Boeing announced in March 2026 that the FAA had certified a higher maximum takeoff weight for the 787-10. Boeing says the change can give airlines roughly 5 metric tons of additional payload or more than 400 nautical miles of additional range, depending on how they use it. That could make the 787-10 more flexible, but it does not prove that a hypothetical “ER” version would match every A350 variant or be cheaper to operate.
Is there a Boeing 787-10ER?
Boeing’s published 787 lineup lists the 787-8, 787-9 and 787-10, but not a 787-10ER. The “ER” in the question is therefore hypothetical, not the name of a currently listed aircraft. Boeing’s March 23, 2026 announcement concerns a higher maximum takeoff weight capability for the 787-10—not a separately named ER model.
Boeing says the FAA-certified increase is about 14,000 pounds. Depending on an airline’s use, it can allow roughly 5 metric tons of additional payload or more than 400 nautical miles of extra range. These are alternative ways to use the increased capability, not a promise that an aircraft can carry both the maximum added payload and the maximum added range on every flight. Boeing describes the change as providing greater flexibility for airline operations. Boeing’s announcement attributes this comment to 787 chief project engineer John Murphy: “We started this effort after airlines sent Boeing a clear message: They wanted greater flexibility.”
How do the published specifications compare?
The figures below come from the manufacturers, which present the A350-900’s range and seating differently on its family and aircraft pages. They are not an independent, same-configuration comparison.
#1 Best Overall
- Realistic airplane model: Officially licensed by Boeing 787 with authentic, highly detailed markings and designs accurate to the real plane
- Toy airplane for kids: This must-have for the young aviator in your life includes a single toy plane with rolling wheels and authentic livery
- Size: Plane model measures approximately 5.75 inches in length with a 5- inch wingspan, perfectly sized for easy display and handling
- Quality materials: Die-cast metal airplanes with plastic parts, no assembly required
- Let your imagination fly: Daron airplanes have brought smiles to kids and collectors since 1990 as America’s source of aviation-related collectibles and transportation themed toys
| Aircraft and source | Published range | Published passenger capacity | Published maximum takeoff weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| Boeing 787-10 | Up to 7,500 nmi | 300–375 seats in a two-class configuration | 260,360 kg |
| Airbus A350-900, family page | Up to 8,600 nmi | 300–350 passengers | Not stated on the cited family page |
| Airbus A350-900, aircraft page | Up to 9,700 nmi | 332–352 passengers in a standard three-class configuration | Not stated on the cited aircraft page |
| Airbus A350-1000, family page | 9,100 nmi, stated as a 2030 target | 350–410 passengers | Not stated on the cited family page |
The A350-900’s 8,600-nmi family-page figure and 9,700-nmi aircraft-page figure are both published Airbus values, but the pages present them differently. They should not be blended into one specification or treated as a like-for-like test against Boeing’s range figure. Airbus describes the A350-1000’s 9,100 nmi as a 2030 target, not as a current in-service range claim.
Would the higher-weight 787-10 close the range gap?
It could narrow the practical gap for some missions. Boeing’s stated “more than 400 nmi” is an increase enabled by the added takeoff weight capability; it is not a new, guaranteed maximum-range specification for every 787-10 configuration. The published baseline figure remains up to 7,500 nmi on Boeing’s product page.

Range depends on the aircraft’s payload and operating conditions. An airline considering a long route has to assess how much passenger, baggage and cargo weight it can carry while meeting that route’s requirements. The manufacturer figures alone do not establish how much payload either aircraft could carry on a particular city pair, or whether the 787-10’s added capability would match a specific A350 configuration.
Which aircraft would make more sense for an airline?
The answer depends on the route and the airline’s network, not on range or seat capacity alone. A higher-capacity aircraft may suit a route with enough demand to fill it; a smaller aircraft may be preferable when demand, frequency or network connections favor carrying fewer passengers per flight. Both choices also depend on the required payload and route length.

- High-quality 1:200-scale plastic model
- Simple snap-fit design
- Authentic markings
- The model measures 7"H x 12"L x 15.25"W
- Recommended age is 14 and up
The cited manufacturer specifications do not provide route-specific fuel burn, operating costs or comparative economics for matching payloads and routes. They therefore cannot establish which aircraft would be cheaper to operate or deliver better returns. An airline would need to compare the aircraft it could actually acquire and configure against its own route, demand and operating assumptions.

Boeing’s higher-weight certification gives airlines more flexibility with the 787-10, including the potential for more payload or additional range. It does not establish a new 787-10ER, a particular ER design’s performance, or that it would equal the range of either A350-900 presentation or the A350-1000’s stated 2030 target. The defensible comparison is between published aircraft specifications and the certified 787-10 capability—not a claim that an unannounced model has already challenged the A350.
