They do different jobs, so one is not a substitute for the other. A card issuer’s transaction alerts can flag activity on an existing card. Credit monitoring can notify you when information on your credit reports changes. If you want to make it harder for someone to open credit in your name, consider a free credit freeze or bureau fraud alert. For a suspicious card charge, contact the issuer promptly.
First, know which kind of “fraud alert” you mean
People use “fraud alert” to mean two different things. A card transaction alert is a notification from a card issuer about activity on an existing account. A bureau fraud alert is a notice on a credit file asking creditors to verify your identity before extending new credit. Neither is the same as credit monitoring, which watches for changes reported to one or more credit bureaus.

That distinction matters because each tool watches a different signal. A card alert may help you notice an unfamiliar purchase, while a credit-monitoring alert may help you notice a new account or inquiry. A bureau fraud alert and a freeze are different again: they affect how creditors use your credit file when someone applies for new credit. None guarantees that fraud will be caught or prevented.

Transaction alerts and credit monitoring are primarily ways to notice activity or a change. A fraud alert and a freeze are actions on your credit file: one asks creditors to verify identity, while the other restricts access to the report. The right choice depends on whether you are concerned about an existing card, a change to your credit history, or someone applying for new credit in your name.

| Tool | What it watches or changes | What it can help with | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Card issuer transaction alerts | Transactions or other activity on an existing card account | Noticing activity you may not recognize | A notification does not investigate or secure the account; contact the issuer about suspicious activity. |
| Credit monitoring | Changes appearing on the credit report or reports included by the service | Noticing report changes such as a new account or inquiry | It generally alerts after a change appears; bureau coverage and alert frequency vary. |
| Bureau fraud alert | Adds an identity-verification request to a credit file | Asking creditors to take an extra step before extending new credit | It does not block access to the report. |
| Credit freeze | Restricts access to a credit report | Making it harder for a lender to access the report to open new credit | You must place it with each of the three nationwide bureaus and lift it when needed. |
Which one do you need?
If you are concerned about a card you already use
Use the card issuer’s transaction notifications if available, and check the account’s activity. If a charge looks unfamiliar, contact the issuer promptly rather than relying on a notification to resolve it. Alert options, settings, and delivery timing depend on the issuer, so check its own account tools or guidance. The purpose of a transaction alert is to bring possible account activity to your attention; it is not a determination that a charge is unauthorized or a replacement for contacting the issuer.
Keep the scope in mind: these notifications concern an existing card account. They do not tell you whether someone has applied for another card or opened a different type of credit account in your name. If you are worried about that separate risk, review your credit reports and consider a bureau fraud alert or freeze as well.
If you want to notice changes to your credit history
Review your credit reports. Credit monitoring can add notifications when information changes on the reports it covers, but it is a detection tool, not a block against new credit or incorrect information appearing. Before paying for it, confirm which bureaus and types of changes are monitored. An alert about a new account or inquiry is a prompt to inspect the report and decide what action is needed; the monitoring service itself does not correct the entry or keep it from appearing.

You can also check your reports directly. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) says consumers can obtain free credit reports weekly from the nationwide credit reporting companies. That option is useful whether or not you subscribe to monitoring: a service’s alert is only a signal, while the report lets you review the information recorded in your file.
If you are worried someone may apply for new credit in your name
A bureau fraud alert asks creditors to verify your identity before granting new credit. A freeze goes further by restricting access to the report. Both are free under Federal Trade Commission guidance. Choose based on whether you want an additional identity-check step or a restriction on report access. An alert is not a freeze, and placing an alert with one bureau does not block access to your report.
An initial fraud alert lasts one year. You can place it with one of the three nationwide credit bureaus, and that bureau must notify the other two. A freeze, by contrast, must be placed separately with all three. It remains in place until you lift it. If you expect to apply for a loan, card, or other credit, account for the possibility that you will need to lift the freeze so a legitimate lender can access the report.

