Cornell’s Faculty Senate planned to vote on a no-confidence resolution concerning administrators’ handling of allegations tied to an alleged 2024 sexual assault at a fraternity house, according to the Associated Press on October 6, 2026. The reporting reviewed does not establish that the Senate completed the vote or adopted the resolution.
What is the Cornell faculty no-confidence resolution about?
The proposal concerns the university’s response to allegations arising from an alleged sexual assault at Cornell’s Chi Phi fraternity house in 2024. The Associated Press reported that a woman identified in court documents as Jane Doe reported the alleged assault to Cornell police in November 2024, and later filed a civil lawsuit. Cornell also conducted a separate Title IX investigation, according to AP.
These are allegations, not findings of criminal guilt. AP reported that no criminal charges had been filed as of October 6, 2026. A civil lawsuit and a university Title IX process are distinct from a criminal prosecution.

What review has Cornell announced?
Cornell trustees announced an independent review led by former U.S. Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates. AP reported that the review would examine how the university investigates reports of sexual assault and harassment, its disciplinary processes, campus police responses, and oversight of fraternities, sororities, and other campus groups.
Trustee chair Anne Meinig Smalling said: “It is imperative that Cornell be willing to examine itself with the same rigor we expect of others.”

How is this different from the Student Assembly resolutions?
The Faculty Senate proposal is separate from actions by Cornell’s Student Assembly. The Cornell Daily Sun reported that the Student Assembly unanimously passed three resolutions on October 1 related to the allegations and sexual violence. The paper described recommendations involving institutional transparency and accountability, access to consent and substance-use training materials, and survivor counseling access.
Cornell’s Office of the Assemblies explains that resolutions advocate for the opinion or will of a constituency and may be approved or dismissed by an Assembly vote. Its official page describes the general resolution process but does not document the Faculty Senate proposal.
