Consumer Reports’ latest accessible reporting on car insurance is based on a 2024 survey of 40,566 U.S. policyholders and covers 36 providers. It does not, however, expose the complete company-by-company ratings table, so a reliable current worst-to-best ranking cannot be reproduced here. Treat the findings as a broad satisfaction signal—not a personalized recommendation—and compare current quotes and policy terms for your state and needs.

Why there is no verified current worst-to-best list

Consumer Reports reported the survey size and number of providers in its September 2, 2025 coverage, but its full ratings are available to digital members and the company-by-company table is not present in the accessible reporting. The current order and scores therefore cannot be confirmed. Publishing a ranked list without that table would risk assigning insurers positions or scores that are not established.

A previous Consumer Reports explanation from March 2023 named USAA, NJM, Amica, and Erie in its highest rating category at that time. That is historical information, not the current top four, and it does not provide a current full ranking. See Consumer Reports’ 2023 explanation and its ratings page.

What Consumer Reports’ ratings measure

Consumer Reports’ 2023 explanation described seven parts of its evaluation. The latest accessible coverage does not establish the current weighting, so these dimensions should be understood as context for the ratings rather than a verified description of how much each counts today.

This wider scope matters: an overall customer rating is not simply a measure of how quickly or generously an insurer settles claims. For a separate claims-focused perspective, J.D. Power’s 2025 U.S. Auto Claims Satisfaction Study surveyed 9,455 customers who had settled an auto claim in the prior nine months. It assessed trust, settlement fairness, people, time to settle, communication, ease of resolving and starting a claim, and digital channels. It is a different study and should not be treated as a substitute for Consumer Reports’ overall ratings: J.D. Power’s 2025 study.

How to interpret the survey findings

Consumer Reports’ 2025 coverage says the 2024 survey included 40,566 American policyholders and rated 36 providers. That is a substantial customer survey, but it is still survey evidence—not a quote, underwriting decision, or promise about an individual’s future experience. Consumer Reports has also cautioned that its members may not represent the entire U.S. population.

The same coverage reported a median annual premium just under $1,500 among respondents. That figure describes the survey population; it is not a typical price guarantee or a useful estimate for every driver, state, vehicle, or level of coverage. See Consumer Reports’ September 2025 reporting.

Among respondents who had changed insurers in the preceding five years, 58 percent cited a lower rate as a reason and 41 percent cited their existing provider raising rates. Those reasons could overlap, and neither percentage predicts how much a particular household could save. The Consumer Reports article quotes survey research unit director Martin Lachter: “Comparison shopping every year or two is the best way to ensure you are getting the best value.” That is general advice, not a guarantee that switching will reduce a given driver’s bill. How to choose an insurer for your own situation

Use satisfaction ratings to decide which insurers merit a closer look, then make the decision using current offers and policy details available to you. A high rank does not establish that a company operates in your state, will insure your particular risk, offers the coverages you need, or will provide the lowest price.

  1. Confirm availability and eligibility. Check whether each insurer offers policies in your state and will quote your driver, vehicle, and household circumstances. Consumer Reports’ car insurance buying guide provides broader selection guidance.
  2. Request comparable quotes. Use the same drivers, vehicles, liability limits, deductibles, and optional coverages for each quote. Otherwise, a lower premium may simply reflect less protection.
  3. Review policy terms, not just the total. Compare coverage limits, exclusions, deductibles, and any options that matter to you. Consider service and claims experience alongside price.
  4. Recheck at renewal. Premiums and eligibility can change. Compare the renewal offer with current alternatives before deciding whether to stay or switch.
