Both outpaced the stock and gold benchmarks in the comparison, but the quarter’s results varied widely among crypto assets and do not establish long-term or risk-adjusted superiority.
How Q3 performance compared
CoinDesk’s October 8, 2026, report said digital assets ended a three-quarter losing streak and posted their strongest performance of the year. Its comparison showed a substantial gap between the reported crypto returns and the named traditional benchmarks:
| Asset or index | Q3 2026 return reported by CoinDesk | Reported ending level |
|---|---|---|
| CoinDesk 20 (CD20) | 52.7% | 2,447 |
| Bitcoin | 42.7% | $83,554 |
| S&P 500 | 2.03% | Not stated by CoinDesk |
| Nasdaq | 0.85% | Not stated by CoinDesk |
| Gold | 3.84% | Not stated by CoinDesk |
These are CoinDesk’s reported figures, not independently recalculated returns. The article does not specify the exact start and end timestamps, price sources, return conventions, or which Nasdaq and gold instruments it used. That limits precise replication and makes the comparison useful as a report of the quarter, rather than a fully documented cross-asset performance calculation. Read CoinDesk’s report.
Broad crypto indexes concealed large differences
The CD20’s 52.7% gain was not a typical result for every constituent. CoinDesk reported that the CoinDesk 80 rose 57.4%, about 14.7 percentage points more than bitcoin. The CoinDesk 100 gained 53.3%, while the CoinDesk Memecoin Index rose 45.9% and the CoinDesk 5 gained 46.7%—six percentage points less than the CD20.

Leaders within the CoinDesk 20
All 20 CD20 constituents finished the quarter positive, according to CoinDesk, but gains ranged sharply. Uniswap led at 220%, followed by NEAR at 200%, Chainlink at 100%, and Aave at 87.5%. CoinDesk also named Cardano, Ether, Sui, Avalanche, and Solana as assets that outperformed the CD20.
The article interprets the spread as a sign that protocol fundamentals and asset-specific catalysts mattered. The performance figures establish dispersion; they do not, by themselves, identify which catalysts caused an individual token’s return.

ETF flows and the market context
CoinDesk reported a reversal in bitcoin spot ETF flows: net outflows of $4.67 billion in Q2 became net flows of $6.36 billion in Q3, an approximately $11 billion quarter-over-quarter swing. It reported $3.54 billion in August and $2.65 billion in September, describing August as the strongest monthly total since July 2025.
CoinDesk associated the rebound with easing geopolitical pressure, a more constructive liquidity backdrop, and renewed institutional flows. It also said the expansion of longer-dated U.S. Treasury buybacks in August revived the “debasement trade” narrative. These are the publisher’s explanations of conditions surrounding the quarter, not proof that any one factor caused the returns.
What the report says about Q4
For Q4, CoinDesk pointed to spikes in long-end Treasury yields as a potential tightening force, partly offset by Treasury buybacks. It also cited accumulation by digital-asset treasury companies alongside ETF inflows. These are contextual considerations in the publisher’s outlook, not a forecast that the Q3 rally will continue.

What financial advisors can take from the quarter
- Separate the broad-index story from bitcoin’s result. The CD20’s reported return exceeded bitcoin’s, while other CoinDesk indexes and individual assets posted different outcomes.
- Keep the benchmark comparison in context. The reported Q3 gains were much larger than those for the named equity and gold benchmarks, but the article does not provide a volatility-adjusted or risk-adjusted comparison.
- Distinguish flows from price performance. The reported shift in spot ETF flows offers market context; it does not establish that flows alone drove the rebound.
- Avoid extrapolating one quarter. These returns describe Q3 2026 and do not demonstrate durable outperformance or support an allocation recommendation on their own.
