original announcement’s broad plans, but the results do not attribute each outcome solely to Microsoft, Accenture or Avanade, nor do they confirm completion of the original datacentre programme. Currys’ 2025/26 full-year results
- Returns: Currys said an AI-powered tool diagnosed issues and resolved them without a product being returned in 40% of cases. This is a company-reported share of cases, not evidence that total returns fell by 40%.
- Contact-centre analysis: AI analysed transcripts from half of customer-service calls. Currys said achieving that level of oversight manually would otherwise require 80 additional full-time colleagues. That is an estimate of equivalent review workload, not an announcement of job cuts.
- Repairs: AI was helping field engineers diagnose faults and arrive with the right parts.
- Colleague tools: Currys said AI tools had been rolled out to colleagues.
- Nordic customer records: The company said AI was helping unify customer records and surface insights for more personalised experiences in the Nordics.
The company’s results do not identify the specific model, Azure service or implementation partner behind each example. Nor do they establish a detailed financial return for the infrastructure programme.

How the programme fits Currys’ wider strategy
The cloud and AI work sits within a broader move towards a data-, services- and omnichannel-enabled retailer, rather than a standalone technology project. Currys had already been refreshing its technology estate; contemporary coverage cited Salesforce work supporting online shopping and the launch of Connected Media, a first-party customer-data platform for brand advertisers. Computer Weekly’s contemporary coverage
That direction connects product sales with services such as repairs, installation, delivery, protection and connectivity. Better information and integrated systems could support those operations, while customer data and personalisation may help make services more relevant. The commercial case still depends on whether improvements translate into measurable outcomes rather than simply adding new tools.
What remains undisclosed—and how to judge progress
Currys has not published the partnership’s cost, the full migration’s completion status, an application-level architecture, the exact split of provider responsibilities, or a detailed financial return. Its results also do not provide a complete account of AI governance, model selection or ownership arrangements. Without those details, outsiders cannot isolate the partnership’s contribution from Currys’ wider transformation programme.
Useful indicators for assessing progress would include:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Customer: avoidable returns, resolution time, satisfaction and complaints, warranty turnaround and repair first-time-fix rates.
- Colleagues: time spent finding information, repeat use of tools, training burden and escalation rates—alongside checks that automation is not degrading service.
- Technology: migration completion, availability and latency during peak periods, data quality, security incidents and cloud cost per transaction or workload.
- Financial: implementation and cloud costs, dual-running expense, quantified automation savings, conversion or margin effects and payback by use case.
The environmental rationale also needs measured outcomes. Currys linked a more energy-efficient infrastructure to its 2040 net-zero target, but a move to cloud does not prove emissions reductions in every case. Workload efficiency, utilisation, data movement and the carbon intensity of cloud regions all affect the result.
