The coolest summer camp for a teen is the one that matches their interests, preferred level of independence, and your family’s budget—not a universal “best” camp. Start by choosing between day, overnight, traditional, and specialty programs, then compare the exact session, safety practices, total cost, and logistics with the provider.
Start with the kind of experience your teen wants
Ask your teen what they want to do, how much structure they prefer, and whether they are ready to spend nights away from home. A traditional camp offers a mix of activities; a specialty camp focuses more closely on a particular interest or skill. Neither format is automatically better. The right choice depends on whether your teen wants variety, focused instruction, or a chance to try something new.
Outdoor and adventure camps
Activities may include hiking, canoeing, sailing, horseback riding, and ropes courses. Offerings can vary by camp and session, so check the specific schedule. Ask who supervises each activity, what qualifications they have, and what safety practices apply.
Arts and creative programs
Arts programs may focus on a particular discipline or combine creative activities with a broader camp schedule. Confirm which disciplines are offered in the session, the eligible ages, and whether the program is primarily instructional, recreational, or both.

Choose a format and level of independence
Day camps and overnight camps differ in daily schedule and living arrangements. Overnight programs may give teens more time away from home and more opportunities to manage routines independently; a day program may be a better fit if your teen wants camp activities without staying overnight. Session length, accommodation style, and the amount of choice in the daily schedule also shape the experience.
Use the American Camp Association’s camp-selection guidance to consider location, group size, setting, session duration, schedule structure, budget, communication arrangements, and physical or dietary needs. Involve your teen in reviewing options rather than choosing solely from a list of activities.

Compare programs on the details that affect fit and cost
Once you have a few candidates, compare the same session details across them. A camp’s headline tuition may not capture the full cost, and two programs with similar activities can differ in schedule, support, and what is included.

The American Camp Association says costs vary with the program, facilities, and camper needs, and notes that financial assistance may be available. Because prices and inclusions depend on the provider and session, request a current itemized total rather than relying on general averages.

Ask specific safety questions
Accreditation can be one useful screening point, but it does not replace questions about the particular camp, session, and activities your teen will attend. The American Camp Association describes its accreditation as peer review of camp operations, including staff qualifications and training and emergency management; some activities have separate standards. The American Academy of Pediatrics’ camp-selection guidance also prompts families to ask about staff composition and accreditation.
- Is the camp currently accredited, and what operations does that accreditation cover?
- What training do staff receive, including training relevant to the activities your teen will do?
- How are campers supervised, and what supervision arrangements apply to the teen’s age group and activities?
- What is the emergency plan, and how are medical needs handled?
- Are there additional safety procedures or qualifications for activities such as water sports, horseback riding, or ropes courses?
Confirm current dates, tuition, and requirements before enrolling
Program offerings, availability, and costs can change. Contact each provider about the exact session you are considering and confirm age eligibility, total tuition, included meals and transportation, additional activity or travel fees, payment deadlines, cancellation terms, and financial aid. Ask about communication rules and accommodations before committing, too.
