Corteva’s Carbon-Efficiency Plans: What It Announced and What Its Targets Mean

Corteva’s 2021 announcement outlined operational plans and emissions-intensity targets. Its current 2030 Scope 1 and 2 statement also includes an absolute reduction target.

Corteva announced operational plans to reduce emissions in 2021, including lower energy use, production efficiencies and a shift toward renewable energy. The targets require an important distinction: the company’s current 2030 target pairs a 42% absolute reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions with a separate 65% intensity reduction target. An intensity target measures emissions in relation to business activity; it does not mean the same amount of emissions will be eliminated outright.

What Corteva announced in 2021

On June 2, 2021, Successful Farming reported that Corteva had committed to set science-based greenhouse-gas reduction targets for 2030. The announcement described targets and intended actions, not completed emissions cuts.

The reported operational measures included reducing energy use, pursuing research and development, improving production efficiency and shifting to renewable energy sources. Corteva CEO Jim Collins said, “We recognize that climate change affects us all. We are taking action that is right for our business and farmers,” as quoted in the June 2, 2021 Successful Farming article.

What the emissions targets measure

The 2021 report described targets for two categories of emissions. Scope 1 and 2 generally cover emissions from a company’s own operations and purchased energy; Scope 3 covers other emissions across its value chain. The targets reported at the time were expressed as reductions in emissions intensity, not as absolute reductions.

Target as reported in 2021 Measure What it means
65% reduction by 2030 Scope 1 and 2 emissions intensity Emissions relative to business activity, indexed to projected revenue and company growth; not an equivalent 65% cut in total emissions. Successful Farming, June 2, 2021.
20% reduction by 2030 Scope 3 emissions intensity An intensity target for value-chain emissions. The 2021 report does not establish current progress against it. Successful Farming, June 2, 2021.

How Corteva’s current Scope 1 and 2 targets differ

Corteva’s current sustainability page, accessed October 8, 2026, states a 42% absolute Scope 1 and 2 reduction target by 2030, alongside a 65% intensity reduction target based on 2030 sales projections. These are distinct measures: absolute reduction tracks the total emissions, while intensity relates emissions to business activity. The intensity target does not substitute for, or add up to, the absolute target.

The current page gives a current Scope 1 and 2 target statement; it does not, in the reviewed material, establish a verified achievement figure. Nor do the reviewed sources establish current progress against the specific 2021 Scope 3 intensity target.

Plans, validation and results are not interchangeable

The 2021 article said Corteva planned to seek validation of its targets by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). That statement describes an intended next step; it does not confirm that SBTi later validated those specific targets. SBTi develops standards, tools and guidance for corporate emissions-reduction targets aligned with climate science. Its role is distinct from reporting a company’s actual emissions performance.

The announcement also appeared alongside Corteva’s inaugural 2020 Sustainability Report and broader sustainability commitments. The targets and plans described in the 2021 coverage were company-reported material; they should not be read as independent verification of every claim or as proof that planned changes had already reduced emissions.

What a reader can conclude

  • Corteva announced operational measures in 2021 intended to improve carbon efficiency, including lower energy use, production efficiency and renewable energy.
  • The 2021 figures—65% Scope 1 and 2 intensity reduction and 20% Scope 3 intensity reduction by 2030—are not equivalent to absolute emissions cuts.
  • Corteva’s current page states a 42% absolute Scope 1 and 2 target alongside a 65% intensity target based on 2030 sales projections.
  • The reviewed sources do not establish verified achieved reductions or current progress on the 2021 Scope 3 target, and they do not confirm SBTi validation of the specific 2021 targets.
