For the electronics and appliance categories Costco names, the return window is 90 days from the date you receive the merchandise. The category, receipt date, purchase channel and, for phones, carrier contract all matter.
How Costco’s electronics return policy works
Costco describes its general merchandise promise as a “Risk-Free 100% Satisfaction Guarantee,” but its policy lists exceptions. The electronics rule is a 90-day return period, not an unlimited anytime return. Costco’s policy page, version 18.0 published October 2, 2025, says the period begins on the date the member receives the merchandise: Costco’s return policy.
The stated deadline is tied to receipt, not simply the date you placed or paid for the order. If you are close to the deadline, use the delivery or receipt date and check the order-specific return instructions.

The appliance wording is not identical across Costco’s pages. Its separate major-appliance policy lists refrigerators over 10 cubic feet, water heaters, washers, dryers, dishwashers, freezers, ranges, cooktops and over-the-range microwaves. For a particular appliance, rely on the product or order page and the policy applicable to that item rather than assuming every appliance is included: Costco’s major-appliance policy.
Where to start a return
Costco gives different routes for warehouse and online purchases. Its online product details page also has Shipping and Returns information, which can provide instructions specific to an order.

Phone returns may depend on the carrier contract
Costco cautions that cellular-phone return details vary by carrier service contract. Do not assume the same conditions apply to every phone: check the applicable contract and the return instructions for your order before relying on a particular outcome.

An appliance warranty is not a longer return window
Costco says its listed major appliances receive an extension of the manufacturer’s warranty to two years, with warranty assistance through Costco Technical & Warranty Services. Coverage specifics depend on the manufacturer, and Costco says the second-year coverage mirrors the manufacturer’s warranty. Costco may meet its second-year obligation through repair, replacement or a refund up to the purchase price. This warranty coverage is separate from the 90-day return period; it does not make the return deadline two years. See Costco’s major-appliance policy for the stated warranty terms.

Costco’s general policy names additional exceptions, including cigarettes and alcohol where returns are prohibited by law; custom products made to unique specifications, subject to a stated warranty repair or replacement exception; airline and live-performance event items; precious metals; Shop Cards; and gift card and ticket items. These exclusions are another reason to check the current policy and item-specific terms rather than treating the general guarantee as universal.
