Connex Credit Union reported a data breach affecting 172,000 people, including 467 Maine residents, according to a 2025 filing with the Maine Office of the Attorney General. Files may have been accessed or downloaded without authorization during June 2–3, 2025. Connex said it had no reason to believe the incident involved unauthorized access to members’ accounts or funds.

What happened in the Connex Credit Union breach?

The Maine Office of the Attorney General’s 2025 filing lists 172,000 people affected. That is the reported total, not a count limited to Maine; the filing separately identifies 467 Maine residents. These are figures reported in the filing, not independently audited totals. Maine Office of the Attorney General filing

The filing records June 2, 2025 as the breach date, July 27 as the discovery date, and August 7 as the consumer-notification date. Connex’s reported account of the event says it experienced unusual activity on June 3 and that files may have been accessed or downloaded without authorization between June 2 and June 3. The July 27 date is the filing’s recorded discovery date; it should not be read as the date Connex first detected the activity. BleepingComputer’s report

What information may have been exposed?

Reports list names, account numbers, debit-card information, Social Security numbers, and government identification used to open accounts as potentially involved. This does not establish that every person’s record contained every listed data type. BleepingComputer and Banking Dive report the information categories.

Were Connex member accounts or funds accessed?

Connex reportedly said it had no reason to believe the incident involved unauthorized access to member accounts or funds. That is the credit union’s stated assessment; it is not a guarantee that no individual experienced harm. Banking Dive

What free credit monitoring did Connex offer?

The Maine filing lists CyberScout services including single-bureau credit monitoring, a credit report, and a credit score. Its duration field says “12/24 Months,” while Banking Dive describes a year of complimentary credit and identity protection through CyberScout. Because those descriptions differ, check your own notice for the service, term, eligibility, enrollment deadline, and instructions that apply to you. The available reports do not establish individualized terms for every recipient. Maine filing; Banking Dive

Banking Dive also reports that Connex set up a toll-free call center and notified the National Credit Union Administration and federal law enforcement. The sources available from August 2025 do not establish final forensic findings or later legal outcomes. Banking Dive

How can I spot a Connex impersonation scam?

Connex warned that scammers may call or text members while pretending to be credit union employees. BleepingComputer quoted Connex’s alert: “Connex will never call you and ask for PINs, passcodes, or account numbers.” This warning is specific to Connex’s stated practice, not a universal rule for every financial institution. Was my Connex Credit Union account affected?

The reported total covers people whose information may have been involved; it does not establish that every person was a Connex member or that every member was affected. Check any notice you received from Connex to determine whether you are included and what information and protection terms apply to you. If you are unsure, contact the credit union through contact information you obtain independently from its official site or member materials.
