Recovery is a process; insurance is a possible source of compensation. A tracing service may help identify where stolen crypto went, but it cannot reverse a blockchain transaction or order assets seized. Insurance or a platform protection program may reimburse some losses only if the event, custody arrangement, and claim meet its terms. Neither guarantees that you will get your crypto back.
What recovery can—and cannot—do
After a theft, recovery efforts can include documenting the loss, reporting it, asking an exchange to review a receiving account, and pursuing legal remedies where appropriate. Blockchain analysis may trace transactions or connect an address to a service. It does not, by itself, return funds or give a private company authority to seize them.
The FBI states, “Private sector recovery companies cannot issue seizure orders to recover cryptocurrency.” Exchanges may freeze accounts under their own procedures or in response to legal process; a tracing report does not make a freeze or return automatic. Victims may also pursue civil litigation. The FBI’s September 2024 notice explains these limits.
What to do after a suspected theft
- Stop sending money. Do not pay a person who promises to recover funds or demands a fee to unlock a supposed recovery.
- Preserve the details. Keep transaction dates, amounts, payment types, wallet addresses, account records, messages, and any information that may identify the suspected perpetrator.
- Report the incident. In the United States, report suspected fraud to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3); the FBI also provides cryptocurrency investment-fraud guidance.
- Contact the relevant platform. If the funds went to an identifiable exchange or custodian, ask its official support channel to review the transfer. A platform’s ability to act depends on its procedures and any applicable legal process.
There is no generally applicable recovery rate or guaranteed payout established by the cited sources. Be cautious of anyone claiming a particular tracing method will ensure your funds are returned.

How crypto insurance differs from recovery
Insurance does not usually retrieve the transferred coins. Depending on the policy, it may compensate an insured party for a defined loss after a qualifying event and claim review. A platform’s security coverage may protect the platform’s holdings rather than give each customer an individual right to reimbursement. A stated coverage amount alone does not show who is insured, which losses qualify, or how a claim is paid.
FDIC deposit insurance is not crypto insurance
For U.S. readers, FDIC deposit insurance covers eligible deposits held at insured banks and savings associations in the event of an insured bank failure. It does not insure crypto assets, cover theft or fraud, or protect against a crypto custodian’s or exchange’s insolvency. A provider’s banking relationship does not make a customer’s crypto balance FDIC-insured. See the FDIC’s July 28, 2022 crypto fact sheet. These are U.S.-specific deposit-insurance rules; protections and remedies vary by jurisdiction and custody arrangement.

Platform custody coverage may exclude a customer-account hack
Coinbase says its crime policy protects a portion of digital currencies in its storage systems against theft, including cybersecurity breaches. Its explanation excludes losses from unauthorized access to a customer’s personal or business account caused by credential breach or loss, and says losses may exceed insurance recovery. The company says it will endeavor to make customers whole in a covered security event; that wording is not a guarantee that a particular customer will receive payment. The Coinbase insurance explanation and the National Association of Insurance Commissioners’ cryptocurrency overview describe this distinction.
Some platform programs distinguish unauthorized withdrawals from approved transfers
Crypto.com’s published app policy describes possible goodwill protection, up to USD 250,000 equivalent, for certain unauthorized crypto withdrawals following hacks or phishing. It excludes cases in which a user is deceived into authorizing a transfer. This is a conditional, platform-specific program—not general insurance for crypto holders or a promise that every eligible-looking loss will be paid. Check the current policy for eligibility and terms.

A historical wallet-insurance announcement does not establish current availability
In February 2020, Lloyd’s announced a Coincover-linked liability insurance policy for theft from online hot wallets, with flexible limits starting at £1,000. That announcement documents a product launch at the time; it does not establish that consumers can buy the policy today or that it covered every wallet or incident. See Lloyd’s 2020 announcement.
What may be covered depends on custody and the cause of loss
Coverage does not automatically follow crypto from an exchange account to a personal wallet. The available examples show why the details matter: one policy distinguishes theft from customer-account credential loss, another distinguishes an unauthorized withdrawal from a transfer the customer approved after being deceived, and FDIC coverage applies to eligible bank deposits rather than crypto.

The sources reviewed do not establish a universal personal policy covering every hacked self-custody wallet, lost key, compromised seed phrase, phishing event, or mistaken or authorized transfer. For any specific policy, check:
- Custody and insured party: Is the crypto self-custodied, held in an exchange account, or kept by a custodian? Is the insured the platform, the customer, or a group of customers?
- Covered event and exclusions: Does the policy address the particular cause—such as a platform breach, stolen credentials, phishing, social engineering, or a customer-approved transfer? Read exclusions and definitions rather than relying on a general word such as “theft.”
- Limits and how they apply: Is a stated amount per person, per occurrence, or shared across the provider? Is it an insurance limit or a discretionary benefit?
- Claims and payment: What evidence is required, how is the loss valued, and is any payment in fiat or crypto? Is payment a contractual entitlement or described as goodwill or an effort to make customers whole?
How to recognize recovery fraud
People who have already lost crypto may be targeted again through social media, messaging apps, advertisements, comments, or search listings. The FBI warns about upfront fees paired with promises of recovery, questionable tracing reports followed by further fee demands, and false claims of law-enforcement or legal affiliation. Do not send more money or sensitive identifying information to an unsolicited recovery operator; report suspected fraud to IC3 and review the FBI recovery-fraud notice.

Context matters when reading fraud statistics: the FBI’s August 2023 PSA reported more than $2.5 billion in cryptocurrency investment-fraud losses in 2022. That figure concerns investment fraud, not all crypto theft, wallet hacks, insurance claims, or recovered funds.
