On Wednesday, August 14, 2024, December corn closed 3½ cents higher and November soybeans gained 6 cents. September wheat futures finished mixed, with Chicago wheat higher and Kansas City and Minneapolis wheat lower. Successful Farming reported the following daily contract changes in Cassidy Walter’s report, published and updated August 14, 2024. The figures show the change for each named contract, not its settlement price.

What the report said was behind the gains
Corn
Successful Farming attributed its corn-market context to Grain Market Insider, a newsletter from Stewart-Peterson Inc. The newsletter said: “Monday’s bullish reversal remains supportive to corn prices as the market consolidates with limited upside movement due to continued non-threatening weather and farmer selling.” In that commentary, the earlier reversal offered support, while weather and farmer selling were described as limiting further gains. This is the newsletter’s market interpretation, not independently established causation.

Soybeans
Grain Market Insider characterized the soybean move as a technical recovery after prices reached new lows: “the soybean market posted a technical recovery from extremely oversold conditions as traders likely covered short positions from the recent break in prices.” The word “likely” matters: the statement is the newsletter’s explanation of the move, not a verified measure of trader positioning.
