Keep it offline, private, and recoverable. Anyone who obtains the ordered words may be able to move the wallet’s assets; no legitimate exchange, wallet company, moderator, or support agent needs the complete phrase. If it may have been exposed, treat it as compromised and move funds to a newly generated wallet.
What a seed phrase controls
A seed phrase (also called a recovery phrase, mnemonic, wallet backup, or Secret Recovery Phrase) is an ordered list of words from which a wallet derives its private keys. Those keys authorize transactions. The phrase is therefore a wallet-wide recovery backup, not a password that can be reset. A correct backup can restore access after a device is lost, damaged, or reset, provided the backup format, passphrase, derivation settings, and asset support also match. See Casa’s definition and Trezor’s recovery guidance.
- Private key: a cryptographic signing key derived from the seed.
- Wallet address: a public receiving identifier that can be shared.
- PIN: usually protects access to a particular device; it does not replace the seed.
- Optional passphrase: an additional, case-sensitive secret that can derive a different wallet from the same seed.
“Master backup” is a useful analogy, but imperfect: possession of the words is generally enough to recreate control, without the original device.
How many words should there be?
BIP-39 commonly uses 12 or 24 words. Word count alone does not identify the standard: Trezor also documents 20-word and 24-word SLIP-39 backups, including single-share and multi-share formats. A 20-word SLIP-39 backup should not automatically be entered as a 24-word BIP-39 phrase. Record the wallet’s exact standard and follow its official recovery instructions: Trezor’s format explanation.

The safest setup for most people
- Buy a wallet from the manufacturer or an authorized reseller, inspect the packaging, and use the manufacturer’s setup process.
- Let the wallet generate the phrase. Never choose words yourself or use a website, random generator, chatbot, or another person’s phrase.
- Write every word by hand, in exact order, on the supplied card or another offline medium. Do not photograph, scan, print from a computer, email, message, or paste it anywhere.
- Complete the wallet’s on-device verification exercise.
- Store the backup in a locked, private location separate from the device and PIN.
- Record non-secret recovery metadata elsewhere if needed: brand and model, backup standard, whether a passphrase exists, and relevant account or derivation information. Do not record the words in that metadata.
Trezor says its backup card should not be completed digitally and recommends protection from fire, water, and theft: backup-card guidance and storage guidance.
What you must never do
- Never share the phrase with support staff, friends, moderators, supposed recovery services, or anyone claiming to help.
- Never enter it into a website, form, chat, email, notes app, spreadsheet, password manager, or cloud document.
- Never photograph or scan it, and never publish even part of it.
- Never type it into a computer or phone. The precise exception is an official, device-based hardware-wallet recovery procedure that requires entry on the hardware device itself.
- Never keep it beside the device, PIN, or instructions that advertise the wallet’s value.
- Never use a second-hand device unless it has been properly factory-reset and generates a new phrase in front of you.
A hardware wallet cannot protect a phrase that you upload or type online. Trezor explicitly warns against screenshots, photographs, email, and Dropbox copies: official backup instructions.
Paper, metal, and secure locations
| Option | Strengths | Risks and best use |
|---|---|---|
| Paper | Free or inexpensive, simple, discreet | Fire, water, humidity, fading, tearing, and accidental disposal; suitable for modest balances when stored securely |
| Metal backup | Better resistance to many ordinary physical hazards; useful for long-term holdings | Does not prevent theft; assembly is sensitive; layouts and word-prefix rules vary; manufacturer “fireproof” claims depend on design, test method, temperature, and duration |
| Home safe | Convenient access and protection from casual discovery | Household disaster and coercion risks; the safe itself may reveal valuable contents |
| Bank safe-deposit arrangement | Geographic separation from a home disaster | Access, inheritance, jurisdiction, and bank-policy restrictions; verify that intended heirs or representatives can reach it |
Metal is optional, not a substitute for secrecy. Billfodl’s product page listed its standard model at $99 and Multishard at $235 in August 2026; prices, taxes, shipping, and availability vary by country, so confirm at the product page and official store. Trezor Keep Metal pricing should be checked at Trezor’s store. Ledger’s overview is at Ledger seed-phrase storage.

