No toy guarantees a developmental outcome—and no particular toy is required for a milestone. These 56 ideas are play materials and activities, not a ranking of tested products; choose the options that fit your child and budget, and join in when you can.
How to choose toys that support learning through play
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends choosing toys that match a child’s developmental abilities while offering a chance to explore new ones. Age labels can help assess both safety and fit, but a child’s interests, abilities, and need for supervision matter too. Think of a toy as a prompt for play—not a device that teaches by itself.
- Prefer flexible uses. Blocks can be stacked, sorted, or knocked down; a box can become a tunnel or a pretend shop. Open-ended materials leave room for the child to decide what happens next.
- Look for interaction. Talking, imitating, taking turns, and following a child’s lead can make a simple toy a shared activity. The AAP says face-to-face play should not be displaced by digital toys.
- Match the play to the child. A toddler who wants to move may gravitate toward balls, while another may prefer books, pretend food, or fitting pieces together. Offer a manageable challenge rather than insisting on one “educational” toy.
- Make safety part of the choice. Check the age recommendation, small or detachable parts, batteries, magnets, and the supervision required. Follow current recall information.
Building, fitting, and manipulating
These ideas invite hands-on exploration and problem-solving. Keep pieces appropriate to the child’s age and situation, and supervise where needed.
- Large building blocks
- Stacking cups
- Large nesting containers
- Chunky, age-appropriate puzzles
- Large shape-sorting pieces
- Large interlocking blocks, if age-appropriate
- Large wooden blocks
- Soft blocks
- Large stacking rings
- Large peg board with suitable pieces
Choose pieces that cannot be swallowed or become a hazard if detached. A set with many tiny accessories is not automatically a better choice than a few sturdy, easy-to-handle pieces.

Safety checks before play
- Read the age recommendation. The AAP says age guidance helps caregivers judge choking hazards, whether a child can understand how to use a toy, and whether it fits developmental needs and interests.
- Check for small and detachable parts. The CDC advises using age-appropriate safe toys and avoiding small detachable parts for very young children. Recheck toys as pieces loosen or break.
- Be especially cautious with button batteries and high-powered magnets. A loose component can be put in a child’s mouth, nose, or ear. Do not offer a toy if its battery or magnet compartment is loose or accessible.
- Look up recalls. The AAP advises removing recalled toys right away. Check current recall records before buying or continuing to use a toy.
- Stay attentive to the child and the setting. Follow the product’s instructions and supervise according to the child’s age, abilities, and the play activity.
