It draws on your checking account—not the bank’s funds—so it is not guaranteed like a cashier’s check. Availability, fees, and requirements vary by bank; confirm the details with your bank and the person or business you plan to pay.
What is a counter check?
A counter check, sometimes called a temporary check, is a personal check supplied by the bank that holds your checking account. It can be useful if you need a paper check while an order of regular checks is pending. Chase says a bank may be able to issue temporary checks while a customer waits for ordered checks: How to Order Checks and Checkbooks.
The check is drawn against your account and depends on available funds there. The fact that the bank printed or supplied it does not make the payment prepaid or guaranteed.
How counter checks work
- Ask the bank that holds your checking account whether it provides counter checks for your account.
- Follow the bank’s instructions for requesting them. The bank may require a branch visit or another approved channel, and may ask you to verify your identity or account access.
- Confirm how many checks you can receive, whether any amount or use restrictions apply, and the fee before you request them.
- Write the payee and amount as you would on a personal check. Make sure your account has enough available funds when the check is presented.
The printed fields, number supplied, access requirements, restrictions, and processing can differ by institution. Ask your bank what to expect rather than assuming every counter check looks or works exactly the same.

Counter check vs. cashier’s check vs. regular check
| Payment type | Whose funds back it? | What it is suited for | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Counter check | Your checking account | A temporary paper-check need, such as while regular checks are on order | Whether your bank offers it, its fee and requirements, and whether the recipient accepts it |
| Cashier’s check | The issuing bank’s funds | A payment where the recipient requires a bank-issued check | Ask the bank about fees and requirements, and confirm that the recipient accepts it |
| Regular personalized check | Your checking account | Future or recurring paper-check use | Ordering options, delivery timing, and any applicable cost |
A cashier’s check is different: it is issued against the bank’s funds and signed by a bank representative. A counter check remains your personal check and does not acquire a bank guarantee because the bank supplied it. The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) warns that counterfeit cashier’s checks can take time to detect; apparent availability of funds is not, by itself, proof that a check is secure: I was passed a fraudulent cashier’s check. What should I do?
How to get one and what it may cost

- Where can you request the checks, and do you need to visit a branch?
- What identification or account verification is required?
- How many checks will the bank provide, and are there amount or use restrictions?
- What is the current fee?
- Will the intended recipient accept a temporary personal check?
As one bank-specific example, a Wells Fargo consumer account disclosure lists “Personalized temporary checks (counter checks)” at $3 per sheet of three checks. That is a Wells Fargo disclosure figure, not a standard price across banks. Check your bank’s current fee schedule and confirm that the listed terms apply to your account.
Will a recipient accept a counter check?
Acceptance is not universal. A counter check is a temporary personal check, but the available bank and regulator guidance does not establish that every payee must accept one. Ask the person or business you intend to pay before depending on it, especially if the payment has a deadline or the recipient requires guaranteed funds.

When to choose another option
For regular paper-check use
If you will need checks on an ongoing basis, order regular personalized checks through your bank. Chase also identifies third-party check printers as an option for consumers. Ordering regular checks is a longer-term solution, not a substitute for an immediate counter check.
When the recipient requires bank-backed funds
Ask whether the recipient accepts a cashier’s check or another payment method, then ask your bank about the relevant fees and requirements. A cashier’s check is not interchangeable with a counter check; the two use different funds and offer different assurances.

Safety and check-cashing limits
For a counter check, confirm that your account has enough available funds and that the recipient will accept it. Do not treat a temporary check as guaranteed payment.
The OCC says federal law and regulations do not require a bank to cash a check for someone who is not its customer, and a bank may charge a fee if it chooses to do so: Can a bank refuse to cash a check if I don’t have an account there? This concerns a noncustomer trying to cash a check; it is separate from an account holder asking their own bank for counter checks.
