BTCPay Server is the clearest fit for merchants who want self-custody and can run their own payment infrastructure. BitPay suits established businesses that prioritize managed processing and fiat settlement; NOWPayments offers broad asset coverage; CoinGate is a balanced international option; Strike is best considered when Lightning and USD settlement are central; and Coinbase Business may suit businesses in its listed markets that already use Coinbase. There is no universal winner: custody, settlement, platform, jurisdiction, and total cost matter more than a provider’s headline fee or token count. Pricing and availability below reflect information published as of August 18, 2026, and can change.
What a Bitcoin payment gateway does
A gateway creates a payment request, monitors for the expected transaction, reports its status to the store, and may convert or settle funds to the merchant. Depending on the product, it can also provide hosted checkout, plugins, APIs, invoices, payment links, refunds, and reporting. These functions are not the same as tax services, a merchant-of-record arrangement, or a guarantee that a bank payout will be immediate.

Bitcoin on-chain and Lightning are different payment rails
On-chain Bitcoin payments are recorded on Bitcoin’s blockchain. Confirmation time and network fees vary, so the store needs clear rules for invoice expiry, late payments, underpayments, overpayments, and when an order is safe to fulfill. Lightning is designed for fast, smaller payments, but requires Lightning-compatible wallets and infrastructure. A provider may abstract away channel and liquidity management; a successful payment can still depend on liquidity, routing, node uptime, and invoice expiry.
Bitcoin acceptance does not dictate settlement
A customer can pay in BTC while the merchant receives fiat, crypto, or a mixture, depending on the provider and account. Fiat conversion reduces the merchant’s exposure to BTC price movements, but makes settlement dependent on the processor, its compliance review, and banking relationships. Keeping crypto instead means the merchant takes responsibility for custody, volatility, accounting, and tax treatment. Stablecoin checkout may be useful for some customers, but it is not Bitcoin acceptance and should be assessed separately.

Compare the gateways by operating model
The figures and feature descriptions in this table are provider-published signals, not a guarantee of eligibility or final account terms. Confirm the particular asset, network, integration, settlement currency, and fees for your business and country before launch.
| Gateway | Type and custody | Bitcoin and other assets | Published pricing signal | Settlement and integrations | Best fit and key limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| BTCPay Server | Self-hosted, open-source processor; funds can go directly to the connected wallet. | Bitcoin and Lightning; not a broad multi-coin processor. | Software advertises 0% platform fees. Hosting, infrastructure, network fees, and operations are separate. | APIs and connectors include WooCommerce, Shopify, BigCommerce, OpenCart, Wix, Drupal, Magento, PrestaShop, WHMCS, and Zapier. | Best for technically capable merchants who value control and self-custody. The merchant owns hosting, security, backups, upgrades, and incident response. |
| BitPay | Managed processor with fiat or crypto settlement options. | Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, Ethereum, Dogecoin, Litecoin, XRP, USDC, and other listed assets. | Published acceptance pricing is 2% + $0.25 below $500,000 monthly volume; 1.5% + $0.25 from $500,000 to $999,999; and 1% + $0.25 at $1 million or more. Higher-risk industries may pay more. | Advertises daily settlement in local currency, crypto, or a combination; business tools and QuickBooks IIF downloads are listed. | Best for businesses seeking a traditional processor relationship and fiat settlement. Published percentage fees may weigh heavily at lower volumes. |
| NOWPayments | Managed, broad multi-asset processor. | Advertises 350+ currencies; check availability and network for each asset. | Advertises a 0.5% service fee, while separately referencing processing, network, and on-ramp fees; it is not an all-in cost guarantee. | APIs, invoices, buttons, subscriptions, plugins, widgets, and fiat-related products are advertised. | Best for businesses needing wide asset coverage and multiple checkout formats. Breadth can add reconciliation, compliance, wallet, and support complexity. |
| CoinGate | Managed, general-purpose crypto processor. | 10+ cryptocurrencies on its Standard plan. | Standard plan lists 1% per transaction and no monthly fee; Enterprise rates are custom. | Advertises plugins, APIs, payment channels, email invoicing, and full or partial refunds from the merchant account balance. | Best for mainstream international e-commerce seeking a conventional processor. Verify settlement and exchange details for the account. |
| Strike | Bitcoin/Lightning-focused business platform. | Bitcoin and Lightning focus; not intended as a broad altcoin catalog. | No comparable universal merchant transaction rate is stated on the reviewed business page; request written account pricing. | USD settlement is available in supported integrations; check the current integration path for the specific store and jurisdiction. | Best when Lightning and USD settlement are central. Availability, integration depth, and pricing depend on the business and market. |
| Coinbase Business | Business account spanning payments and other Coinbase functions; confirm how custody and settlement work for the selected product. | Check current checkout asset and network support for the business account. | No simple universal merchant checkout rate is stated on the reviewed page; confirm transaction, conversion, payout, and API pricing. | Advertises payments, checkouts, payment links, APIs, trading, custody, reporting, and accounting functions. | Potential fit for businesses in the United States and Singapore already using Coinbase. Do not rely on older Coinbase Commerce descriptions for current terms. |

How to choose by settlement and custody
Choose self-custody when control outweighs convenience
BTCPay Server is the strongest match when a merchant wants funds routed directly to its wallet and can operate the surrounding systems. The software is free, but that does not make deployment costless. Depending on setup, the merchant may pay for a VPS or other hosting, Bitcoin node or Lightning infrastructure, wallet and hardware security, monitoring, backups, upgrades, developer time, and incident response. Blockchain or Lightning network fees may also apply. Documentation is available at BTCPay Server’s documentation.

