Rocket Mortgage’s planned preference for VantageScore 4.0 on eligible loans could reduce some scoring costs and help some borrowers move forward, but there is not enough public information to call it a game changer for Rocket Companies (NYSE: RKT). Rocket has not disclosed how many loans will be affected, its total savings, or an expected earnings contribution. The rollout is a potential operational catalyst—not a quantified stock forecast.
What Rocket announced—and when it takes effect
On September 28, 2026, Rocket Mortgage said it would make VantageScore 4.0 its preferred scoring model in Q4 2026 for eligible mortgages delivered to Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, the VA, and other eligible channels. The announcement described the change as following about four months of testing. Because Q4 runs through December 31, the announcement describes a planned rollout during the quarter, not proof that every eligible loan had already switched as of the announcement date. Rocket said it obtained 1.4 million credit reports using both VantageScore and FICO during 2026. That is the number of reports it said it evaluated—not the number of loans that will use VantageScore, borrowers newly approved, or customers who will receive a lower rate.

Not across every product. Rocket described a preference for VantageScore on eligible loans, while identifying several products that would remain on FICO. The distinction matters: the change is a product- and channel-specific choice, not a company-wide end to FICO use.

How the policy change affects lenders and borrowers
The federal policy shift made the rollout possible. FHFA first allowed Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to use VantageScore 4.0 in a limited rollout. On September 9, 2026, it expanded access to all approved lenders, removing the earlier written-approval requirement. Lenders may choose a model loan by loan; Classic FICO remains an option, and FHFA has not announced a date to retire it. FICO 10T is not yet eligible for Enterprise loan delivery, according to FHFA’s current credit-score policy page.
Separately, on April 22, 2026, FHFA and HUD announced that Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and FHA were implementing new mortgage credit-score models. FHA said it would permit VantageScore 4.0 and FICO 10T for FHA-insured underwriting. That agency-level policy does not mean Rocket switched its FHA loans: Rocket’s announcement says those loans remain on FICO for now. FHFA and HUD’s April 22 announcement

VantageScore 4.0 can consider changes in credit behavior over time and may use rent and utility payment information when those details are included in a consumer’s file. FHFA also says the newer models can take additional information, including rent history, into account. Whether that changes a particular borrower’s result depends on the file and the model; neither agency policy nor Rocket’s announcement establishes that every score will rise or that a borrower will qualify. | Question | What the available policy information establishes |
|---|---|
| Which models can be used for eligible Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac loans? | Eligible lenders may choose VantageScore 4.0 or Classic FICO on a loan-by-loan basis. FICO 10T is not yet eligible for Enterprise delivery. FHFA |
| Does one score translate directly into the other? | No direct equivalence is established. A borrower’s results can differ by model, so a score under one model should not be treated as interchangeable with a score under the other. FHFA FAQ |
| Does a different model guarantee approval or better pricing? | No. Model eligibility does not guarantee approval or a particular mortgage rate; the borrower’s file and applicable underwriting rules still matter. FHFA FAQ |
What Rocket’s test results do—and do not—show
Rocket said its testing found that VantageScore helped more clients meet credit requirements and proceed in the mortgage process, while reducing credit-scoring costs. It also reported an average of $1,600 in closing savings among the clients who saved. Those are company-reported results: the announcement does not give the sample size, methodology, distribution of savings, or total savings across Rocket’s loan book. The $1,600 figure therefore is not a typical or guaranteed saving for every borrower, nor an estimate of market-wide savings. Rocket’s announcement

CEO Jay Bray framed the decision around competition, cost, and access, saying the company chose the model that “helped more qualified clients.” That is Rocket’s explanation for its decision, not an independent estimate of how many additional loans will close or how much profit the rollout will produce. Possible savings per eligible loan
If the model lowers scoring costs on loans Rocket actually originates, the savings could improve unit economics. The announcement does not disclose the per-loan savings or how much of the eligible business will use VantageScore, so investors cannot calculate the resulting expense reduction from the public figures.

More applicants progressing through the process
If the model better reflects some applicants’ credit histories, more may meet requirements or proceed further in underwriting. That could support additional originations, but the company has not quantified incremental approvals, closings, loan volume, or revenue attributable to the change.
Competitive positioning
Offering another model may help Rocket serve borrowers whose files are evaluated differently under VantageScore, while also giving brokers access to both models through Rocket Pro. The benefit depends on product eligibility, borrower mix, lender implementation, and whether the alternative model changes an outcome that matters to the loan.

Why the rollout is not yet a proven stock catalyst
To move from a plausible business benefit to a material RKT earnings or valuation thesis, investors would need to know the number of affected loans, ongoing scoring-cost savings, any change in conversion or origination volume, and the impact on revenue and expenses. Rocket’s rollout announcement provides none of those totals or a forecast contribution to earnings. Its favorable test description alone cannot establish materiality relative to the company’s mortgage business.
The rollout is also limited by product scope and lender choice. Some Rocket products remain on FICO; Rocket Pro offers both models; and FHFA continues to permit Classic FICO for eligible Enterprise loans without setting a retirement date. These factors make it premature to assume a rapid, universal industry transition or a predictable increase in Rocket’s margins. Rocket and FHFA
Before assigning an earnings or price target effect, compare any later company disclosures with Rocket’s current filings and guidance: loan origination volume, revenue, expenses, and management’s description of realized savings or borrower outcomes. The rollout is worth monitoring, but the announcement by itself does not support a dollar, EPS, or valuation estimate for RKT.
