A “crypto card” can mean either a prepaid or debit-style card funded with value you already hold, or a credit card that lets you borrow and earn crypto rewards. The key difference is where the money comes from: a debit-style card spends your funds or crypto-backed value, while a credit card draws on an issuer’s credit line and is repaid later in fiat.
What’s the difference between a crypto prepaid card and a credit card?
The label “crypto card” does not tell you whether a card uses your own funds or borrowed money. Check the program’s cardholder agreement and funding rules rather than assuming a crypto-linked card is a conventional debit card.
| Feature | Crypto prepaid or debit-style card | Crypto credit card |
|---|---|---|
| Source of funds | Value you have loaded or assigned to the program; some programs use crypto collateral or a liquidity arrangement. | An issuer’s credit line, repaid later in fiat. |
| When you pay | Your available balance or assigned value is used for purchases. | You borrow for purchases and repay under the card’s terms. |
| Crypto’s role | Crypto may be converted to fiat at top-up or when you make a purchase. | Crypto may be a reward rather than the funds used to make the purchase. |
| What to verify | How funds are held, when conversion occurs, fees, issuer, and applicable protections. | Credit terms, repayment obligations, fees, and how rewards are earned and delivered. |
Crypto.com describes the distinction as spending funds already held with a prepaid card versus using credit for purchases with a credit card (Crypto.com’s card explainer). “Debit-style” is not proof of a direct debit from a bank account or of a conventional deposit account.
How do crypto card transactions work?
- You fund or access the card. A prepaid or debit-style program uses value you have loaded or assigned to it. Depending on the arrangement, that may involve a fiat balance, crypto-backed collateral, or another liquidity setup. A credit card instead authorizes spending against the issuer’s credit line.
- The card network processes the purchase. A consumer may ultimately fund a purchase with crypto, but that does not mean the merchant receives the customer’s cryptocurrency. Mastercard says crypto is converted to fiat before it reaches its network (Mastercard’s crypto program page).
- The account is updated under that program’s rules. Conversion timing, exchange rate, fees, and transaction records depend on the card provider. A purchase date and a later settlement date may not use the same exchange rate.
Mastercard also describes optional stablecoin settlement in select markets. That is a network or program settlement feature, not evidence that a cardholder’s merchant receives crypto at checkout.

When does the card convert my crypto to fiat?
There is no single rule across crypto cards. A program may convert crypto when you top up or when you make a purchase. The point in time matters: ask which rate source is used, what timestamp or processing date applies, and whether the quoted amount includes a spread or conversion fee. If a transaction is authorized on one date and settled later, the conversion rate may differ from the rate on the purchase date.
Also check which assets the program accepts and whether conversion is automatic or requires a separate action. Supported assets and features can vary by provider and country; Binance, for example, cautions that its Global Card may not be available everywhere and that features vary by location (Binance Global Card support).

Does the merchant receive cryptocurrency?
Usually, a card purchase funded through crypto does not mean the merchant receives that crypto. In Mastercard’s described flow, conversion to fiat happens before the payment reaches the network. Optional stablecoin settlement in select markets concerns how a program or network settles; it does not establish that the individual merchant is paid in the cardholder’s crypto.

What should you check before using a crypto card?
- Funding and custody: Find out whether the card spends a prepaid balance, uses crypto collateral, or draws on credit. Read the cardholder agreement to see who issues the card and what asset is actually held on the card account.
- Conversion and total cost: Check the conversion rate source, spread or fee, foreign-exchange charges, ATM and transaction fees, and any annual fee.
- Refunds and disputes: Read the process and timing for refunds, whether purchase fees are returned, and how to dispute a transaction. Binance says refunds on its Global Card are typically processed within 30 business days to the Funding Account in USDC, and purchase fees are not refunded; this is a Binance-specific policy, not a general rule for crypto cards (Binance Global Card support).
- Issuer and protections: Confirm the issuer and read the agreement for your country and card product. For example, Crypto.com’s U.S. prepaid Visa agreement, effective September 1, 2026, identifies Community Federal Savings Bank as issuer and says only USD is held on the card; it says cryptocurrency is not held by the bank and is not FDIC-insured (Crypto.com U.S. prepaid Visa agreement). Those terms apply to that U.S. product, not all crypto cards.
- Eligibility and limits: Verify availability where you live, identity-verification requirements, supported assets, spending limits, and any country-specific restrictions.
- Tax implications: Spending crypto may have tax consequences in some countries. The rules depend on your jurisdiction and circumstances, so check local guidance or seek qualified tax advice.
