The company said it would use the funding to extend Phase 2 testing of amezosvatein, its shingles vaccine candidate, with 640 additional participants before selecting a dose for Phase 3. Curevo also named Moncef Slaoui board chair and added Giovanni Mariggi and Tal Zaks as directors.
Who invested in Curevo’s Series B?
Medicxi led the round. Curevo said new investors OrbiMed, HBM Healthcare Investments and Sanofi Ventures joined existing participants RA Capital Management, Janus Henderson Investors, Adjuvant Capital and founding investor GC Biopharma. These investor details were announced by Curevo on March 17, 2025.
The financing was intended to support clinical development of amezosvatein, rather than a consumer product launch. The candidate was described in Lilly’s later announcement as an adjuvanted subunit vaccine for prevention of shingles in adults.
What was the $110 million intended to fund?
Curevo said the financing would fund a Phase 2 program extension involving 640 additional participants, including adults over age 70. The stated purpose was to help finalize dose selection ahead of Phase 3. This was the plan at the time of the March 2025 announcement; the announcement does not establish that the enrollment or later milestones were completed.
#1 Best Overall
Curevo characterized earlier Phase 2 results as showing “excellent immunogenicity and improved tolerability.” That is the company’s description. The cited announcements do not provide enough independently assessed clinical detail—such as endpoints, adverse-event rates or head-to-head results—to establish that amezosvatein is more effective or better tolerated than another vaccine.
Who joined Curevo’s board?
| Name | Role announced | Experience described by Curevo |
|---|---|---|
| Moncef Slaoui, PhD | Board chair | Former chair of GSK’s vaccine business and former chief scientific advisor to Operation Warp Speed. Curevo credited his GSK tenure with contributions to vaccines including Shingrix, Cervarix, Mosquirix, Rotarix and Synflorix. |
| Giovanni Mariggi, PhD | Director | Medicxi co-founder and partner. |
| Tal Zaks, MD/PhD | Director, representing OrbiMed | Moderna’s former chief medical officer. |
Those biographies and roles come from Curevo’s announcement. Slaoui said he was excited to work with Curevo to “help perfect shingles vaccination,” expressing his view that improved tolerability could complement the efficacy of the current vaccine. Mariggi said patients, doctors and payors would welcome a new shingles vaccine. These comments are the speakers’ opinions, not independent evidence of clinical performance or market demand.

What happened to Curevo after the funding announcement?
On May 26, 2026, Lilly announced that it had entered into an agreement to acquire Curevo. Lilly identified amezosvatein as Curevo’s lead product candidate. The announcement establishes an acquisition agreement, not that the transaction has closed; it should not be described as completed without confirmation of closing.
