Harry Whitwell and Cole Deeming could help West Bromwich Albion limit future recruitment needs if they develop into first-team players. But there is no evidence that either is set to replace a named senior signing or that the club will save a specific transfer fee. The case is a possibility, not a calculated saving.
How academy graduates could affect West Brom’s spending
A player who earns a regular first-team role from the academy can reduce the need to recruit another player for that position. That may avoid a transfer fee, although it does not make the player cost-free: development, wages and contract decisions still matter. In Whitwell’s and Deeming’s cases, the available facts show academy progress and senior exposure, but not established first-team roles.
Their contracts run through June 2027, giving West Brom time to assess their development. Both have also gone on loan, an indication that their playing pathways remain in progress rather than proof that either is ready to fill a specific senior-squad vacancy.

Whitwell: production at youth level, followed by a loan
Whitwell’s nine goals and five assists for West Brom’s PL2 side in 2024/25 are concrete youth-level production, while his Championship debut and earlier FA Cup breakthrough show senior exposure. They do not, by themselves, establish that he can take the place of a senior midfielder. The Forest Green loan documented by the club in August 2025 is part of his development route.

After his first senior start against Fleetwood, Whitwell pointed to the pathway offered by the club: “You’ve only got to look at Tom Fellows and Caleb Taylor to see there are opportunities here.” West Brom announcement.
Deeming: academy leadership and a later loan
Deeming’s record includes regular PL2 appearances, U18 captaincy and a senior debut. Academy Manager Richard Stevens described him as “a high performer in a really challenging group with lots of good footballers.” West Brom announcement.
The latest dated loan information available here is Hartlepool United’s 4 September 2026 announcement that Deeming joined on loan from West Brom until 2 January 2027. That move gives him a further opportunity for senior experience; it does not establish a future first-team role at West Brom.
What West Brom’s financial figures do—and do not—show
West Bromwich Albion Group Limited’s accounts for the year ended 30 June 2025 reported, in a subsequent-events note, £19.37 million in transfer and compensation income for the year ending June 2026, net of applicable levies and sell-on clauses. The same note reported £10 million in player-acquisition costs for that year. These are club-wide figures about transfers expected to be accounted for in the year ending June 2026—not savings attributable to Whitwell or Deeming. Companies House filing history.

The EFL’s financial-regulation guidance says compensation relating to academy-player transfers may be included in the Championship Squad Cost Rules calculation. That makes academy compensation relevant to the regulatory framework, but it does not put a value on retaining either player or show that doing so would avoid a particular purchase. A specific saving would require evidence connecting a player’s first-team contribution to a recruitment decision—for example, that West Brom needed a player for a particular role, used an academy graduate in that role instead, and consequently avoided a transfer fee. No such avoided signing or player-specific calculation is established for Whitwell or Deeming.

For now, the sound conclusion is narrower: both prospects have progressed through the academy, signed contracts through June 2027 and had senior exposure, while loans show that their development continues. If either becomes a dependable first-team option, that could reduce a future recruitment requirement. The scale and timing of any financial benefit remain unknown.
