In an early-June 2020 snapshot, a sponsored GamesBeat article named five mobile-app and game advertising creative trends: Connect the Dots, Puzzles, Noob vs Pro, Hidden Object, and Influencers. The article’s larger argument was that as ad platforms automated more of media buying, creative concepts became a key way for advertisers to differentiate themselves. That was Consumer Acquisition CEO Brian Bowman’s commercial perspective—not a neutral causal study—and the trend list is historical, not a guide to what is popular now.
What “creative is king” meant in the 2020 article
In its June 23, 2020 sponsored GamesBeat article, updated June 18, 2025, Consumer Acquisition founder and CEO Brian Bowman argued that increased platform automation had reduced some former advantages in media buying and ad technology. In that account, creative concepts—not simply the number of images or videos produced—were an important remaining source of differentiation in user-acquisition advertising.
Bowman’s case was based on the sponsor’s client work and operating experience, so its figures should be read as company-reported results rather than industry-wide benchmarks. Consumer Acquisition said creative optimization accounted for 75% of the return-on-ad-spend (ROAS) gains it generated for clients, audience expansion for 15%, and media-buying tactics and optimization for 10%. Those percentages describe the company’s stated portfolio breakdown, not a universal allocation of advertising results.
The five creative trends named for early June 2020
The article presented these formats as trends it was observing in early June 2020. It also warned that creative patterns change quickly and vary by genre; marketers should compare trend research with performance data rather than assume a format will work for every game or audience.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| Trend | What the name suggests | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Connect the Dots | A visual activity built around connecting points to reveal or complete an image. | A named format in the sponsor’s 2020 snapshot, not evidence of current popularity or results. |
| Puzzles | An ad organized around a puzzle-solving task or challenge. | Its suitability depends on the game, audience, and execution; the article does not establish a universal performance advantage. |
| Noob vs Pro | A contrast between beginner and expert play, often framed as a skill comparison. | A concept label from the 2020 list, not a measured benchmark. |
| Hidden Object | A challenge in which viewers look for a concealed item in a scene. | The article names the format but does not report a standalone result for it. |
| Influencers | Creative featuring or drawing on an influencer. | Included among the observed trends; the source does not quantify its performance relative to the other formats. |
The list is useful as a record of what one advertiser said it was seeing at that moment. It does not establish that all five formats were widespread across the market, worked in every genre, or remain current.
Why the article emphasized concepts, competitors, and player motivations
Bowman’s recommendation was to look beyond producing more variations of an existing ad. Consumer Acquisition said it reviewed thousands of Facebook and Google ads to build a visual taxonomy, and argued that competitive creative research could help teams discover concepts to adapt. The article’s conclusion put it this way: “Creative trends allow you to effectively steal ideas from competitors.” The quote is Bowman’s wording in sponsored content; in practice, the useful point is to learn from market patterns and develop an original execution, not copy another advertiser’s work.
The article also advocated grounding concepts in player profiles and motivations. It described this approach as drawing on game theory and horizontal segmentation: understanding what different groups of players find appealing, then using those motivations to inform the ad concept. Genre matters because a format that makes sense for one kind of game or player may not suit another.

For competitor discovery, the article named Sensor Tower, SocialPeta, and App Annie as research tools. It also pointed to the Facebook Ad Library as a free way to inspect competitor ads, while noting that the library does not show ad performance. Seeing an ad therefore provides evidence that it ran, not proof that it succeeded.
What the sponsor’s testing figures do—and do not—show
Consumer Acquisition reported that one to three concepts out of 20 beat the control in its experience. It also said it managed more than $3 billion in ad spend, ran more than 10,000 A/B and multivariate tests, and produced more than 100,000 image and video ads annually. These are the sponsor’s own scale and performance claims in the 2020 article; they should not be treated as independently established industry averages.

The company described a typical test lasting two to seven days. It explicitly distinguished its process from Facebook’s best practice of waiting for statistical significance, and acknowledged that its approach could produce false positives and false negatives. The duration and outcomes were specific to its scenarios and verticals. They are not a general testing rule or a substitute for platform guidance and appropriately designed experiments.
Consumer Acquisition also attributed a 29% ROAS lift to a revised approach that accounted for “creative history.” That is a company-reported result, not a guaranteed return or a broadly comparable benchmark. The article’s figures illustrate how the sponsor framed its own practice; they do not establish how much a particular advertiser should spend, how long every test should run, or what result a new campaign will achieve.

A second 2020 perspective: iteration, automation, and retargeting
A January 6, 2020 article from mobile game publisher Tilting Point likewise emphasized iteration and automation, while also discussing ad-spend optimization and retargeting. Its figures are company-reported observations and claims, not independent industry measurements.
| Reported figure | Attribution and scope |
|---|---|
| 20–50% user-acquisition performance uptick | Tilting Point reported this for studios finding new high-performing creative every two weeks; the article does not establish it as an independent benchmark. |
| More than 50% less time investment; up to 1,500 creative pieces per month | Tilting Point’s claims for its Creative Automation Tool, not a general production result. |
| 10–15% player lifetime-value improvement | Tilting Point’s observation for some games investing more in retargeting; not a general expected outcome. |
The two perspectives share an emphasis on creative iteration, but neither supplies a standardized cross-platform benchmark. Their reported measures also differ: concept performance against a control, production volume and time, ROAS, and downstream player value are related but not interchangeable.

How to use this historical account
- Treat the five formats as dated examples. They record an early-June 2020 observation, not a current trend ranking.
- Start with the game and its players. Consider genre and player motivations before borrowing a format seen in another campaign.
- Use competitor ads for inspiration, not performance proof. An ad library can reveal creative choices, but the Facebook Ad Library does not show whether an ad performed well.
- Separate concepts from variations. The sponsor’s argument was that fresh concepts matter alongside asset production; changing minor details is not automatically a new idea.
- Evaluate results with clear comparisons. Choose a control and relevant outcome measures for the campaign, and interpret short or non-significance-based tests cautiously.
- Keep company claims in context. Consumer Acquisition’s and Tilting Point’s figures describe their respective reported experience, not promised results for another advertiser.
