A credit-card cash advance and a broker’s margin loan are both borrowing, but their costs, repayment rules and risks differ. A securities-backed line of credit is a third, separate loan—and may prohibit investing with its proceeds. Compare the actual agreements before borrowing to invest: there is no universal rate comparison that makes one option cheaper for everyone.
First, clarify what “brokerage funding” means
People asking whether they can use a credit card to fund a brokerage account may mean three different things. The distinction matters because only two of them are loans.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Cash-account deposit: You transfer money you already have into a brokerage account. The deposit does not create a broker loan. In a cash account, you must pay the full amount for a securities purchase; payment and settlement rules still apply. The SEC explains cash-account rules, including violations such as freeriding, in its updated cash-account bulletin.
- Margin loan: You borrow from your broker against securities or other account collateral to finance purchases or other permitted activity. Interest and collateral requirements apply, and the broker may liquidate holdings if your account no longer meets its requirements.
- Securities-backed line of credit (SBLOC): You borrow from a lender using eligible portfolio assets as collateral. It is separate from a margin loan, and its permitted uses depend on the lender’s agreement. It may not be available for buying securities.
These products are not interchangeable. The SEC put it plainly in its 2017 alert: “While both involve borrowing money to buy investments, using a margin account is not the same as using a credit card to buy securities.” Read the SEC alert on credit cards and investments for its discussion of the risks.
Can you use a cash advance to fund a brokerage account?
Do not assume the transaction will work simply because a card has available credit. Whether a brokerage or payment processor accepts a card-funded transaction—and how your issuer classifies it—depends on the parties and their terms. A transaction might be declined or treated in a way that triggers cash-advance pricing. Ask both the brokerage and card issuer about the specific transaction before relying on it. The issuer’s card agreement controls your cash-advance limit, fees, APR and other applicable terms.

Under Regulation Z, card issuers must disclose applicable cash-advance APR and fee information. The CFPB’s commentary also treats an ATM cash-advance charge imposed by an issuer as a finance charge. Those disclosure rules do not establish that every transfer to a brokerage will be accepted or classified identically. Check the CFPB’s Regulation Z commentary on finance charges and, more importantly for your cost, the current card agreement.
A cash advance is a loan against your card account, not a purchase funded by an ordinary brokerage deposit. Do not assume purchases’ grace-period treatment applies. The relevant timing and interest rules are the ones in your card agreement. The CFPB says the total cost depends on the amount advanced, upfront fees, rates and repayment timing—not just the APR. Its 2023 Consumer Credit Card Market Report found $717 million in cash-advance fees in its Y-14+ data in 2022. That is aggregate issuer fee volume, not an estimate of what a typical individual pays. The report also found that average cash-advance fees represented 5.1% to 5.6% of volume in each quarter since mid-2015; this historical measure is not a current fee quote or universal schedule.
How the three options differ
| Option | What is borrowed? | Main cost to check | Key risk or restriction |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cash-account deposit | Nothing, if you deposit your own money. | No borrowing cost from the deposit itself. Other account or investment costs may apply. | You must observe cash-account payment and settlement rules. A deposit does not remove investment risk. |
| Credit-card cash advance | Credit against your card account. | Applicable transaction fee, cash-advance APR, accrual rules and time to repayment, as stated by the issuer. | The debt remains due even if an investment falls. Missed or short payments can bring fees and credit consequences under the card agreement. |
| Broker margin loan | A broker loan secured by account assets. | The broker’s current margin rate, how interest accrues and how long the balance will remain outstanding. | Equity shortfalls can lead to demands for funds or securities and forced sales, potentially without advance notice. |
| SBLOC | A separate lender’s loan secured by eligible portfolio holdings. | The lender’s rate, fees, collateral thresholds and repayment terms. | Permitted uses and call rights vary by contract; a lender may restrict investment use. |
The table describes product mechanics, not a price ranking. Current card pricing, broker margin rates and house requirements, and SBLOC eligibility and terms vary. Obtain the actual agreements and schedules for the accounts you would use.

How to compare the real cost of borrowing
There is no current universal APR comparison that establishes whether a cash advance or margin borrowing is cheaper. A lower stated rate alone is not enough: an upfront fee, the period outstanding, interest accrual and repayment requirements all affect the amount you owe. Compare offers over the same borrowing amount and expected repayment period, using the terms that apply to you.
- Confirm the transaction and product. Ask whether the card issuer will treat the intended transfer as a cash advance and whether the brokerage will accept it. For margin or an SBLOC, verify that the account is eligible and the planned use is permitted.
- Record every upfront cost. For a card, check any cash-advance transaction fee. For an SBLOC or other credit line, check for origination or other applicable fees. Use the exact disclosed charge rather than a general market figure.
- Find the applicable rate and how it can change. Use the cash-advance APR in the card agreement or the broker’s current margin schedule. For a line of credit, use its own agreement. Note whether the rate is variable and what can cause it to change.
- Check when interest starts and how it accrues. Read the contract for the start date, calculation method, compounding or accrual conventions, and any grace-period terms that apply. Do not assume card purchases and cash advances are treated alike.
- Set a realistic repayment period. Estimate how long the balance could remain if the investment does not rise or you cannot sell at your preferred time. A short-term plan should not depend on an optimistic market move.
- Read payment and repayment rules. Check the required payment, due dates, payment allocation rules and consequences of paying less than the full balance. For a broker loan or line, establish whether the lender can demand repayment or additional collateral.
- Stress-test the collateral and investment. Ask what happens if holdings decline sharply, the lender raises requirements, or you cannot add cash promptly. Consider whether you could repay from income or other available funds without selling at a loss.
If you want to estimate a card advance, use the fee, APR, accrual rules and payoff timing in your own agreement. For a margin loan or SBLOC, use that lender’s rate and collateral terms instead. Do not substitute a national average or a sample rate for a quote that applies to your account; no comparable current all-broker margin-rate figure is established here.
What can go wrong with each kind of borrowing?
Cash advance: the investment and card bill move independently
If the investment loses value, that does not reduce the card balance. You remain responsible for repaying the advance under the card agreement. If you cannot make the required payments, fees and credit-score harm may follow. Borrowing against a card can therefore leave you with debt after the asset bought with the proceeds is worth less than you paid. The SEC’s credit-card investment alert warns about this combination of investment and borrowing risk.

