Keep the recovery phrase private: anyone who obtains it may be able to access the wallet, while losing it can make recovery impossible. The device keeps private keys offline; a connected app may still help manage accounts and transactions. Ethereum.org and Bitcoin.org describe hardware wallets as an offline-key-storage option.
What you need before setup
First check that the device and its official companion software support the assets and networks you intend to use, your computer or phone, and the features you need. Backup formats, supported assets, connection methods, and recovery steps differ by product, so follow the chosen manufacturer’s current instructions. The sources cited here do not establish a best brand or a complete current model ranking.
- A hardware wallet from a trustworthy source and access to the manufacturer’s official setup instructions.
- A compatible computer or phone, if the device uses companion software.
- A suitable physical place to record and securely store the recovery backup.
When comparing devices, consider supported assets and networks, backup format and recovery compatibility, operating-system support, connection method, whether transactions can be reviewed on the device, and how you will protect the backup.
How to set up the wallet
- Start the device’s official new-wallet setup. Use the manufacturer’s instructions for your exact model. Do not accept a recovery phrase supplied by a seller or another person; the device should generate the backup during initialization.
- Set access protection. Configure the device’s access control as directed in its official instructions. Exact menus and options depend on the model.
- Record the recovery backup. Copy every word in the exact order displayed, using the supplied card or another suitable physical medium. If the device offers a verification step, complete it and correct any transcription error before continuing.
- Install or open only the official companion software. Use it to manage accounts and transactions as the manufacturer directs. A companion app does not change the importance of keeping the recovery backup offline.
- Receive funds carefully. Where your model supports it, check the receiving address on the hardware device’s own display. A small test transfer before moving a larger balance is a prudent operational precaution, not a requirement established by the cited sources.
Protect the recovery phrase
The recovery phrase is the critical secret, not an ordinary password. Ethereum.org calls it the wallet’s “master key”; anyone who gets it may access the associated wallet, and losing it can prevent recovery. Ethereum.org security guidance and Trezor’s recovery guidance explain its importance.

- Never share the phrase with anyone, including someone claiming to be customer support.
- Do not photograph or screenshot it, email it, upload it to cloud storage, or paste it into a website or app.
- Enter it only when the hardware device itself prompts for it during a legitimate recovery process. Trezor states, “Never enter your wallet backup anywhere unless prompted by your Trezor device.”
- Keep the physical backup private and protected from loss or damage. A metal backup can improve durability where physical damage is a concern, but it does not protect against someone finding and using the phrase.
Trezor specifically advises against digital copies, including screenshots, photographs, email, and Dropbox. Its backup guidance also explains safe handling. Ledger discusses recovery-phrase protection and metal storage in its security guidance.
Backup formats are not interchangeable by assumption
Backup length and format vary by wallet. Trezor describes BIP39 backups of 12 or 24 words and SLIP39 backups of 20 words, and says the supported format depends on the specific device. Do not assume that a backup format or recovery procedure for one model will work with another; check the manufacturer’s compatibility instructions before relying on a recovery plan. Trezor’s format explanation gives these examples.

Plan for loss, damage, or a recovery request
Store the device and its backup securely, with a practical plan for what you would do if the device were lost or damaged. If recovery becomes necessary, follow the official instructions for the specific hardware wallet and use the device-led recovery flow. Treat any request to reveal the phrase or enter it on a website as unsafe; a legitimate support representative does not need to know it. For a software wallet’s recovery phrase, Coinbase likewise warns users to keep it private; that guidance concerns a software wallet, not a hardware-device setup. Coinbase Wallet help.

- The wallet supports the assets and networks you plan to use.
- You initialized it yourself through the official setup flow, and the device generated the backup.
- You recorded and verified the words in order without making a digital copy.
- The device and backup are stored securely, and you understand the model-specific recovery process.
- You use only official companion software and, where available, verify addresses and transaction details on the device display.