How many copies should you make?
More copies improve resilience against loss and disasters but increase the attack surface. One carefully stored paper copy may suit a small balance. A meaningful balance may justify two complete copies in separate secure locations. High-value holdings may warrant geographic separation, professional custody, or a multisignature design. Do not create numerous copies merely for comfort; every copy can be discovered, photographed, stolen, or used for coercion.

Splitting and multisignature solve different problems and add operational work.
- Complete duplicates: simplest recovery, but each copy is a complete key.
- SLIP-39/Shamir-style shares: several shares can be required to reconstruct a backup. Losing too many shares can permanently block recovery, while storing too many undermines the split.
- Multisignature: multiple independent keys are required to authorize a transaction, reducing single-key compromise risk but increasing setup, compatibility, and inheritance complexity.
- Seedless or mostly seedless services: some multisignature providers let you avoid retaining every individual seed, but the provider and remaining keys become part of the recovery model.
Read the format limitations in Trezor’s SLIP-39 explanation and Casa’s seedless multisig documentation. Splitting is not automatically safer than two complete, well-protected copies.

Passphrases: useful but unforgiving
An optional passphrase creates another wallet from the same seed. It is not necessarily a standardized “25th word.” It is exact and case-sensitive: a typo can open a valid but empty wallet. Back it up separately from the seed, because forgetting it can make the protected wallet unrecoverable. It does not protect assets left in the ordinary seed wallet and can complicate inheritance. Details vary by implementation; see Trezor’s passphrase documentation. Beginners should first master ordinary recovery.
Digital backups and recovery services
Offline storage is the conservative default because digital copies add malware, phishing, cloud-compromise, and account-takeover paths. Some wallets offer opt-in encrypted Google Drive or iCloud backups, and services such as Ledger Recover use provider-mediated encrypted fragments. These are different trust models, not equivalent to an offline-only backup: you accept provider availability, account security, identity and recovery procedures, and any subscription terms. Choose them only after understanding those trade-offs; Coinbase describes its mobile-wallet option at Coinbase’s recovery-phrase page, while Ledger documents its model at Ledger Recovery Solutions.
How scammers obtain seed phrases
- Fake support accounts, phishing emails, and impersonation calls.
- Fake firmware, wallet-update, migration, synchronization, or validation pages.
- Malicious browser extensions and wallet apps.
- Fake airdrops, NFT claims, staking pages, and token migrations.
- Malware capturing a phrase typed into a phone or computer.
- Physical theft, coercion, or an attacker learning where the backup is stored.
The rule is absolute: no legitimate support process needs the complete phrase. Casa lists these impersonation patterns at its scam-avoidance guide.

If the phrase may have been exposed
Treat exposure as compromise even if the website looked genuine, the file was deleted, the phrase was shared with someone trusted, or no funds have moved.
- Stop entering or sharing it, and do not wait for confirmation of theft.
- Create a new wallet with a newly generated phrase on a trusted device.
- Transfer assets from the old wallet to the new wallet.
- Review token approvals and connected applications; revoke suspicious approvals where the network and wallet support it.
- Disconnect the compromised wallet from websites.
- If the phrase was typed on a potentially infected device, use a second clean device and seek qualified incident-response help for substantial holdings.
- Ignore unsolicited “support” contacts and never send funds to an address they provide.
Changing a PIN, deleting an app, or buying a new device does not invalidate an exposed seed.
Test recovery before an emergency
- Read the wallet manufacturer’s official recovery documentation.
- Use a compatible spare or factory-reset device, not a random website or software wallet.
- Work offline where the instructions permit, entering the phrase only on the hardware device or trusted recovery interface.
- Confirm that expected accounts and addresses appear. Check BIP-39 versus SLIP-39, asset support, derivation path, account index, network, and any passphrase.
- Wipe the test device afterward if it will not remain part of the recovery plan.
Do not type the phrase into a computer merely to check it. A damaged device can generally be replaced and restored when the corresponding setup is correct; see Casa’s restoration guidance.
Inheritance and emergency access
A backup known only to its owner can be secure yet unrecoverable after death or incapacity. Document that cryptocurrency exists, the wallet or multisignature system, the backup’s location, compatible device or software, networks and assets, whether a passphrase exists, and who should be contacted. Do not put the complete phrase in an ordinary will, email, cloud folder, or an unencrypted lawyer’s document. For significant holdings, obtain jurisdiction-specific legal advice. See Trezor’s inheritance guidance and Casa’s self-custody standard.
