Those figures measure campaign funding and participation—not profit, product quality, or proof that every reward was delivered.
What makes a crowdfunding campaign a success?
For the projects below, success has a clear, limited meaning: each met its stated Kickstarter funding goal and drew substantial backing. A goal reached is a campaign outcome. It does not, by itself, show that a project was delivered as promised, satisfied customers, generated profit, or built a durable business.
The campaign pages are primary records of pledged totals, goals, backer counts, descriptions, and funding dates. The examples are historical campaigns from 2015, so their totals should be read as records from those campaigns—not as current product recommendations or a formula for a new creator.
Two Kickstarter campaigns that took off
| Campaign | Project type | Funding period | Goal | Pledged | Backers |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pebble Time | Color e-paper smartwatch | February 24–March 27, 2015 | $500,000 | $20,338,986 | 78,471 |
| Exploding Kittens | Card game | January 20–February 20, 2015 | $10,000 | $8,782,571 | 219,382 |
Pebble Time: a hardware campaign with fast launch momentum
Pebble Technology pitched Pebble Time as a color e-paper smartwatch. Its Kickstarter campaign raised $20,338,986 from 78,471 backers against a $500,000 goal between February 24 and March 27, 2015. The total pledged was more than 40 times the goal, though a goal multiple says nothing about the campaign’s eventual costs or profit.

In a 2015 retrospective, Kickstarter reported that Pebble Time passed $1 million at 10:32 a.m. on launch day, describing it as the fastest project to reach that milestone at the time. That is a dated platform-reported distinction, not a current all-time ranking. Read Kickstarter’s launch-day retrospective.
Exploding Kittens: a game backed by a larger crowd
Exploding Kittens was a card game whose campaign ran from January 20 to February 20, 2015. It raised $8,782,571 from 219,382 backers against a $10,000 goal. Its total was lower than Pebble Time’s, but its backer count was substantially higher; the two measures describe different kinds of reach.

In an article published February 19, 2015, Kickstarter called Exploding Kittens the most-backed project on the platform at that time. The historical phrasing matters: the source does not establish a present-day ranking. Read Kickstarter’s article about the campaign.
What the numbers do—and do not—tell you
- Pledged total shows the money backers pledged through the campaign. It is not the same as revenue kept after fees, taxes, production, shipping, refunds, or other costs.
- Backer count measures the number of people recorded as backing a campaign. It does not measure customer satisfaction or repeat purchases.
- Goal multiple compares the pledged amount with the creator’s stated target. A low target can produce a large multiple without establishing that the project was fully financed for delivery.
- Campaign milestones show the pace of pledges at a point in time. Pebble Time’s launch-day milestone is a historical account by Kickstarter, not evidence that fast funding guarantees a successful outcome.
The available campaign records establish how much each project raised, its stated goal, its backer count, and its dates. They do not establish that every reward arrived, whether customers remained satisfied, or whether either project became durably profitable. Pledge totals alone cannot answer those questions.

What Kickstarter’s 2026 analysis says about blockbuster campaigns
In a May 6, 2026 article, Kickstarter defined a “blockbuster” as a campaign raising at least $2.5 million. The platform reported that campaigns meeting this definition accounted for 8% of newly acquired backers, and that backers brought to Kickstarter by blockbusters later pledged over $700 million to other campaigns. Kickstarter summarized its finding this way: “Blockbuster campaigns bolster our backer network, driving a large number of new backers to Kickstarter who have gone on to pledge over $700M to non-Blockbuster campaigns.”
Kickstarter also said that, in its comparison of projects in the same category with a different-category control group, it found no statistically significant difference in short-term funding trends after a blockbuster launched. These are findings from Kickstarter’s own analysis, not a guarantee that a large campaign will help or harm a particular smaller one. The article’s definition and results belong to that analysis; they do not audit the fulfillment or profitability of Pebble Time or Exploding Kittens. Read Kickstarter’s 2026 analysis.

Why these stories are useful to creators and backers
For a creator, the campaigns illustrate two distinct forms of visible traction: Pebble Time’s unusually large pledged total and rapid launch milestone, and Exploding Kittens’ exceptionally high backer count. Neither campaign establishes a single recipe for success. A project’s category, audience, goal, and ability to deliver all matter, and the campaign figures alone do not reveal the full business case.
For a backer, a campaign total can be a useful measure of demand, but it is not a guarantee. Read the project’s description and reward terms, assess what remains to be made or shipped, and treat funding success as evidence that a campaign attracted pledges—not proof that the promised result is assured.
