The team’s current biography still lists her as an owner in 2026, but official materials reviewed do not disclose her individual ownership percentage or financial contribution.
When did Condoleezza Rice become a Broncos owner?
Rob Walton announced Rice’s addition to the Walton-Penner Family Ownership Group on July 11, 2022, while the group’s acquisition of the Broncos was still awaiting NFL approval. The team had announced a purchase-and-sale agreement with the Walton-Penner family on June 7, subject to league approval and closing procedures; Rice was not named in that initial announcement. The Broncos’ July announcement described her as joining the ownership group.
NFL owners unanimously approved the sale on August 9, 2022, completing the league approval process. The league reported that the group’s winning bid was $4.65 billion. That figure was the purchase price for the franchise, not Rice’s investment or the value of her individual stake. The NFL’s approval report also says at least 24 of the league’s 32 owners were required to approve the transaction.
How much of the Broncos does Rice own?
The official announcements and biography reviewed establish Rice’s membership in the ownership group, but do not state her percentage, individual purchase contribution, or specific financial terms. “Minority owner” is commonly used to distinguish a non-controlling ownership position, but the available official materials do not quantify Rice’s stake or specify her decision-making authority. It would be inaccurate to calculate her share from the group’s $4.65 billion purchase price.

Why did Rice join the ownership group?
Rice has described the role as a way to bring together her longstanding interest in football and her personal connection to Denver. Her father coached football, and she served on the inaugural College Football Playoff Committee after being selected in 2013. The NFL says she served on the committee through the end of the 2016 season.
Rice moved to Denver with her family at age 12 and attended the University of Denver for college and graduate school. At the Broncos’ ownership-group introduction on August 10, 2022, she recalled her father’s influence: “You have to understand how much I love football. My dad was a football coach when I was born. I was supposed to be his All-American linebacker. When he got a girl, he decided to teach her about the sport instead.”

In her July 2022 statement, Rice said she was glad to combine her love of football with her affection for Denver and the team. Walton’s announcement likewise cited her public service, academic and corporate leadership, football knowledge, and Denver ties. These statements explain the public rationale for her addition; they do not establish the size of her stake.