If identity theft is already happening
Act on the affected accounts and your broader identity records, not just the alert that first brought the problem to your attention. The CFPB advises contacting financial institutions to close compromised accounts, reporting identity theft at IdentityTheft.gov, and considering a fraud alert or freeze. These steps address different parts of the problem: the financial institution can address the compromised account, while a report or credit-file measure can help you respond to identity misuse involving credit.
If the first sign is a suspicious card transaction, contact the issuer promptly. If you discover a new account or other credit-file change you do not recognize, review the report and consider the broader identity-theft steps. One signal does not establish the full scope of the issue, so avoid treating a card notification or a monitoring alert as the complete response.
How card transaction alerts fit into a response
A transaction notification is an early warning about possible activity on a particular existing card. It is not proof that a charge is fraudulent, and not receiving an alert does not establish that an account is safe. Issuers determine which activities trigger notifications and how those notices are delivered. The reviewed federal guidance does not set universal settings or delivery times for card alerts, so verify those details with your issuer rather than assuming every card works alike.
- Check the transaction details. Compare the amount, date, and merchant description with your own purchases. A merchant name on a statement may differ from the name you remember, so investigate before deciding a charge is unauthorized. If you still do not recognize it, treat the notification as a reason to follow up, not as a final verdict.
- Contact the card issuer promptly if you do not recognize it. Use the issuer’s official app, website, or the contact method on your card or statement. Ask how to dispute the transaction and protect the account. The issuer is the appropriate place to report possible unauthorized activity on that card.
- Follow the issuer’s instructions. The issuer can explain what steps apply to that account. Do not assume that turning on notifications alone secures it or resolves a disputed charge. A notification only reports a signal; the issuer’s instructions are the next step for investigating and addressing it.
- Keep checking the account. Review activity for additional unfamiliar transactions and follow up on the issuer’s investigation as requested. Checking the card account does not replace reviewing a credit report if you also suspect someone has used your identity to seek new credit.
This process addresses activity on the card account. It does not tell you whether a new credit account or inquiry has appeared on your credit file. Likewise, a credit report change does not by itself tell you whether a particular purchase on your card is unauthorized. Treat each as a separate signal and contact the institution responsible for the account or record in question.
What credit monitoring can—and cannot—tell you
Credit monitoring watches credit-report information, which can include changes such as a new account, an inquiry, or changed personal information. It can make a report change easier to spot, but it only reflects information within the service’s stated coverage. Coverage of all three nationwide bureaus, the information sources checked, and how quickly alerts are sent can differ by service. An alert may arrive after the underlying change has been reported; monitoring is not a system that prevents a lender from receiving an application or stops an entry from appearing.
The CFPB explains that paid monitoring alerts consumers after changes occur on their reports; it does not prevent negative or incorrect information from appearing. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) also notes that credit monitoring will not alert you when someone withdraws money from a bank account or uses your Social Security number to claim a tax refund. Monitoring should therefore be treated as one way to notice certain credit-file changes, not as comprehensive identity-theft protection. It does not cover every account or every misuse of personal information.

That limitation is important when deciding what a service can reasonably do for you. If your concern is an existing card, issuer alerts and account review are more directly connected to that account. If you want to notice changes on a credit file, monitoring may add convenience, but check the reports and coverage included. If your concern is someone obtaining new credit using your identity, a fraud alert or freeze is the credit-file measure to consider rather than assuming a paid notification service will stop an application.
You can obtain free credit reports weekly from the nationwide credit reporting companies, according to CFPB guidance. Checking reports directly can help you review the underlying information rather than relying only on a service’s notifications. It is also an alternative for someone who wants to inspect credit-file information without purchasing a monitoring plan. A report review and a monitoring subscription are not the same thing: one is a way to examine the file, while the other can send notifications about covered changes.
Fraud alert or freeze: choose the credit-file action
Use a fraud alert when you want creditors to verify identity
An initial fraud alert is free, lasts one year, and can be placed with one nationwide credit bureau. That bureau must notify the other two. The alert asks creditors to take steps to verify your identity before extending new credit; it does not prevent them from accessing your report. You do not need to place the initial alert separately at all three bureaus, but remember that the alert is a request for verification, not a restriction on report access.
Recommended Free Tools
This is a request for extra verification, not a guarantee that every application will be stopped. It may suit someone who wants an identity-check signal on the file without restricting report access. Because the alert does not block access to the report, do not confuse it with the stronger access restriction provided by a freeze.
Use a freeze when you want to restrict report access
A credit freeze is free and remains in place until you lift it. You need to contact each of the three nationwide credit bureaus separately to place one. A lender generally cannot open new credit without access to the report, so a freeze can be a stronger barrier when you are not applying for credit. A freeze is about access to your credit report; it is not a notice about transactions on an existing card.
If you later apply for a loan, card, or other credit, you may need to lift the freeze so a legitimate lender can access the report. Plan for that step when an application is coming up. The key practical difference is not a price—both measures are free under FTC guidance—but how they affect access: an alert asks for identity verification, while a freeze restricts access until you lift it.