It is a poor fit if the company needs turnkey fiat bank payouts or lacks someone accountable for wallet and server maintenance.
Choose managed processing when fiat payouts and support matter
BitPay is the clearest conventional processor choice in this group for a business prioritizing daily fiat settlement and established business tools. Its published rates are volume-tiered and include a fixed transaction component; higher-risk industries may face higher fees. Confirm which local currencies, payout schedules, bank requirements, and exceptions apply to the merchant’s account at BitPay’s pricing page.

CoinGate offers a more moderate published Standard-plan rate and broad e-commerce features, while NOWPayments emphasizes asset breadth and a lower published service-fee figure. Neither headline price alone establishes the total cost. For either provider, verify the conversion route, network, withdrawal, and payout terms for the exact asset and jurisdiction.
Choose a specialist when the payment rail or existing account is decisive
Strike deserves consideration where Lightning payments and USD settlement are the central requirements. Its business onboarding asks for business information, tax or banking documents, relevant licenses where applicable, and identity documents for owners and operators. Those requirements are described at Strike Business.

Calculate the full cost, not just the gateway rate
Compare providers using the same transaction size, asset, settlement currency, volume, and refund scenario. A useful cost model is:
Total payment cost = gateway fee + fixed transaction fee + network fee + exchange-rate spread + fiat conversion fee + withdrawal or payout fee + currency-conversion fee + e-commerce platform fee + applicable third-party transaction fee + hosting and infrastructure + refund and reconciliation costs.

- BitPay: its published tiers include both a percentage and $0.25 per transaction; do not compare only the percentage.
- NOWPayments: the advertised 0.5% is a service-fee figure, not a guaranteed all-in merchant cost; the provider separately refers to processing, network, and on-ramp fees.
- CoinGate: its Standard plan lists 1% per transaction, with standard currency exchange; confirm the account’s actual settlement and exchange treatment.
- BTCPay Server: no platform fee does not eliminate hosting, network, security, maintenance, or staff costs.
- Shopify: third-party gateway fees may apply in addition to provider charges. Check Shopify’s current terms for the merchant’s plan and country.
For a fair comparison, estimate costs at your actual expected monthly volume and average order value. Include the cost of a failed payout or manual refund process, not only successful checkout.

Shopify
To see providers available to a particular store, open Settings → Payments → Additional payment methods → Add payment methods, then search for “cryptocurrency.” Shopify’s documentation currently lists providers including BitPay, OpenNode, Strike, Crypto.com, DePay, Lunu, Bit2Me Commerce, and IBEX Pay; it also lists Solana Pay. Availability inside the admin is more relevant than a generic provider list because country and account eligibility can differ. Shopify warns about third-party gateway fees, delays that can contribute to overselling, and the need to handle crypto refunds manually. See Shopify’s cryptocurrency payment guidance.
WooCommerce and other hosted or open-source stores
BTCPay lists connectors for WooCommerce and a range of other platforms, while CoinGate advertises plugins and APIs. Before choosing, verify that the current plugin supports the store’s platform version, checkout flow, refund handling, and order-status webhooks. A listed integration does not by itself establish that it supports every feature or market you need.
Custom checkout, SaaS, and invoicing
For a custom store or SaaS product, compare API documentation, webhook signing and retry behavior, idempotency, invoice expiry controls, subscription support, and the provider’s way of reporting settlement status. NOWPayments advertises APIs, invoices, subscriptions, and widgets; CoinGate advertises APIs and email invoicing; BTCPay offers APIs and custom integrations. Test the integration in the actual order flow before relying on it for fulfillment.
Marketplaces and digital-goods sellers should pay particular attention to who controls the receiving wallet, how refunds are authorized, and whether an order can be fulfilled before the payment is sufficiently confirmed. A gateway is not automatically a merchant-of-record service and does not, by itself, resolve sales tax, VAT/GST, consumer-protection, product-liability, export-control, or local licensing duties.

