Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings said it plans to minimize single cabins across Norwegian Cruise Line, Oceania Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises, according to a November 6, 2025, report by Cruise Industry News attributing the strategy to CEO Harry Sommer’s third-quarter earnings-call remarks. The report does not say that all solo cabins have been cut—or identify any ship, cabin category or date affected. The phrase “headed in the wrong direction quickly” is one commenter’s reaction in an r/NCL discussion, not a measured view of cruisers generally.
What Norwegian Cruise Line’s reported strategy means
The report describes a plan to minimize single cabins across NCLH’s three brands: Norwegian, Oceania and Regent. It does not reproduce a verbatim statement from Sommer, and it gives no ship-by-ship cabin counts, implementation dates or current booking inventory. “Minimize” therefore should not be read as confirmation that NCL has eliminated solo cabins or stopped selling them on particular sailings.
The report also does not clarify whether the strategy concerns designated single-occupancy cabins, broader cabin allocation, future ship designs, or availability on selected sailings. Those details matter to travelers: a change in how many cabins are designated or offered for one person is not the same as a confirmed fleetwide removal.
What cruisers are saying—and what the comments can show
The headline phrase “NCL is headed in the wrong direction quickly” comes from an individual commenter in the linked r/NCL thread. Other commenters expressed disappointment and concern that solo-cabin availability could decline; some interpreted the plan as affecting solo inside, ocean-view and balcony cabins while leaving Studios available. The trade-publication report does not confirm that category-by-category interpretation.

These posts illustrate why some solo travelers value the offering, but they do not establish how common that view is among NCL customers. One commenter wrote, “The availability of solo cabins is the reason I have sailed with NCL.” That is a personal account, not a survey result or an official company explanation.
How the reported plan compares with NCL’s earlier solo offering
Cruise Industry News says NCL had previously announced nearly 1,000 dedicated solo staterooms across its then 19-ship Norwegian fleet. The same report says NCL added Solo Inside, Solo Oceanview and Solo Balcony categories for sailings starting January 2, 2024. It reported that prices and availability varied by destination and demand, and that solo travelers could expect to pay less than for a traditional double-occupancy room.

That earlier expansion is useful context, but it does not establish how many solo cabins NCL has now, what is available on any particular ship, or whether any category has since been reduced. The figure is a historical one reported in 2025, not a current inventory count.
What to check before booking a solo cruise
Because the reported strategy lacks implementation details, use the booking information for the specific sailing rather than assuming a cabin category is either available or gone. Compare options using the same dates and itinerary where possible:

- Cabin type and space: Check whether the option is inside, ocean-view or balcony, and review the listed cabin dimensions and features.
- Solo category or supplement: Confirm whether the room is sold as a dedicated solo cabin or whether the price reflects a single supplement on a cabin intended for two.
- Ship and sailing inventory: Availability can vary by ship, destination and demand; verify the exact dates and booking conditions before committing.
- Solo-focused amenities: If social spaces or events are important to you, check what the specific ship and sailing offer rather than inferring it from cabin availability.
These checks help distinguish a real change in a particular sailing’s inventory from speculation about the company’s wider strategy. The November 2025 report alone cannot establish current fares or availability; those must be confirmed in current booking information.

The report does not identify which ships or cabin categories may be affected, when any reduction would take effect, or how much inventory might change. It also does not establish whether existing Studio cabins are protected. Until NCLH publishes implementation details or current booking information shows a specific change, claims that NCL has cut a particular solo category or removed solo cabins fleetwide go beyond what the report supports.
