That finding does not prove Guyana could withstand every consequence of a worldwide trade shutdown: the study compared production with recommended dietary needs, rather than testing a literal end to food trade and other imports.
What the study found
In a study published online on 16 May 2025 in Nature Food, Jonas Stehl and colleagues compared national food production with the WWF Livewell diet, a dietary-guidance benchmark. Using Food and Agriculture Organization Food Balance Sheet data for 2020, they assessed how domestic food availability compared with recommended intake in seven groups: fruits, vegetables, dairy, fish, meat, plant-based protein and starchy staples. The main comparison covered 186 countries; the paper’s figure caption reports coverage of 187 countries for most groups and 186 for dairy. Read the study in Nature Food.
Guyana was the only country assessed that met the benchmark in all seven groups. China and Vietnam met it in six. The study also found that 154 countries met the benchmark in two to five groups, while more than one-third met it in no more than two. One in seven met it in at least five groups, mostly in Europe and South America. Meat was a relative strength: 65% of countries met or exceeded the benchmark for that group. What “self-sufficient” means here
The study’s measure is a comparison: does a country’s domestic production-based food availability reach the recommended intake for each of the seven groups? A result at or above 100% means the benchmark is met for that group. Guyana met that threshold across all seven.

That is narrower than saying a country produces everything its residents eat or can operate independently. The analysis does not establish that Guyana could supply every ingredient and agricultural input, or keep food processing, storage, transport and retail running without trade. Nor does it show whether domestic supply could reach people equitably during a crisis. It is a food-group production comparison against dietary guidance, not a comprehensive stress test of food-system resilience.
Why the result does not mean trade should stop
A country’s ability to meet a production benchmark is not evidence that ending trade would improve food security. The authors place the findings in the context of food-system resilience, including the risks of relying heavily on a small number of import partners. Their policy emphasis is on resilient supply chains, diversified trade and cooperation—not autarky.

As the authors put it, “Building resilient food supply chains is imperative for ensuring public health.” The result for Guyana is notable, but the study’s broader message is that many countries fall short of recommended supply in at least some food groups, and resilience cannot be reduced to a single self-sufficiency score.
