Could You Buy Lobo, Texas, for $100,000? What the 2023 Ghost-Town Listing Actually Said

Lobo’s reported $100,000 price was a 2023 base offer, not a current listing. Here’s what the 10-acre West Texas property included and what buyers still need to verify.

In May 2023, three German co-owners were reported to be offering Lobo, a 10-acre ghost town in West Texas, with a base price of $100,000. That was a historical asking figure—not confirmation that Lobo is for sale today, that it sold, or that the price remains the same.

What did $100,000 buy in the reported offer?

Marfa Public Radio reported on May 8, 2023, that the owners had set a $100,000 base price for the 10-acre property. Reporter Travis Bubenik attributed the figure to co-owner Alexander Bardorff. The report did not establish a final sale price or a completed transaction. Read the Marfa Public Radio report.

The offering was described as including a former motel, grocery store and post office, gas station and restaurant, pool, homes, and other buildings. CBS Texas also described the restaurant, gas station and saloon as a combined site. Those descriptions identify structures on the property; they do not establish that any are operating, habitable, or in sound condition now. CBS Texas’s June 2023 report gives additional background.

Where is Lobo, Texas?

Lobo is in West Texas. CBS Texas placed it about 130 miles southeast of El Paso and 15 miles east of the Rio Grande. Those are the outlet’s reported distance descriptions, not a survey or guidance for visiting.

The town served as a railway watering stop for much of the 20th century and had been abandoned since 1991, according to CBS Texas. The report also described the Lobo Valley as sitting atop a large aquifer that supplies the town and nearby agricultural operations. That regional context does not establish the water rights, quality, capacity, or availability associated with a particular parcel.

Why were the owners selling—and would the highest bid win?

The three German friends bought Lobo in 2001. In the 2023 listing statement quoted by Marfa Public Radio, they said they were too old to keep maintaining the buildings and land and wanted a buyer who appreciated the town’s character. Bardorff said the highest offer would not necessarily determine the sale; he said the owners might accept a lower offer from someone whose plans seemed like a good fit.

At the time, the owners hoped to make a final decision by the end of June 2023. The report also said they had lived, worked, and vacationed there and held art and film events. These details describe the owners’ intentions and use of Lobo at that time, not what happened afterward.

Is Lobo still for sale?

The available 2023 reports do not say whether the property sold, identify its current owner, confirm an active listing, or establish whether visitors may enter. So the accurate answer is that its current sale and access status is unconfirmed—not that you can buy or visit it now. A prospective buyer would need current confirmation from the owners or a listing representative, plus authoritative property records.

What should a prospective buyer verify?

A historic cluster of buildings and a reported price do not establish the condition, legal boundaries, or practical costs of owning a remote property. Before evaluating a purchase, a buyer would want current answers to questions such as:

  • Ownership and title: Who owns the land now, and can the seller convey clear title?
  • Parcel boundaries: What land and structures are included in the transaction, according to current records and a survey?
  • Building condition: Which structures remain, and what do qualified inspections establish about their condition and safety?
  • Water and wastewater: What systems serve the property, what condition are they in, and what rights or approvals apply? The valley’s reported aquifer is not proof of parcel-specific access.
  • Access and permitted uses: What legal access exists, and which uses are allowed under applicable rules?

These are due-diligence questions, not claims that Lobo has a particular defect or that a specific requirement applies. The 2023 news reports do not answer them.
