Connecticut reported $1.85 billion in unclaimed property associated with 11.9 million rightful owners as of June 30, 2026. That is a dated statewide total—not money available to residents generally. To see whether any of it belongs to you, search the state’s free official database at CTBigList.gov and follow the instructions for any match.

What Connecticut’s $1.85 billion figure means

The Connecticut Office of the State Treasurer reported $1.85 billion in escheated property for 11.9 million rightful owners as of June 30, 2026. The balance changes as property comes in, securities are sold, and claims are paid; it should not be read as a live total or a share owed to each state resident. A search result must still be supported with evidence that you own the property or are entitled to claim it.

During fiscal year 2026, the Treasurer reported receiving $293.5 million: $200.1 million voluntarily reported by financial institutions and other businesses, $75.7 million from securities sales, and $17.7 million from examinations of company records. The state also reported returning $102.4 million to 69,459 rightful owners during that fiscal year. These are FY2026 figures, not current-day totals. Connecticut Treasurer’s FY2026 year-in-review

Is the governor on Connecticut’s list?

The statewide balance does not establish that Governor Ned Lamont—or any other specific person—is listed. The official sources cited here do not confirm that personal claim. Connecticut’s database is searchable by owner name, so verify a claim through the official portal rather than treating the headline assertion as fact.

How to search and claim property

  1. Go to CTBigList.gov, the Connecticut Treasurer’s official unclaimed-property portal.
  2. Search your name and review any results carefully. The statutory list can include an apparent owner’s name and last-known address when available, along with a property description and holder details. A similar name alone does not prove ownership.
  3. Open a matching result and follow the portal’s claim instructions. Submit the evidence requested to establish your right to the property. The portal also provides separate functions for uploading documents to an existing claim and checking claim status.
  4. If you need help searching, call the Treasurer’s unclaimed-property number, 1-800-833-7318, weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern. The state also points to MissingMoney.com as a multi-state lookup option; use the Connecticut portal as the direct route for a Connecticut claim.

Connecticut General Statutes § 3-70a requires a certified claim stating the facts that support entitlement. The law says the Treasurer must consider a claim no later than 90 days after filing; that is a consideration deadline, not a promise that every claim will be paid within 90 days. Connecticut General Statutes, Chapter 32 (2026 supplement)

What kinds of property may be listed?

Common examples include bank accounts, uncashed checks, refunds, liquidated securities, and insurance proceeds. Banks, credit unions, insurers, brokerage firms, utility companies, and other businesses may report property after losing contact with a customer. Connecticut says businesses generally transfer assets after three to five years without contact; the exact dormancy period can depend on the property type and applicable rules. Do you have to pay to claim it?

No. The Treasurer’s portal states, “Property is returned at no cost with proper evidence.” Owners and heirs can claim directly; you do not need to hire a finder. The Department of Consumer Protection says rightful owners and heirs retain the right to claim and that there is no time limit. Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection: Unclaimed Property

If you consider using a finder, know that Connecticut law imposes requirements on agreements entered into on or after January 1, 2025. A written, signed agreement must clearly and conspicuously disclose the property’s nature and value, your share after fees, and your right to file directly with the Treasurer at no cost. Solicitation must also disclose the free direct-claim option. Compare any proposed fee with the state’s no-cost route before signing. Connecticut General Statutes, Chapter 32 (2026 supplement)

Is CTBigList.gov legitimate?

Yes. CTBigList.gov is the official search portal linked by the Connecticut Office of the State Treasurer. Start from the Treasurer’s Unclaimed Property page if you want to confirm the portal address. Avoid paying for a search that the state provides for free, and be cautious of anyone who asks for sensitive information or a fee before you have verified a claim through the official process.
