PerthNow reported on 2 May 2024 that the Cook Government had allocated $10 million in the 2024–25 Western Australian State Budget to make trial extensions of Perth’s Red and Blue CAT bus services permanent. The report said the funding would come from the Perth Parking Levy. This is a summary of a 2024 budget announcement, not confirmation of current routes or timetables.
What the $10 million allocation was for
According to PerthNow’s 2 May 2024 report, the allocation was intended to continue the expanded Red and Blue CAT operations after changes announced in late 2021. The report described more than 20 additional CBD bus stops as part of those changes.
PerthNow said the allocation came from the Perth Parking Levy. The budget papers and the levy’s underlying allocation are not independently established here, so the funding amount and source should be understood as reported by PerthNow rather than verified against primary budget documents.

How to interpret the patronage figures
Saffioti attributed the reported increases to the period between October 2021 and October 2023. PerthNow did not link to the underlying patronage dataset or provide a method for calculating the figures. They show reported changes in use over that period, but they do not by themselves prove that the route extensions caused the increases.
What the announcement means in context
PerthNow framed the CAT commitment as part of broader Cook Government investment in the CBD, alongside ECU City Campus, the Causeway Cycling and Pedestrian Bridges, and the WACA Ground redevelopment. Those projects provide context for the announcement; the report does not say the CAT allocation funded them.

The announcement is therefore best read as a reported 2024–25 budget commitment to retain expanded Red and Blue CAT operations, rather than as a current service notice. The report’s figures and details are attributable to PerthNow and the minister quoted in it, not to independently reviewed budget papers, timetable information, or patronage data.
