Could Tariffs on U.S. Egg Imports Undercut Price Relief? What the 2025 Warning and 2026 Data Show

Tariffs could have weakened the price relief sought from egg imports, but the 2025 warning was not confirmation of an egg tariff or a measured price increase. Later USDA data show lower prices and fewer imports without establishing a tariff-driven cause.

They could make imported eggs and egg ingredients more expensive, potentially weakening the price relief imports were meant to provide. But the April 2025 warning described tariffs as a possibility—not a confirmed egg-specific charge—and the available reporting did not measure a tariff-driven increase in consumer prices. Later USDA data show lower egg prices and fewer imports in 2026, but do not establish that tariffs caused either change.

What the April 2025 tariff warning said

On April 4, 2025, Reuters reported that Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins said tariffs could apply to egg imports while the United States negotiated with countries supplying eggs. The imports were part of a response to a domestic shortage linked to avian influenza. Reuters said U.S. imports from Turkey, Brazil and South Korea had increased.

At the time, the baseline tariffs Reuters reported from White House figures were 10% for Turkey and Brazil and 26% for South Korea. Those are historical figures, not confirmation of current tariff treatment. The report established a possibility, not that a specific tariff on eggs was ultimately imposed.

The shortage response was substantial: Reuters reported that more than 1.6 million dozen consumer-grade chicken eggs were imported in January and February 2025, mostly from Turkey, compared with none a year earlier. Reuters attributed the figure to USDA data. It also reported that the avian-influenza outbreak had killed nearly 170 million chickens, turkeys and other birds since 2022; that is the total reported at the time, not a current count.

How tariffs could affect egg prices

A tariff is a charge on covered imports. If one applied to imported eggs or egg products, it could raise the cost of bringing them into the United States. Importers or food manufacturers might absorb some of that cost, pass some along to customers, or do both. Whether grocery shoppers would see a change—and how large it might be—would depend on contracts, company margins, competing supplies, substitution, demand and competition.

Greg Tyler, CEO of the USA Poultry & Egg Export Council, warned conditionally about processed-food inputs: “You will see increases in processed egg prices here in the United States as a result.” That was a forecast about a possible tariff, not evidence that prices rose by a measured amount. The Reuters report did not quantify how much of any tariff would reach consumers.

The distinction between products matters. Table eggs are shell eggs sold for consumption; breaking stock and other egg products are used in processing. A tariff affecting imported processing inputs could affect manufacturers’ costs without mapping directly to the price of a carton of shell eggs. USDA’s trade figures can combine eggs and egg products, so they should not be read as shell-egg imports alone.

Why imports do not guarantee quick or cheap relief

Tariffs are only one possible obstacle to supply. USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service sets out eligibility, certification, refrigeration, labeling and advance-application requirements for egg imports, with separate guidance for table eggs and breaking stock. Those rules and logistics are distinct from tariff costs.

In March 2025, the Associated Press described other constraints on sourcing eggs from Europe, including avian-influenza outbreaks and domestic Easter demand. It also reported differences between U.S. and European egg-safety systems. Hans-Peter Goldnick, president of the German Egg Association, said: “These are two systems that could not be more different.” Such differences can complicate supply even when buyers are willing to pay for imports.

What later prices and import data show

USDA Economic Research Service data published in 2026 provide a later snapshot, not proof of what tariffs did. In April 2026, imports of eggs and egg products totaled 1.2 million dozen-equivalent, 14.6 million dozen-equivalent below April 2025. In its June 2026 outlook, USDA lowered its full-year 2026 import projection to 14.6 million dozen-equivalent.

Measure Reported figure What it measures
Retail price, May 2026 $2.19 per dozen, down 52% year over year Average U.S. retail price reported by USDA ERS, citing the Bureau of Labor Statistics
Wholesale price, May 2026 67.85 cents per dozen, down about 81% year over year New York wholesale price for large eggs reported by USDA ERS using USDA Agricultural Marketing Service data

Retail and wholesale figures describe different points in the supply chain and should not be compared as if they were the same price. The declines do not show that tariffs lowered or raised prices; the cited USDA reporting does not identify tariffs as the cause of the price or import movements. USDA’s market outlook summary, updated September 18, 2026, also raised its forecasts for 2026 table-egg production and exports and lowered its projected third-quarter average egg price based on recent prices.

What this means for household budgets

The April 2025 concern was economically plausible: a charge on imported eggs or egg ingredients could raise costs somewhere in the supply chain and make imported supply less effective at easing a shortage. But the warning alone cannot tell shoppers whether a particular carton or processed food became more expensive because of tariffs. The 2026 price observations show that egg prices were lower than a year earlier, while USDA also projected fewer imports; they do not establish a causal link between those changes and tariff policy.
