Cryptocurrency investing can provide exposure to crypto-market assets, but it comes with substantial volatility, custody choices, and risks that differ by investment route. A spot bitcoin or ether exchange-traded product (ETP) may avoid some of the work of managing crypto directly; it does not remove the underlying asset’s volatility or make the investment risk-free. Whether any route fits depends on your risk tolerance, time horizon, and overall portfolio.
What are the potential benefits of cryptocurrency investing?
The main potential benefit is exposure to assets that trade on crypto markets. That exposure may suit an investor’s particular objective, but it does not guarantee a return or establish that crypto belongs in every portfolio. The SEC warns that crypto-asset markets can be highly volatile. Consider how a potential loss would fit your financial goals, time horizon, risk tolerance, and asset allocation.
Access may also be more convenient through some investment products. A spot bitcoin or ether ETP can provide market exposure through a securities-market product without requiring you to transact on a crypto platform or manage private keys yourself. The SEC says this can avoid some direct handling risks. An ETP is not the same as owning crypto directly, however, and it retains exposure to the underlying asset’s price movements as well as product-specific risks.
What are the main drawbacks and risks?
The SEC’s Investor Alert, “Exercise Caution with Crypto Asset Securities,” identifies risks that can affect crypto assets, platforms, and related securities. These are possibilities, not predictions that every asset or provider will experience them.
#1 Best Overall
- Price and trading risk: Prices can be volatile, and an asset may be illiquid. A market may disappear or an asset may cease to trade.
- Platform and counterparty risk: A company holding assets could fail or enter bankruptcy, and a platform could halt withdrawals. You may not be able to access or sell assets when you want to.
- Operational and security risk: Fraud, default, mistakes, technical glitches, hacking, and malware can result in losses or lost access.
- Regulatory risk: Rules and regulatory approaches can change.
- Structural and protection risk: Some crypto-asset securities may involve concentrated or opaque control structures and may not have protections available in other investment settings. Do not assume that a crypto platform or asset has the same safeguards as a conventional securities account.
These risks are separate from the question of whether an asset’s price might rise. A potential gain does not eliminate the possibility of losing money or being unable to access holdings.
How do the main ways to invest compare?
The route determines what you must manage directly and which provider or product terms you need to examine.

| Route | What may be convenient | Questions and risks to check |
|---|---|---|
| Crypto held through a platform | You can access the asset through the platform. | Who controls the private keys? What happens if the platform fails or pauses withdrawals? Review fees, asset-use terms, safeguards, and the limits of any insurance claims. |
| Self-custody wallet | You control the access credentials. | Can you secure the private keys and recovery phrase? What if a device or phrase is lost, damaged, stolen, or exposed? Understand transaction costs and how recovery works. |
| Spot bitcoin or ether ETP | You can obtain exposure through a securities-market product without personally handling crypto keys. | Check the specific product’s structure, custody arrangements, fees, and applicable protections. The product still carries underlying asset volatility and product-specific risks. |
| Crypto interest-bearing account | The account may advertise interest on crypto holdings. | Find out how assets may be used, including lending or collateral use, and consider liquidity, withdrawal, insolvency, and protection risks. |
What should you know about crypto wallets and custody?
A wallet does not hold crypto assets in the way a physical wallet holds cash. It stores private keys or passcodes that let you access or control assets recorded on a blockchain. Investor.gov’s December 12, 2025 staff bulletin, “Crypto Asset Custody Basics for Retail Investors,” states: “If you lose your private key, you permanently lose access to the crypto assets in your wallet.” A seed phrase may restore a wallet, so it needs secure storage and must never be shared.
Self-custody
With self-custody, you control the keys and are responsible for protecting them. That provides direct control, but it also makes key security and recovery your responsibility. A hardware crypto wallet is one type of physical device used for self-custody; it does not eliminate the risks of losing, exposing, or failing to recover private keys or a seed phrase.

Third-party custody
With a third-party custodian, another provider holds or controls access credentials. Before using one, investigate its background, how it uses assets, security safeguards, fees, privacy practices, insurance terms, and what could happen to your access if the provider fails. A provider may fail, restrict withdrawals, or use assets in ways that matter to you; read the terms rather than assuming you can always withdraw immediately.
Hot and cold wallets
A hot wallet is connected to the internet. A cold wallet is typically a physical device kept offline. Cold storage may reduce exposure to cyberthreats, but it is less convenient and can still be lost, damaged, or stolen. The choice is a trade-off between access and different forms of security risk, not a guarantee of safety.

An account that advertises interest on crypto adds exposure to the provider’s activities, which may include investing or lending customer assets. The SEC’s “Investor Bulletin: Crypto Asset Interest-bearing Accounts” says these accounts do not provide the same protections as bank or credit-union deposits. Treat advertised interest as neither guaranteed nor deposit-insured, and understand what the provider may do with the assets and what happens if withdrawals are restricted or the provider becomes insolvent.

How can you decide whether crypto exposure fits?
- Set a limit based on your risk tolerance, time horizon, and overall asset allocation before choosing an asset or route.
- Identify what you would need to manage yourself: price risk, platform access, private keys, or product terms.
- For a platform or custodian, read the terms on asset use, fees, safeguards, withdrawals, and what happens if the provider fails.
- For self-custody, make sure you have a secure plan for protecting and recovering keys and seed phrases before moving assets.
- For an ETP, review the exact product’s structure, custody, fees, and protections rather than treating all products as interchangeable.
- Check current tax authority guidance for your jurisdiction and transaction type; tax treatment and reporting requirements can vary.
