Corteva Agriscience announced Brevant on May 13, 2020, as a new U.S. seed brand for the 2021 planting season. It was aimed at farmers who buy seed through local retailers, with the initial retail focus in the Midwest and Eastern Corn Belt. Corteva said Brevant would replace Mycogen as its primary U.S. retail-focused brand for that season—not that it would replace Mycogen everywhere or define Brevant’s current availability.
What was Brevant seed?
Brevant was a Corteva Agriscience seed brand introduced for growers who preferred to purchase seed and receive service through local agricultural retailers. Corteva described the brand as a way to offer its genetics, traits, technology, and agronomic support through that retail channel. In the launch announcement, Jason Dodd, Brevant’s general manager, said: “Access to Corteva Agriscience’s genetics and deep germplasm pool through Brevant will be a great new advantage to retail customers.”
Mike Lozier, Brevant’s marketing leader, described the intended customer this way: “We are introducing the Brevant brand for farmers who prefer the service and local expertise that retail brings to their farm.” These were company statements explaining the brand’s positioning, not independent assessments of its products or service.
Where was Brevant sold, and what did it replace?
Corteva’s May 12, 2020 route-to-market announcement said Brevant would be sold exclusively through retail in the Midwest and Eastern Corn Belt. In the same strategy, the company positioned Pioneer as its corn and soybean brand for the Southern, Southwestern, and Western U.S. markets. Corteva said Brevant would replace Mycogen as its primary U.S. retail-focused brand for the 2021 sales season. These were plans announced for that season; they do not establish present-day distribution or inventory. See Corteva’s route-to-market announcement.

Which crops did the 2021 launch cover?
The announcement presented Brevant as a corn and soybean brand and said more than 200 corn hybrids and soybean varieties were expected to be available to order that summer for 2021 planting. It also identified BMR silage corn, including Unified corn silage and TMF hybrids, along with canola and sunflower seed. These are offerings described in the 2020 launch announcement, not a current catalog. The announcement is available from Corteva.

What did Corteva report about yield comparisons?
Corteva published comparison figures to support the initial Brevant lineup. Each figure applies to a defined set of products and trials; none is a guarantee of results on an individual farm or in a later season.
| Products and comparison scope | Corteva-reported result | Evidence described in the announcement |
|---|---|---|
| Brevant corn hybrids offered for 2021 planting, compared within two days of relative maturity | Average advantage of 7 bu/A | More than 379,000 comparisons. Corteva described the evidence as multi-year, on-farm pre-commercial head-to-head comparisons and third-party trials. |
| Brevant Enlist E3 soybean varieties offered for 2021 planting, compared within three days of relative maturity | Average advantage of 1 bu/A | 695 on-farm comparisons in 2019. |
| Broader Brevant comparison evidence cited in the announcement | More than 2,800,000 head-to-head comparisons between 2017 and 2019 | Corteva described these as multi-year, on-farm pre-commercial comparisons and third-party and on-farm trials. |
All three figures are Corteva’s 2020 company-reported figures. The announcement’s footnotes identify the comparison sets but do not establish independent validation of Corteva’s interpretation. The results should not be generalized to later Brevant lineups, other geographies, or comparisons outside the stated maturity windows. Read the announcement and its trial footnotes for the company’s stated context.

How should a grower compare seed options?
The launch figures are not a farm-specific recommendation. For a useful comparison, evaluate products suited to the same crop and local conditions, rather than treating a brand-level average as a universal ranking.
- Compare relative maturity and products adapted to the same planting area and season.
- Match trait packages to the farm’s relevant weed and pest pressures.
- Review multi-year and multi-location trial evidence, including how comparisons were designed and which products were included.
- Consider the availability of local agronomic service and the retailer’s familiarity with the area.
A local agricultural retailer can help identify suitable products and confirm what is available for a particular season. Corteva’s launch announcement itself directed growers toward retail but did not make farm-level recommendations.
