Trackers reported an estimated market-cap decline approaching $2 billion, but that figure was not audited, did not represent completed sales, and does not show that players collectively lost $2 billion in cash.
What changed in the CS2 trade-up update?
In its October 16, 2025 update notes, Valve expanded Trade Up Contracts to include Covert items, often called “reds.” The rule depends on whether the inputs are regular or StatTrak:
- Five regular Covert items can be exchanged for one regular knife or one regular pair of gloves from a collection represented by the inputs.
- Five StatTrak Covert items can be exchanged for one StatTrak knife from one of the input collections.
This created a new route to items that had generally been harder to obtain through trade-ups. It also gave Covert skins a new use as contract inputs, so demand for those items rose while the prospect of additional knives and gloves put pressure on their scarcity premium.
Why did prices move in opposite directions?
The update changed the relative usefulness and expected supply of different item categories. Covert skins became more valuable as inputs; knives and gloves faced a potential increase in supply through contracts. Contemporary coverage described Covert prices rising while knife and glove prices fell. Those category movements do not mean every skin moved by the same amount.

Ars Technica reported one striking example from Steam Marketplace data: the P90 Asimov’s median sale price rose from $10 to more than $100 in the immediate period. That is an example for one item, not an average increase across Covert skins. Ars also reported a Pricempire estimate that one rare knife’s minimum price fell by more than 50%.
What does the “$2 billion” market crash figure mean?
It refers to a change in tracker-estimated aggregate market capitalization: an estimate of the combined value of items, not the amount of cash owners received from sales. The estimates varied by tracker and timestamp:

| Report | Reported estimate | What it measures |
|---|---|---|
| Ars Technica, October 23, 2025 | Pricempire put the market at just over $6 billion before the drop and just under $4.3 billion afterward, a decline of more than 30% overnight. | A tracker-derived market-cap estimate over the first overnight period. |
| Esports.net, October 23, 2025 | Described the loss as approaching $2 billion. | A contemporaneous rounded estimate, not an audited total. |
| Tom’s Hardware, October 25, 2025 | Price Empire estimated a move from over $6.08 billion to a low of $3.08 billion within 38 hours. | A later tracker snapshot covering a longer interval. |
These figures are not directly interchangeable: they capture different snapshots and time windows. A market-cap estimate can fall when listed or estimated item values fall, even if owners have not sold. It is therefore misleading to say that $2 billion in cash vanished or that players collectively realized losses of that amount.

The October 2025 reports documented an immediate shock, but they did not establish its long-term outcome. Ars Technica included a forecast from esports team owner SAC that the market might settle 5–10% lower over the following few months. That was a prediction made during the initial reaction, not evidence that the market ultimately reached that level.

The estimates cited here do not establish CS2’s current market valuation or whether it has recovered. Historical figures from October 2025 should not be treated as present-day prices, and a dramatic percentage change in estimated market capitalization does not by itself show how much holders gained or lost through completed transactions.

What players and skin holders should take away
- The mechanic changed supply routes. The five-item contract made knives and gloves attainable through a new input path, while adding a use for Covert skins.
- Prices can react before the eventual supply is clear. Expectations about item availability and demand can move estimates quickly, but a sharp first reaction is not proof of the final market level.
- Market value is not cash value. Tracker capitalization estimates are not audited balances or records of completed sales.
- Do not treat the crash headline as an investment result. The reported aggregate decline cannot establish the amount any individual holder realized, and the available figures do not show the market’s current condition.
