Current Rates for a Business Line of Credit (Q1 2026 Benchmark)

The Kansas City Fed’s Q1 2026 survey is the latest identified business line of credit benchmark, but it reports rate changes—not exact segment medians or a quote for your business.

The latest identified benchmark for business line of credit rates is the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City’s Q1 2026 survey, released June 25, 2026. It reports that rates on new lines rose quarter over quarter at urban banks and fell at rural banks, but the report text does not provide exact median line-of-credit rates for those segments. This bank survey is a market reference—not a real-time quote or a prediction of what any one business will be offered.

What are current business line of credit rates?

The Kansas City Fed’s Q1 2026 Small Business Lending Survey is the latest benchmark identified in the sources available as of September 30, 2026. LendingTree’s rate overview, updated that day, also identifies Q1 2026 as the latest Kansas City Fed period then available. The survey describes lending at a subset of commercial banks, not the full market of banks, credit unions, online lenders, and other financing companies.

The report says the quarter-over-quarter movements differed by rate type and bank location: rural-bank variable rates fell, while urban-bank fixed rates rose. It does not state exact Q1 median line-of-credit rates for each fixed/variable and urban/rural segment in the report text. Its 6.7% and 7.1% figures appear in the term-loan discussion and are not line-of-credit rates. Read the Kansas City Fed’s Q1 2026 report.

Q1 2026 survey finding What it means
Rural-bank variable line rates decreased by 45 basis points quarter over quarter The largest reported quarter-over-quarter change among the new line-of-credit rates described in the report; it is a change, not the rate itself.
Urban-bank fixed line rates increased by 24 basis points quarter over quarter A change in the survey’s urban-bank fixed-rate segment, not a market-wide rate.
New line-of-credit balances increased 31.1% year over year The increase was driven by large and midsized banks; small banks reported a decrease.
Median line usage was 40.7% Outstanding balances divided by total committed amounts; median usage was 52.9% for fixed lines and 39.4% for variable lines. Variable-rate lines represented about 91% of total line usage.

The rate calculations use 96 survey respondents who completed FR 2028D for the last five quarters; urban banks made up about 89% of that subset. The broader Q1 release says 144 respondents reported more than $72 billion in small-business loans. These are different populations. FR 2028D is a quarterly survey of domestically chartered commercial banks covering small-business loan availability, costs, terms, credit standards, applications, and demand. See the Federal Reserve’s FR 2028D documentation.

How to compare a line-of-credit offer

A headline interest rate alone does not show what a revolving credit line will cost. Compare the pricing method, fees, and repayment terms on the same basis, and check which lender population and period an advertised average represents.

Fixed or variable pricing

A fixed rate generally remains unchanged for the period specified in the offer. A variable rate can move with an index. For a variable-rate offer, ask which index applies, what margin the lender adds, how often the rate adjusts, and whether the contract sets a floor or cap. The quoted initial rate may not remain the rate you pay.

Interest rate, APR, and fees

Ask for the APR or another comparable disclosure of total cost, then identify any origination, draw, maintenance, renewal, or other applicable fees. A nominal interest rate does not by itself include every charge. Some lenders advertise factor rates; a factor rate is not an APR, so do not compare the two as if they were equivalent. LendingTree’s rate overview discusses differences in pricing formats and comparison factors.

Draw and repayment mechanics

Confirm whether interest accrues only on amounts drawn, how minimum payments are calculated, when principal must be repaid, and whether repayment restores the amount available to borrow. A line with a lower headline rate can still cost more if its fees or repayment structure are less favorable.

Lender and offer scope

The Kansas City Fed figures reflect commercial banks in its survey, not every provider. When you see a national-looking average, check which lender types it covers, the measurement period, and whether it describes new offers, existing balances, or another population.

What can affect the rate a business receives?

A business’s offer can depend on its credit profile, financial condition, operating history, collateral, lender, and the design of the credit line. The survey benchmark cannot predict an individual rate, and the available evidence does not support estimating one from a single credit-score cutoff.

Applicants weigh more than price when choosing a lender. In the Federal Reserve Banks’ 2026 Report on Employer Firms, based on the 2025 Small Business Credit Survey, respondents cited existing relationships, chance of funding, cost or interest rate, speed, collateral requirements, and product flexibility. Applicants choosing online lenders put particular weight on speed and expected funding chance. Those preferences do not establish approval odds for a particular lender or applicant. How common are business lines of credit among applicants?

In the same Federal Reserve Banks survey, 43% of applicants for loans, lines of credit, or cash advances selected a business line of credit, while 20% selected an SBA loan or line of credit. Respondents could select more than one product, so these shares are not mutually exclusive and do not measure approval rates. Separately, 46% of applicants who were not approved for at least some of the financing they sought said lender requirements were too strict; that finding applies to financing applicants generally, not only line-of-credit applicants.

Could an SBA-backed facility be an alternative?

An SBA-backed working-capital or revolving facility may be worth investigating, but the SBA’s lender resource page is a place to find program information, not a quote for a borrower-specific rate. Eligibility, pricing, and availability depend on the program and lender; SBA financing is not necessarily cheaper or available to every business. See the SBA’s lender resources for loan programs.