Handle refunds, exceptions, and order fulfillment deliberately
Crypto refunds need an explicit process
Crypto payments generally do not behave like card refunds. The business may need the customer’s refund address, may need to send the refund manually, and must account for partial refunds and exchange-rate movement. If BTC was converted to fiat, a refund may require the provider to repurchase crypto or the merchant to send it separately; the customer’s returned crypto value may not equal the original fiat value unless the provider explicitly guarantees that outcome.
Shopify says cryptocurrency refunds are not automatic through Shopify and must be handled manually through the gateway. CoinGate advertises full and partial refunds in multiple cryptocurrencies from the merchant account balance. Confirm which asset and network can be refunded, who pays the network fee, and how wrong-network or late payments are handled before accepting orders.
Separate payment status from fulfillment status
An invoice being created, a payment being detected, an invoice being partially paid, a provider accepting a payment, an on-chain confirmation, and funds being settled to the merchant are distinct events. Configure the store’s order-status automation around the event that matches its risk tolerance. Releasing high-value goods solely because a transaction appears in a wallet’s unconfirmed transaction pool exposes the merchant to avoidable risk. A lower confirmation threshold for low-value digital goods is a business decision, not proof that every payment is final.
For USD-priced goods paid in BTC, make sure the invoice locks an exchange rate for a defined period and defines what happens to late payments: honor, reprice, or refund. Set separate rules for underpayments, overpayments, duplicate notifications, expired invoices, and payments made on an unsupported network. Shopify specifically warns that crypto settlement delays can cause overselling during fast-moving sales.
Irreversibility does not eliminate operational risk
On-chain payments generally lack conventional card chargebacks, but that does not mean every crypto order is safe or dispute-free. Businesses still face fraudulent orders, stolen funds, sanctions exposure, wrong-network transfers, account takeover, social-engineering refund scams, delivery disputes, and price or settlement risk. A written refund and escalation policy is part of payment acceptance, not an optional afterthought.

Check geography, onboarding, and reporting before signup
Do not equate global customer reach with global merchant availability. Check separately whether the provider accepts the merchant’s country of registration, the customer’s country, the required bank-payout country and currency, and the specific asset and network. Ask whether account approval requires beneficial-owner identity checks, tax or incorporation records, banking details, or industry licenses, and whether compliance review can delay or restrict settlement.
Requirements vary by provider, product, merchant, and jurisdiction; a payment processor is not a blanket compliance solution. Coinbase Business says it uses transaction monitoring and sanctions screening and lists availability in the United States and Singapore. Strike’s business page describes document and identity verification for business onboarding. BitPay notes that higher fees may apply to high-risk industries, and other providers may impose restrictions or decline categories. Confirm terms directly before building a checkout around an assumption of eligibility.
For accounting, ask whether reports distinguish gross payment, gateway fees, conversion, refunds, and net payout; record exchange rates at the relevant invoice, payment, and settlement points; and establish how retained crypto will be tracked. BitPay advertises payment reporting and QuickBooks IIF downloads. Coinbase Business advertises reporting and accounting functions. A gateway report does not necessarily provide complete tax-lot records or satisfy local sales-tax, VAT, or GST invoicing rules.

Use a launch checklist before accepting real payments
- Confirm merchant-country eligibility, supported payout currency, KYC requirements, and any industry restrictions.
- Verify the exact Bitcoin method (on-chain, Lightning, or both), supported assets and networks, conversion route, and settlement destination.
- Calculate expected total cost at your volume, including fixed fees, spreads, network, payout, platform, and infrastructure charges.
- Test a successful on-chain BTC payment and, if offered, a successful Lightning payment.
- Test an expired invoice, underpayment, overpayment, wrong-network attempt, duplicate webhook, and delayed confirmation.
- Test full and partial refunds, including the customer-address collection process and the asset/network used for return.
- Verify order statuses and fulfillment timing, especially for limited inventory or digital goods.
- Test fiat payout, failed payout handling, reconciliation exports, and escalation to provider support.
- Document who owns wallet keys, backups, server upgrades, incident response, and refund approval.
Recommendations by merchant profile
- Technical, privacy-focused Bitcoin merchant: start with BTCPay Server if the business can maintain the infrastructure and accepts direct responsibility for wallets and operations.
- Established business needing fiat settlement and support: evaluate BitPay, then compare its published fee tier and final account terms against margins and order size.
- Store accepting many different crypto assets: consider NOWPayments, but enable only assets and networks the business can reconcile and support.
- International e-commerce merchant wanting a conventional processor: compare CoinGate’s Standard plan and integrations with the exact markets and settlement terms required.
- Business centered on Lightning payments and USD settlement: investigate Strike’s business eligibility and integration options in the merchant’s jurisdiction.
- US or Singapore business already using Coinbase: assess Coinbase Business, confirming current checkout availability and written pricing rather than relying on older Coinbase Commerce coverage.
Score finalists against the business’s own priorities rather than treating a ranking as universal. A practical starting weight is settlement and fiat availability (20%), integration quality (15%), total cost (15%), custody and counterparty risk (15%), Bitcoin and Lightning support (10%), refunds and exceptions (10%), geographic and compliance fit (10%), and reporting and support (5%). Change those weights if the business has a distinctive priority: a self-custody merchant may give custody substantially more weight, while a conventional retailer may prioritize fiat payout and onboarding.
