Starbucks could acquire Chipotle, but the companies have not confirmed a deal. The Financial Times reported that Starbucks explored a possible takeover proposal; the reporting does not establish that Starbucks made a formal offer, that Chipotle accepted one, or that the companies agreed to a transaction.

What has been reported about a Starbucks–Chipotle deal?

On October 8, 2026, Reuters relayed a Financial Times report, citing people familiar with the matter, that Starbucks had explored a possible takeover of Chipotle. Reuters said neither company had immediately responded to its requests for comment at publication. The Financial Times report, carried by Yahoo Finance, said it could not determine the status of Starbucks’ plans or whether it had submitted a formal offer. Sources cautioned that a deal might never materialize, given the complexity of combining two large consumer companies.

As of CBS News’ October 9, 2026, update, a Starbucks spokesperson said, “As a matter of policy, we don’t comment on rumors and speculation.” CBS reported that Chipotle had not responded to its request for comment. Starbucks’ statement is not confirmation of a proposed deal.

Is Starbucks buying Chipotle, and what would the deal cost?

No confirmed transaction is established by the cited reporting. It does not establish a formal offer, an agreement, a purchase price, or a financing plan. The approximately $39 billion figure reported for Chipotle on October 8 is market-capitalization context—not a bid price, enterprise value, or confirmed value for a transaction.

Without disclosed terms, it is too early to assess what Starbucks might pay, how it could finance a purchase, or whether a deal would create value for either company’s shareholders. Any valuation or financing conclusion would be speculation.

Why is Brian Niccol part of the story?

Starbucks’ chairman and CEO, Brian Niccol, previously led Chipotle as CEO from 2018 to 2024. Starbucks says Niccol has held his current role since September 2024. That history makes a possible takeover a high-profile executive reunion, but it does not show that Niccol initiated or supports a deal, or that one is likely to happen.

What do the companies’ business priorities tell us?

Starbucks reported on July 29, 2026, that global comparable-store sales increased 7.9% while consolidated net revenues were $9.3 billion, down 1%. The company described continued work under its “Back to Starbucks” plan. Those figures and priorities offer operating context, but they do not establish Starbucks’ capacity or intent to finance an acquisition.

Starbucks announced that it planned to release its fourth-quarter and full-year 2026 results on October 29, 2026. Those results may add context on the company’s performance, but they would not by themselves confirm a transaction or its financing. A company statement, regulatory filing, or updated reporting would be needed to establish a deal’s status and any terms.

What should investors and readers watch for?

  • A formal company announcement or filing: This could clarify whether an offer exists, whether either company has agreed to terms, and what conditions apply.
  • Price and financing details: Until disclosed, the reported $39 billion market capitalization should not be treated as the value Starbucks would pay.
  • Evidence about strategic fit and execution: The cited reporting identifies the challenge of combining two large consumer companies, but does not establish shared operations, expected synergies, or a specific rationale.
  • Updated reporting: The available public statements and reports are dated October 8–9, 2026; a later development could change the picture.

For now, the accurate description is that Starbucks reportedly explored a possible Chipotle takeover. Whether it made an offer or will pursue a deal remains unconfirmed.
