Justin Drake’s October 7, 2026 warning was a call to prepare for a hypothetical AI-assisted mathematical breakthrough that could threaten ECDSA—the signature system used to authorize many crypto transactions—before quantum computers can break widely used public-key cryptography. It was not a report that ECDSA had been broken. The dispute is over how much planning is prudent without evidence of a weakened cryptographic assumption, and how to avoid losses from a rushed response.
What Drake warned about
Drake, an Ethereum Foundation researcher, urged the blockchain industry to calmly plan for what he called “bunker mode.” As reported by The Block on October 7, 2026, the approach would involve a controlled transfer of funds—starting with large holders—to fresh addresses whose public keys have not been exposed and are protected behind a hash.

Drake said a worst-case breakthrough could arrive “in months, not years.” That was a conditional warning about a possible future attack, not a claim that anyone had recovered an ECDSA private key or demonstrated a working attack.

How the proposed threat differs from the quantum threat
The familiar long-term concern is that a sufficiently capable quantum computer could undermine public-key cryptography. Drake’s scenario is different: AI could help produce or accelerate a mathematical discovery that makes a classical attack on ECDSA practical. The proposed danger is the mathematics, potentially aided by AI—not a quantum computer doing the computation.

The Block also reported Drake’s illustrative scenario of recovering a private key within a week using a large GPU cluster. That was an example of a possible attack scenario, not a demonstrated capability or a reported test result. Unchained’s October 8 coverage likewise described the concern as a possibility rather than an established break.

What the 722 manuscripts do—and do not—show
The Block reported that Drake connected his warning to OpenAI’s publication of 722 mathematical manuscripts produced by an internal model. He described the development as evidence that “mathematical superintelligence is upon us.” That is Drake’s interpretation of the manuscripts; the cited coverage does not establish that any of them contains an ECDSA-breaking result.

- Do not treat the warning as proof of a breach. The cited reporting describes no demonstrated ECDSA break.
- Do not rush a transfer or wallet upgrade based on a headline. A mistaken destination, compromised recovery phrase, or misconfigured migration can put funds at risk; Buterin specifically warned about losses from rushed upgrades.
- Understand what the proposed address change is meant to do. Drake’s suggestion is to move funds to fresh addresses with public keys not yet exposed. It is a planning proposal, not a guarantee against every attack.
- Separate cryptographic risk from ordinary wallet security. The reports do not say that hardware wallets, backups, or other consumer security products protect against the hypothesized mathematical attack.
Drake previously discussed Ethereum’s post-quantum roadmap, the distinction between hash-based and lattice-based cryptography, and AI risk in an Ethereum.org interview published July 15, 2025. In that earlier discussion he expressed confidence in cryptographic soundness and greater concern about AI’s broader existential risk. It is useful background to his thinking, but it neither confirms nor refutes his later ECDSA warning.
