Crypto jobs and traditional tech jobs overlap in software, product, security, data, and operations, but the available evidence does not show that crypto jobs pay more—or are categorically less stable. Crypto hiring reports mostly track postings and role mix; government wage and outlook data describe defined occupations in specific labor markets. To compare offers, look at the work, guaranteed compensation, employer resilience, regulatory exposure, and location terms rather than assuming one sector is the better deal.
How crypto jobs differ from traditional tech jobs
Neither category is limited to software development. Both can include engineering, product, data, security, design, operations, marketing, and management. Crypto employers may also recruit for exchange or stablecoin operations, compliance and legal work, on-chain risk, finance, community and ecosystem roles, or mining and self-custody products. Which functions exist depends on the employer; crypto work is not inherently more technical.

Crypto roles: broad mix, but samples have different scopes
Bitvocation’s 2025 Bitcoin Job Market Report counted 1,801 postings from companies meeting its Bitcoin-focused criteria: Bitcoin-only products, a publicly stated Bitcoin-first commitment, and a contribution to the Bitcoin ecosystem. In that dataset, 74% of postings were non-developer roles. Product Manager, Executive Assistant, and Marketing Manager were among the frequent non-developer titles; frequent developer titles included Senior Software Engineer, Software Engineer, Frontend Engineer, and Full Stack Developer. Bitvocation also says 68% of its data sources were company pages and 27% were a Bitcoin job board. These figures describe that Bitcoin-specific sample, not all crypto, Web3, or fintech employers.
A broader, separately assembled snapshot comes from CoinGecko and Tiger Research’s H1 2026 crypto hiring analysis. In its 2,932 active postings collected through June 18, 2026, engineering made up 34.1% and compliance/legal 10.4%. The sample combined crypto job sites, company career pages, and Korean platforms. The report describes a shift toward infrastructure operations and regulatory compliance. It is a manually collected posting sample, not an official census, and excludes DAO contributor roles, freelance positions, and contractor arrangements.

Traditional tech roles: use a defined occupation as a benchmark
For a concrete U.S. example, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) groups software developers with quality assurance analysts and testers in its occupational outlook. Developers design computer applications or programs; QA analysts and testers identify problems and report defects. Typical entry for this role family is a bachelor’s degree in computer or information technology or a related field, though some employers prefer a master’s. This is one occupational family, not a description of every traditional-tech job. See the BLS software developers, QA analysts, and testers profile.
Do crypto jobs pay more than tech jobs?
The available figures do not establish a matched sector winner. They cover different occupations, countries, years, and kinds of evidence, so they cannot be read as a direct crypto-versus-traditional-tech salary comparison.
Rank #2
| Benchmark | Reported value | What it measures |
|---|---|---|
| U.S. software developers | $133,080 median annual wage in May 2024 | BLS occupational wage figure; it is not a technology-company salary survey. |
| U.S. software QA analysts and testers | $102,610 median annual wage in May 2024 | BLS occupational wage figure. |
| UK core cyber-security jobs | £55,000 median salary, based mainly on 2024 postings | UK Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) report published in 2025. Three-quarters of core cyber postings did not publish salary information. |
| UK wider IT | £48,900 median salary | DSIT’s UK comparator for core cyber-security postings, not a crypto figure. |
The BLS defines a median as the wage at which half the workers in an occupation earned more and half earned less. Its May 2024 figures and its 2024–2034 occupational outlook concern the United States. DSIT’s 2025 report on the UK cyber-security skills labor market concerns UK postings and uses 2024 data. The £55,000 cyber median was 12% above that report’s wider-IT comparator, but it is not evidence of a crypto premium.

CoinGecko/Tiger Research’s reviewed report and Bitvocation’s Bitcoin posting report do not provide role-level salary distributions that can be matched to these government benchmarks. A sound pay comparison would align role, seniority, geography, date, and compensation definition. Without that match, a crypto salary claim may reflect differences in level or location rather than sector.
Compare the whole offer, not just its headline value
Separate guaranteed cash from variable or contingent compensation. For each offer, identify base salary, bonus, equity, and any token component; then check the vesting schedule, liquidity, lockups, tax treatment, dilution, and what happens to unvested or illiquid compensation if employment ends. These are due-diligence questions, not evidence that token pay is always less valuable or that crypto offers always pay more.
Are crypto jobs riskier?
There is evidence of sharp changes in crypto hiring, but the available figures do not measure the probability that an individual employee will lose a job. CoinGecko/Tiger Research reports that new crypto job postings on major job boards fell roughly 80% year over year in January 2026 and notes restructuring announcements at named firms during H1 2026. Those observations describe a posting sample and announced restructuring, not a universal forecast or a guarantee about any employer.
Rank #4
For comparison, BLS projects 15% growth from 2024 to 2034 for the combined U.S. group of software developers, QA analysts, and testers, with about 129,200 openings per year over that decade. This is a broad occupational projection, not a forecast for every software company or a promise of individual job security. Traditional-tech employers can still face layoffs, funding constraints, or changing demand.

Assess employer-specific exposure
Sector label alone is a poor substitute for checking the particular employer and role. Before accepting, examine the company’s business model and funding or revenue disclosures, the team’s scope, how the role contributes to ongoing operations, and what the offer says about notice, severance, and unvested compensation. For a crypto employer, also understand whether the product or function depends on a particular market cycle or regulatory permission. The sources cited here do not establish individual employers’ runway or the value of a specific token package.

Remote work and geography are offer-level questions
In Bitvocation’s 2025 Bitcoin-specific dataset, 45% of postings—809 of 1,801—were advertised as remote. DSIT reported that 26% of UK core cyber-security postings in 2024 were marked remote or UK-wide. These figures use different scopes and methods; neither describes all crypto jobs or all traditional tech jobs globally.
Check the actual posting and employment terms for eligible countries, time-zone overlap, residency or work-authorization requirements, and required office attendance. “Remote” may not mean that an employer can hire in every jurisdiction.
Quick Recap
A practical way to choose between offers
- Compare the work. Match responsibilities, seniority, skills gained, and likely next roles—not just the industry label. Many skills transfer across software, product, security, operations, and data.
- Normalize compensation. Compare guaranteed cash first, then value bonus, equity, or tokens separately using written vesting, liquidity, tax, lockup, and termination terms.
- Check resilience and volatility. Consider the employer’s revenue or funding basis, dependence on market activity, and how essential the role is. Treat sector-wide posting trends as context, not a forecast for one company.
- Understand regulatory exposure. Ask whether the role is tied to compliance, licensing, custody, or other regulated activities, and how those responsibilities may affect the team’s priorities.
- Verify working arrangements. Confirm location eligibility, benefits, time-zone expectations, and in-office requirements in the written offer or policy.
