A December 2025 report says Birmingham City had been approached about a potential Birmingham rugby team using the club’s proposed new stadium. That claim remains unconfirmed: the official project and club material reviewed supports the stadium vision but does not announce a rugby tenant or a groundshare.
What is the reported twist?
The Football Forge reported on 19 December 2025 that Birmingham City had been approached by Premiership Rugby about a potential Birmingham team using the proposed new stadium. The post names no team, source, date for the alleged approach, or terms. It is an attributed report, not confirmation from Birmingham City or Premiership Rugby. The Football Forge report
That distinction matters: an approach, if made, is not the same as a club considering a proposal, agreeing a lease, or announcing a confirmed tenant.
What is confirmed about the stadium plan?
Birmingham City Council’s development summary describes the Sports Quarter proposal as including a 60,000-seat Blues stadium, a women’s stadium, a 15,000–20,000-seat arena, training facilities and mixed-use development. These are proposed components, not facilities confirmed as built or open. Birmingham City Council’s Sports Quarter summary

In a July 2026 update, Birmingham City FC described development of the Sports Quarter and future Powerhouse Stadium as part of the club’s long-term vision. The update does not mention a rugby tenant or groundshare. Birmingham City FC’s Knighthead update
Has a rugby groundshare been agreed?
No agreement is established by the material reviewed. The only claim of an approach comes from The Football Forge; the official council and club updates cited above do not validate it. There is no named rugby club, published lease, match schedule or operational arrangement to assess.

Why St Andrew’s has come up in the conversation
Birmingham City previously hosted Coventry City home matches at St Andrew’s during the 2019–20 season. The Guardian reported that Coventry had failed to reach a deal to remain at the Ricoh Arena and that the EFL reluctantly approved the Birmingham groundshare so Coventry could fulfil its fixtures. The Guardian’s 2019 report
That was a temporary football arrangement arising from a tenancy dispute. It is historical context, not evidence that a rugby team will share the proposed new stadium.

What would need confirming next?
If a rugby partner is identified, the practical questions would include who owns, leases and operates the stadium; how football and rugby fixtures would be scheduled; whether the pitch needs conversion; how capacity and access would work on matchdays; and whether football remains the stadium’s primary use. None of those terms is established in the report.