How to compare a paid monitoring service
Paid monitoring is optional. Services can differ in the reports and other data they check, the events that trigger alerts, and the recovery help they include. Compare the terms that determine whether the service fits your needs rather than treating “monitoring” as a uniform product. No one feature label guarantees that a service checks every bureau or every kind of identity signal.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Bureau coverage: Find out whether it checks one, two, or all three nationwide credit reports. A service that covers fewer reports may not show you changes recorded by a bureau it does not monitor.
- Monitoring scope: Check what kinds of report changes and other information sources are included; do not assume every service tracks the same signals. Ask which changes trigger an alert and what the service does not monitor.
- Alert timing and delivery: Look for how frequently the service checks and how it notifies you. These details vary. Confirm whether the service describes notification timing, rather than assuming an alert is immediate.
- Recovery assistance: Establish whether help is included, what it covers, and how to access it. Recovery features are distinct from simply being notified that a report has changed.
- Cost and trial terms: Check the ongoing price, when a trial converts to a paid plan, and whether fees change after an introductory period. The sources reviewed do not establish a standard price for paid monitoring, so compare the current terms of the plan you are considering.
- Cancellation: Read the cancellation requirements and timing before enrolling. Knowing how to end a plan matters particularly when a trial becomes paid or an introductory price expires.
Free reports, fraud alerts, and freezes are alternatives for consumers who want to review their files or take action without buying a monitoring plan. The CFPB’s consumer guidance, last reviewed September 5, 2025, cautions that monitoring services generally alert after information has been stolen rather than protecting personal information from theft. That does not mean a notification has no value; it means its value is detection and awareness, not prevention.
There is no single paid plan that can be recommended for everyone on the basis of the service name alone. A plan may be more or less relevant depending on which bureaus and information sources it covers, the alert triggers, any recovery help, and its total price and cancellation terms. Compare those specifics with the free options and with the risk you are trying to address. Do not pay for monitoring on the assumption that it will block someone from using your information.
A practical way to combine the tools
Match the tool to the risk rather than choosing only one label. For day-to-day card activity, issuer notifications and account review address the existing card. For changes recorded on credit reports, report review or monitoring helps you notice the change. For applications made in your name, a fraud alert or freeze changes how creditors can proceed with your file.
These tools can be combined because they serve different purposes. For example, someone concerned about both unauthorized purchases on an existing card and applications for new credit can use the issuer’s transaction notifications and consider a credit-file alert or freeze. Adding monitoring may provide notifications about covered report changes, but it does not replace either the issuer response or the credit-file action. Choose based on the concern, not on the assumption that one product covers every kind of fraud.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are a card fraud alert and a bureau fraud alert the same thing?
No. A card issuer’s transaction alert notifies you about activity on an existing card account. A bureau fraud alert is placed on a credit file and asks creditors to verify your identity before extending new credit. It does not block access to the report.
Does credit monitoring stop someone from opening an account in my name?
No. Credit monitoring generally notifies you after covered changes appear on a credit report; it does not prevent new or incorrect information from appearing. If you want a credit-file measure for new-credit applications, consider a free bureau fraud alert or credit freeze.
Is a fraud alert or a credit freeze free?
Yes. FTC guidance says both are free. An initial fraud alert lasts one year and can be placed with one nationwide bureau, which must notify the other two. A freeze must be placed separately with all three nationwide bureaus and remains until you lift it.

Not necessarily. Credit monitoring watches changes within the credit reports and other coverage stated by the service. The FTC says credit monitoring will not alert you when someone withdraws money from a bank account or uses your Social Security number to claim a tax refund. For suspicious card activity, contact the card issuer.
What should I do if I see a card charge I do not recognize?

Do I need paid monitoring if I can get free credit reports?
Not necessarily. CFPB guidance says consumers can obtain free credit reports weekly from the nationwide credit reporting companies. Paid monitoring is optional and may add notifications or recovery help, but compare bureau coverage, monitored information, alert timing, cost, trial conversion, and cancellation terms before enrolling.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Use card issuer transaction alerts and account review to keep an eye on an existing card; use report review or credit monitoring to notice covered credit-file changes. A bureau fraud alert asks creditors to verify your identity, while a free freeze restricts access to your reports and must be placed with all three nationwide bureaus. Monitoring can notify you after a change, but it does not prevent identity theft. For a suspicious charge, contact the issuer promptly; for identity theft, contact affected financial institutions, report it at IdentityTheft.gov, and consider an alert or freeze.
