March corn futures fell 1½ cents on Friday, December 13, 2024, to close at $4.42 per bushel. Yet the contract finished 2 cents above its close from the previous week. Those figures describe different time periods: Friday’s daily loss did not erase the March contract’s modest weekly gain.
How could March corn fall for the day but rise for the week?
The daily change compares the Friday, December 13, 2024, settlement with the prior session. The weekly change compares that settlement with the March contract’s close a week earlier. Successful Farming reported that March corn settled at $4.42 per bushel, down 1½ cents on Friday but up 2 cents week over week. It also closed 9¼ cents below the week’s high. Successful Farming’s December 13, 2024 report gives the dated figures.
Where did the close sit relative to the support levels?
Before trading began on December 13, 2024, Naomi Blohm, senior market advisor at Total Farm Marketing, identified $4.40, $4.35, and $4.30 per bushel as support levels for March corn. She described $4.30 as major support near the bottom of the uptrend line and the 100-day moving average. The historical $4.42 close was above all three levels.
Blohm’s levels were commentary about the market setup at that time, not guaranteed price floors. They are historical reference points and should not be treated as current technical levels.

What did the report say about the seasonal rally?
Blohm said the decade-average “Christmas rally” for March corn futures was 33 cents and that the 2024 rally had almost reached 26 cents. She also observed that in four of the previous ten years, the rally stopped in conjunction with the December WASDE report, which USDA released on December 10, 2024. These are Blohm’s attributed historical comparisons as quoted in the report, not an independently verified time series or a forecast for what followed.
What else was reported that Friday?
The article’s 9:27 a.m. Central Time update said March corn was down less than a penny at that point in the session. It also reported USDA’s announcement of a 200,000-metric-ton soybean purchase by unknown destinations for the 2024/2025 marketing year. That announcement concerned soybeans, not corn.
