For the September 15, 2026 settlement date, reported short interest was 5.74% of CLOV shares outstanding and 9.55% of GME shares outstanding. Those periodic figures describe reported positions at a past settlement date; they are not live readings or a squeeze forecast.
How CLOV short interest compares with GME
The latest same-date figures available here are FINRA data reproduced by ChartExchange. Both percentages use shares outstanding as the denominator, rather than shares available to trade, or “float.”
| Measure | GME | CLOV |
|---|---|---|
| Reported shares short, September 15, 2026 settlement | 39,069,126 | 23,446,183 |
| Short interest as a percentage of shares outstanding, same settlement date | 9.55% | 5.74% |
| Days to cover, same settlement date | 4.29 | 5.18 |
Source for all table figures: FINRA data reproduced by ChartExchange. The settlement date is September 15, 2026; the figures are not a live October 8 market reading.
On this measure, GME had the higher reported short-interest percentage and the larger count of shares short. CLOV had the higher days-to-cover figure. These metrics describe different things, so they do not combine into a single ranking of which stock is more likely to squeeze.

What changed in the preceding report
The prior comparison date in the cited data is August 31, 2026. Between that settlement and September 15, the reported GME count fell from 56,990,026 to 39,069,126 shares, while the CLOV count moved from 23,677,399 to 23,446,183. The corresponding reported days to cover changed from 9.72 to 4.29 for GME and from 6.87 to 5.18 for CLOV.
The data show different movements in the two reported series; they do not explain why the figures changed. In particular, the GME source also reports a large change in its share-count measure between the settlements, and the figures alone do not establish a cause. A share count should not be interpreted in isolation from its denominator, reporting date, and any relevant corporate actions.

What short interest and days to cover tell you
Reported short interest
Short interest is the reported number of shares sold short and not yet closed, measured at a specified settlement date. It is reported periodically, not continuously. The cited data pages identify FINRA as their source and describe a twice-monthly reporting cadence, so a report cannot show whether positions changed after its settlement date.
A percentage is meaningful only with its denominator attached. The figures above are percentages of shares outstanding. Some services calculate short interest against float instead; those percentages are not directly interchangeable. A high reported percentage is evidence of reported short positioning, not proof that a squeeze is imminent or that a particular price move will follow.

Days to cover
Days to cover is calculated by dividing reported short shares by average daily trading volume. It gives a volume-based comparison, not a timetable for covering: trading volume can change, and not all average volume is necessarily available to close short positions without affecting price. A higher reading can result from lower trading volume even if short positions have not risen proportionately.
Other figures are not substitutes
- Daily short-sale volume counts short-sale transactions during a day; it is not the same as the outstanding short position.
- Options open interest is a count of outstanding options contracts, not a direct measure of shares sold short.
- Fails to deliver do not by themselves prove naked short selling. The SEC staff report explains that fails can arise from short or long sales and says staff did not observe persistent fails at the individual clearing-member level.
None of these measures, taken alone, reveals the identity or conviction of short sellers, proves hidden positions, or establishes the direction of a stock’s next move.

What the SEC said about the 2021 GameStop episode
The SEC Division of Trading and Markets’ 2021 Staff Report on Equity and Options Market Structure Conditions in Early 2021 describes the rapid increase in GME’s price, trading volume, media attention, and online discussion. Among the examples it recounts, GME moved from $43 to $72 in roughly three hours on January 22, 2021. That is a historical episode, not evidence that another stock will follow the same path.
The report offers a more qualified account than the shorthand that short covering alone caused the run-up. Staff observed purchases that may have partly covered short positions, but those buys were a small fraction of overall buy volume. Prices also remained high after the direct effects of covering would have waned, and staff could not determine the underlying motivation for the purchases. Its report states that a short squeeze did not appear to be the main driver of events; it also discusses short-sale constraints and borrow costs as possible contributors to the rise and subsequent decline.

The SEC’s findings do not rule out short covering as one part of the episode. They do caution against treating a high short-interest figure, isolated fails to deliver, or online attention as a complete explanation—or as a reliable template for predicting a future price move.
What this comparison can—and cannot—say about CLOV
The figures establish that reported short interest as a share of outstanding shares was lower for CLOV than for GME on September 15, 2026, while CLOV’s reported days to cover was higher. They do not establish that CLOV is undervalued, that short sellers will need to buy shares quickly, or that a new squeeze is developing.
A fuller comparison would also require current, dated information about each company’s financial condition and business developments, alongside market data such as price and volume, options positioning, and securities-borrow costs. The official Clover Health investor-relations site lists second-quarter 2026 results and a Form 10-Q, and its filings index lists a Form 10-Q filed August 7, 2026. The March 2026 10-Q covers an earlier quarter and should not be presented as a current October balance sheet. The SEC record identified for GameStop accession 0001326380-26-000042 is an 8-K, not an annual report. The cited short-interest comparison does not itself supply a complete current fundamentals review for either issuer.
For a claim about a “next GME,” the distinction matters: reported short interest is one part of a market comparison, while a company’s prospects, near-term catalysts, and trading conditions are separate questions. The available figures answer the first only for their stated settlement dates.