Margin: the lender can act against the collateral
A margin account adds the possibility of forced liquidation. If the account falls below a maintenance requirement, the broker can require you to deposit cash or securities, or sell holdings to address the deficiency. The SEC says firms may set house requirements above the 25% FINRA maintenance minimum, and requirements can differ by firm and security. That 25% figure is not a promise about what your broker will require. A firm may raise its house requirements and may sell assets without first consulting you or giving advance notice. A fast market decline can leave little time to respond.
Borrowing also magnifies losses: you owe the loan even if the securities decline, and losses can exceed the amount initially invested. Margin interest reduces investment returns whether the investment rises or falls. Read the SEC’s bulletin on understanding margin accounts and the account agreement. FINRA’s model retail brokerage form illustrates that the customer remains responsible for repayment and interest and that positions may be sold to address maintenance deficiencies without advance notice; it is a model form, not your broker’s contract.
SBLOC: a separate loan, not a workaround for every investing restriction
An SBLOC uses eligible portfolio assets as collateral, but its terms and permitted uses are lender-specific. The SEC’s SBLOC alert discusses the risks and potential conflicts surrounding these loans, including situations in which an adviser or firm may continue earning fees on assets while a client borrows against them. Review eligibility, collateral thresholds, variable-rate terms, repayment demands and what the lender can do if the collateral falls in value.

Restrictions can be explicit. For example, Charles Schwab says proceeds from its pledged-asset line may not be used to buy securities, repay margin loans or be deposited into a brokerage account. That is a provider-specific term, not a rule that applies to every SBLOC. See the provider’s pledged-asset-line terms and check the agreement for any line you are considering.

If you already have the money
Funding a cash account with your own available cash avoids borrowing costs from a cash advance or loan. It does not make a risky investment safe, guarantee the timing of settlement, or eliminate account and investment fees. Follow the broker’s cash-account rules for paying for purchases and using sale proceeds. The SEC’s cash-account bulletin explains settlement-related violations, including freeriding, and notes that specified violations can result in a 90-day account freeze.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf you are considering a card advance
- Do not proceed until the card issuer confirms how the transaction will be classified and you know the fee, APR, limit and payment terms.
- Confirm that the brokerage accepts the method. A declined or differently classified transaction can undermine your plan.
- Identify the source of repayment before investing. Do not make repayment depend on selling the investment at a gain or on a particular date.
- Include the card payment alongside existing obligations in your budget, and consider whether a market loss would leave you able to repay.
If you are considering margin
- Read the current margin agreement and rate schedule, including the broker’s right to change house requirements, demand more equity or liquidate positions.
- Determine what maintenance requirement applies to each holding and to the account as a whole; do not rely on the regulatory minimum as your account’s actual threshold.
- Consider how you would meet a demand for cash or securities during a market decline. If the only answer is to sell the same assets that serve as collateral, the plan may fail when you need it most.
- Account for interest as an ongoing expense that lowers returns, rather than assuming investment gains will cover it.
If you are considering an SBLOC
- Ask the lender to confirm that your intended use is allowed. Never infer that investment use is permitted because the loan is secured by investments.
- Review eligible collateral, advance limits, maintenance thresholds, rate changes and the lender’s right to demand repayment or additional collateral.
- Consider the effect of a collateral decline on both the loan and your broader portfolio, including any advisory fees that continue while assets are pledged.
What the available figures can—and cannot—tell you
The CFPB’s October 2023 report provides context on cash-advance fees, but not a current quote for your card and not a head-to-head comparison with every broker’s margin rates. Its $717 million figure is aggregate fee volume for 2022 in the report’s Y-14+ data. Its finding that average fees were 5.1% to 5.6% of volume in each quarter since mid-2015 describes a historical share of transactions, not a guaranteed fee percentage today. The report says total cost depends on amount, fees, interest rates and repayment timing.

The SEC’s margin bulletin describes the 25% FINRA maintenance minimum while warning that firms often impose higher requirements. Neither that regulatory floor nor another firm’s schedule tells you the requirement or rate for your own holdings and account. Likewise, an SBLOC’s availability, eligible collateral and uses depend on its lender. Card pricing, brokerage schedules and credit-line terms can change, so verify them directly before deciding.
Bottom line for the decision
Do not compare a cash advance with an ordinary brokerage deposit as though both were ways to borrow: a deposit of your own cash is not a loan. If the actual choice is between a card advance and margin, calculate the cost over your intended repayment period from the current agreements, then weigh the consequences of missed card payments against the broker’s collateral and liquidation rights. An SBLOC is a separate contract and may bar investing with its proceeds. If repayment would depend on a favorable market move, borrowing to invest exposes you to debt precisely when your investment may be least able to support it.
