Copy trading can automate the placement of trades based on another person’s positions or signals, but it cannot make investing reliably profitable or risk-free. Your results may differ from the person you copy, and you remain responsible for choosing a service, understanding what it trades and monitoring your account. Treat it as an automated investment service with risks to investigate—not as hands-free income.
What copy trading does—and what it does not do
In a typical copy-trading setup, you choose a signal provider or investor and authorise a platform to translate that person’s trades into orders in your account. The platform may size positions proportionally to your allocated balance, subject to minimums and other account rules. You may be able to disconnect the relationship, but the available controls and the consequences of using them depend on the platform.
The label is not a complete description of the service. “Social trading” can refer to seeing or discussing other investors’ activity without automatically copying it; a self-directed feature may let you choose trades yourself. Mirror trading and discretionary portfolio management can describe other arrangements. What matters is how the service actually operates, who makes each decision, and which legal entity provides it—not just the product name.
Copying does not transfer the other person’s judgment, expertise or outcome to you. It also does not remove your responsibility to understand the portfolio, the service’s costs and the risks you can afford.

Can copy trading make a beginner’s investing profitable and hands-free?
Profit is possible, but it is not assured. The FCA, ESMA and eToro materials discussed below do not establish a beginner success rate or show that copy trading outperforms investing without copying. A return shown for a copied trader is not a promise about your future result—or a reliable forecast of what your own account will earn.
“Hands-free” is also an incomplete description. Order placement may be automated, but choosing whom to copy, deciding how much to allocate, checking what the strategy holds and responding to a change in your circumstances still require attention. Automation can make trades happen without a fresh decision from you; it cannot make the underlying risks disappear.

What can make your result different from the copied trader’s?
Your account may not reproduce another person’s record exactly. A platform can use proportional sizing, but minimum position sizes, unavailable instruments and account settings may prevent a trade or change its size. Your balance, deposits or withdrawals, market conditions and execution can also affect the result.
For example, eToro’s risk disclosure describes proportional position sizing subject to minimums and says that positions may change or close automatically when the copied trader changes or closes theirs. It also warns that copied results can diverge because of balance changes, deposits and withdrawals, settings, market behaviour and the copied user’s performance. Those are eToro-specific disclosures, not terms that can be assumed to apply identically to every service.

- Pocket Size Receipt Book, 8.5 x 14.3 cm: Each book is 3 11/32 x 5 5/8 inches with a 3 11/32 x 5 1/8 inch detached form, small enough to carry in a pocket. This pack holds 10 books of 50 sets, 500 receipts in total.
- Office Supplies for Retail and Service Calls: Use it as a bill book for billing invoices, a guest check or a sales slip at a register, vendor booth or job site. Stamp your company name in the blank top area.
Past returns and platform risk scores do not guarantee future outcomes. A stop control or stop order may not execute at the price you request. eToro’s disclosure says a copier may lose more than the amount originally used to copy a trader; treat that as a warning about the terms and execution risk on that service, not as a universal statement about every platform.
What should you check before choosing a trader or service?
Do not select someone on headline returns alone. Compare the service and the strategy across the practical questions below, and read the current account terms before committing money.

| Check | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Legal entity and permission | Which legal entity will serve your account? Which regulator authorises it, and does its permission cover the activity being offered in your location? |
| Assets and exposure | What can the strategy trade? Could it use CFDs, leverage, cryptoassets or leveraged or inverse ETFs? Are those products and features available to you in your jurisdiction? |
| Costs and incentives | What are the complete charges and trading costs? How is the copied trader or signal provider paid, and could the incentive encourage trading that is not in your interest? |
| Track record and risk | How long is the record, and under what conditions was it built? Examine drawdowns, concentration and consistency of strategy rather than relying on a short stretch of returns or a platform risk score. |
| Execution and control | What is the minimum copy amount? How are undersized or unavailable positions handled? How do you pause or stop copying, and what happens to open trades when you do? |
These questions are more useful than looking for a universally “best” trader. No particular person can be recommended on the evidence available here, and a strategy suitable for one investor may be unsuitable for another.
How is copy trading treated by regulators?
United Kingdom: FCA guidance
The Financial Conduct Authority’s firm-facing guidance, updated 27 July 2026, says that copy trading is commonly offered through CFD platforms. It describes a service that turns third-party signals into buy or sell orders. Where there is no clear manual input from the account holder, the FCA classifies the activity as portfolio or investment management. In the UK/MiFID context it describes, a service involving MiFID financial instruments may require portfolio-management authorisation and bring suitability, conduct and periodic reporting duties.

That classification depends on the arrangement and applicable law; a feature called “copy trading” does not automatically have identical treatment in every case. Check the firm and the permission for the specific service you plan to use.
European Union: ESMA supervisory expectations
On 30 March 2023, the European Securities and Markets Authority announced a supervisory briefing for firms offering copy trading. It highlights information for clients—including marketing, costs and charges—alongside product governance, suitability and appropriateness, remuneration and inducements, and the qualifications of copied traders. The EU regulatory lens therefore covers both how a service is presented and how the people being copied are assessed.
United States: an eToro feature example
eToro’s guide labelled August 2026 describes CopyTrader as placing a selected user’s future trades in the customer’s account. The guide says, “CopyTrader is not an investment advice tool,” that eToro does not recommend specific users and that the customer directs the selection. These statements describe eToro’s US-facing guide, not copy-trading services generally.
That US guide says stocks and ETFs are purchased through eToro USA Securities Inc., identified as a registered broker-dealer and FINRA/SIPC member; digital assets use eToro USA LLC or eToro NY LLC as applicable, and digital assets are not protected by SIPC. It also notes that some stocks and ETFs may be unavailable to copy because of fractional-share support or liquidity and trading considerations. The same guide warns that copied portfolios may include leveraged or inverse ETFs, which it describes as typically higher risk. Check the current guide and terms for your account rather than applying these details to another country or provider.

How to verify a service and watch for scams
- Identify the provider. Confirm the exact legal entity named in the account terms, not just the platform brand.
- Check the regulator’s register. In the UK, use the FCA Firm Checker to verify authorisation and whether the firm is permitted to offer the service. In the EU, check the relevant investment-firm register and confirm details with your domestic regulator. Permission and entity should match the service and location you are considering.
- Inspect the offer and the website address. The FCA warns that investment scams can use social media, false celebrity endorsements, professional-looking websites and initially displayed returns, followed by pressure to invest more or recruit others. ESMA also warns about lookalike URLs and deepfakes. A firm’s absence from an alert list does not prove that it is legitimate.
- Walk away from urgency or guarantees. Be wary of unsolicited contact, pressure to act quickly and claims of guaranteed or implausible profits. Those claims are not made safe by an attractive performance chart.
- Read the service terms before funding. Confirm costs, instruments, how copying works, and the practical steps for pausing, disconnecting and managing open positions.
Regulatory details are jurisdiction-specific: FCA guidance here concerns the UK, ESMA’s briefing concerns the EU framework, and the eToro example is US-facing. Verify which legal entity and permissions apply to your own account and location, and re-check current feature availability, costs and terms before relying on a platform description.
