The uncertainty did not last: the next day, CEO Dan Lewis told employees Convoy was closing its core business operations. Flexport later acquired Convoy’s technology—not the company or its liabilities—and recorded a sale of the Convoy Platform to DAT Freight & Analytics on July 28, 2025.
What happened to Convoy?
On October 18, 2023, reports said Convoy had paused shipments and was canceling loads through its digital freight marketplace. Convoy told GeekWire it was preparing for a transition and would provide more details later that week. A Convoy spokesperson separately told Axios: “Today, we are taking several necessary steps to prepare Convoy’s business for a transition that we will have more details on in the next 48 hours.”
By October 19, the situation had become clearer. CEO and co-founder Dan Lewis told employees that Convoy would close its core business operations. FreightWaves quoted his letter: “With that action nearing completion, Convoy will be closing down its current core business operations.” The cancellation reports were therefore the first public sign of a transition that quickly became a shutdown of the company’s brokerage operations.

Why were Convoy shipments canceled?
The cancellations occurred as Convoy was preparing for a transition, but the contemporaneous reports do not establish a single cause for the shutdown. GeekWire described a freight-market slowdown, multiple rounds of layoffs, and the company’s reported exploration of strategic options as context. Axios reported that efforts to find an acquirer or raise additional funding had been unsuccessful, citing sources familiar with the situation.

Those factors help explain the business circumstances surrounding the closure, but they should not be treated as proof that any one factor alone caused it. The available reporting supports a sequence—market pressure and unsuccessful efforts to secure a path forward, followed by shipment cancellations and the closure announcement—rather than a definitive account of a sole cause.
Did Flexport or DAT buy Convoy?
No. The transactions described by the companies concerned Convoy’s technology or platform, not the acquisition of Convoy, Inc. Flexport CEO Ryan Petersen wrote on November 1, 2023, “We are not acquiring Convoy the company or any of its liabilities.” Flexport said it had acquired Convoy’s technology stack and planned to restore full-truckload service.

Flexport’s update later records that it announced the sale of the Convoy Platform to DAT Freight & Analytics on July 28, 2025. That is a platform transaction; it does not mean DAT bought the defunct company or assumed its liabilities. The cited update establishes the announced sale, but it does not by itself verify which services are currently operating or the platform’s present availability.

Convoy was described by GeekWire as one of Seattle’s most well-funded privately held startups. GeekWire reported in 2023 that Convoy had reached a $3.8 billion valuation after a $260 million financing round in 2022. These are historical figures reported in connection with the company’s 2022 financing, not a current valuation or a measure of what its platform later sold for.
